As a time traveler, the only parties that she can vote for have futuristic names, such as the UK Independence From Robots Party, the Generically Engineered Labour Party, and the Space Tories. I suggest you update your submission accordingly.

I'm going to assume Bongo you meant to write 'Genetically Engineered', but I like it this way muuuuch much more.

I did mean Genetically. Blame my phone. However, in the spirit of this thread, you are welcome to your headcanon about my posts.

The Ace Attorney games imply two things about Phoenix:

First, he represents many of his clients pro bono, or at least very cheaply. This comes from how many of his clients are friends, how he's representing them because nobody else will, and because he personally believes in their innocence. Many of these people, too, are unemployed (Maya) or not well off (Larry, Maggey), so he couldn't even charge much if he wanted to.

Second, the only murder cases Phoenix takes on are the ones we see in the games themselves. This is implied by Phoenix's reputation as a rookie with few trials under his belt, even into the third game; Phoenix's rule that he only takes on clients he personally believes in (weeding out many potential clients); and, more importantly, that nobody ever makes any off-hand references to other, unseen cases.

Taken together, this raises an obvious question: with so few clients, and still fewer paying clients, how does Phoenix make a living? One could point to how he's had several clients who were quite well off, but it's hard to believe he could run a firm, for years, on the back of like five cases.

The answer: Phoenix mostly works in the area of traffic law and other small-time offences, and only takes on murder cases in extreme circumstances.

This dovetails nicely into my headcanon!

OK. So Phoenix gets brought on as a junior partner to Mia's law firm in the beginning of game one, right? Mia is also an established, accomplished, and respected lawyer who you assume makes good lawyerly money. But Mia gets herself murdered. Since Phoenix is the only person left at the firm, and since Mia doesn't have any living relatives other than her sister Maya, it stands to reason that the firm and all of its assets go to Phoenix and/or Maya. So if they live an austere lifestyle (which is implied by supplemental material, Phoenix's occasional anecdotes quipping about money, their predisposition to eating cheaply (ramen), and his thrifty tendencies like having a cheap phone and riding a bike) they can probably stretch her assets for quite a while to live off of.

Kurain Village is also a tourist destination, and likely does well for itself given the upkeep and level of prosperity that we see the village in during the games. It also likely receives government funding as a heritage site like many shrines do in Japan. If Phoenix needs to grift, he can probably do so with Maya as his sugar-mama. Especially once the second game comes to pass and she officially becomes the head of her village/sect and can use some of her funds to support the Wright law offices. Phoenix definitely hooks up with Maya, and part of it is a marriage of convenience. So that's my wishful thinking headcanon. The 4th game and beyond however is a different story.

Phoenix is presented as a rookie without a lot of work through the first three games. But in the 4th game, he's presented as someone who is secretly indispensable to the legal community. To the point where even as a disbarred attorney, he's still consulted and made the architect of reforming the legal system. And that prestige extends into the 4th and 5th games as well, where he's represented as someone who has his shit together, is very successful, and has numerous connections in the legal world. I would assume that beyond the 3rd game, he does lots of boring legal work and consultation jobs that pay well but operates under the table and also wouldn't make for exciting video game material. He also, like any good senior partner at a law firm, exploits his employees (Apollo, Athena, and Trucy) to do a lot of grunt legal work in his name and takes a cut.

The boring, most realistic answer to all of this however? Even if his clients are all broke, they're mostly all innocent. So he can file counter-suits for damages, which would include his legal fees. Cases like the circus case that probably wouldn't be possible for. But cases like against Mr. White? Or the crooked DA? Or the board that makes Steel Samurai? Or Edgeworth's father? Easy payola. Of course, this part of the legal process would be boring to play through so it just gets cut.

So Donkey Kong Jr. is actually Donkey Kong III? That changes everything.

I was referring to the current DK. It's already been firmly established that Cranky Kong is Donkey Kong-era DK and that Donkey Kong Jr. is the current one.
