There's this mini-thread from twitter that I think gives a pretty good reasoning for the success this trailer is having:

Points at this tired MC who had childhood dreams of being a Pokémon trainer and had to grow up and leave that dream behind to make it in the real world. They know us.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. It's Pokemon's Cyber Sleuth moment.

Man, "together, they fight crime" really is a fail-proof premise, huh.

I'm not 100% into the "Realistic" designs, but I think Pikachu looks great, at least. Honestly the thing about all of this that confuses me the most is...Ryan Reynolds? I mean, it makes sense, but I feel like there are other options out there for a wise crackin' dude and they just went to him yet again...ya know?

Also I understand 1000000000% why they didn't do this, BUT! I hope that Danny DeVito records all of Pikachu's dialogue somewhere and some brave soul edits it in there, and in 6 months or so post-release a "Danny DeVito version" is floating around on the internet.

I appreciate that Pikachu is wise-cracking but not mean-spirited. I thought for sure he was going to say something nasty to that one lady just because she couldn't understand him.

Deadpool 3 is definitely going to reference this movie.

Absolutely. I've watched the trailer three times and each time I expected him to say something like "you can take your adorable and shove it up your-" and was surprised when he didn't go blue.

Its' very good.

Yeah, this. I mean, it's not *surprising* that Nintendo wants to stop short of going outright rude and crude with the franchise, but it is *refreshing* in the current media climate. You can be fun and irreverent without being an asshole about it, and it looks like they're nailing it.

I don't think I'm part of the target market for this (I only played a couple of Pokemon games and not until I was older), but I'm really enjoying all of the discussion.

I’d imagine that a lot of people have tried to tackle Mr. Mime over the years.

Reportedly he wasn't interested in the role.

Thinking about it that's a big reason why I was surprisingly into this trailer despite writing this movie off completely when I first heard about it. Pikachu is likable in the very best ways.

"Pika Pika" in several different languages.
One of these things is not like the others...

EDIT: Hrm, that might be fake. Darn.

EDIT EDIT: Ohhh, it wasn't fake, the original trailer had that bit, but they've now replaced said clip with the correct voice. Thank you for going on this journey with me.
