Yeah, nothing against Argentina but it would’ve been fun to see Nigeria get through.

Likewise, nothing against Mexico or South Korea, but I still wanna see my German boys redeem themselves with the rest of the tourney.

I'm angry at Mexico for allowing Sweden so many scoring shots, but angrier still that they reach Sweden's net and then politely wait for the entire Swedish team to line up for defense. Argh.

I'm honestly quite surprised Germany isn't steamrolling South Korea by now. Yeah, if both games tie, or if Mex wins, Germany auto-advances over Sweden based on maths, but would they really leave it at that?

Yeah the goal differential calculus in this group is crazy right now...

Edit: Heh, yellow card on SKorea for diving, was worried there for a second.

Edit: Oh you've got to be kidding me.

I mean I can't say that's not fair.

Jesus what a disaster.

I have no idea who I'm even rooting for in this cup any more. Japan??

OK I think I can now

And the thing I can the most is be extremely angry at El Tri for basically lying down and dying in front of Sweden, what with SO MANY openings they allowed (which naturally resulted in a "goleada"), but then politely waited for the ENTIRE SWEDISH SQUAD to line up for a perfect defense every time a Mex player took the ball to the far end.

But I'm not angry because they lost --even though the losing scenario WAS a 2+ defeat-- but because, if Mexico had played Sweden like they played Germany, Korea would have advanced to the next round. Sure, it's nice that Korea's defeat of Germany advanced us, but Mexico's Mario basically Yoshi'd Korea into the bottomless pit. And given Korea's spectacular 2-0 (the very same miracle I wanted for them!) they ABSOLUTELY deserved to advance.

So yeah I'm quite miffed at Mexico and Korea deserved better from us than just cheers and ovations

Mexico lives, like, right next door. You should root for them.

Oh wow, just watched highlights from the afternoon and saw Costa Rica's tying goal off the back of the goalie's head. That's at least a fun way to end a match that wasn't going to change the standings.

Speaking of not changing standings, tomorrow afternoon is a sheer formality, but the morning has a few scenarios that could lead to tight goal-differential decisions...

Ok, two things:

A) Everything I root for in this tourney is cursed

B) The current way the standings and matches are in group H would leave Japan and Senegal tied with 4 points and 0 goal differential. What's the next determiner?

Yup, Japan and Senegal are tied at points and goals, and they tied their own match. The internet is telling me this comes all the way down to.... yellow cards. Of which Japan have two less so they advance apparently. Unless what I'm seeing isn't final.

Edit: looks like this is correct. It's called the "fair play tiebreaker".

Yup, Senegal had more yellow cards than Japan did, which broke the points and GD tie. If they have remained tied after the Fair Play analysis, they would've used increasingly granular methods to determine the advancement until they had to perform a literal coin toss.

I'm learning more about fútbol this World Cup than all my life living in Mexico!

EDIT: Yup, if Japan and Senegal had tied even at Fair Play, Senegal would have advanced because it scored more goals overall than Japan did (2 on Poland + 2 on Japan, vs 2 on Senegal + 1 on Colombia). Fair Play is important!

Japan scored 2 on Columbia though? They both have 4 goals four and 4 against. Pretty sure.

Edit: Yeah, each of their first games, they won 2-1. Second game they tied each other 2-2. Third game they both lost 0-1. Completely symmetrical. Craziness!

So would that go to the coin toss? Or is some other stat considered, like possession or what have you?

Edit 2: Trying to look up the regs, and it looks like yeah, after fair play the next step is just drawing lots. I don't believe this has ever happened.

Jesus Christ Monday's game.

Brazil's the only "big name" left. And it's up to Mexico to kick 'em out.

Via Pictoline

And there's always one. Always at least one knockout game that goes to penalties. Too bad for Spain, but... they couldn't clinch it in the game itself but for a self-goal, so...

I've been able to watch the replays of the World Cup games on my Roku through the Fox Sports channel which has been pretty great. But when I select the program I want to watch it also comes up with a list of suggested other videos. So naturally, even though I made a point to avoid seeing the scores Fox spoiled the outcome of the Croatia-Denmark game with one of their suggested highlight videos. They've got some real geniuses at Fox.

Welp, that was a predictable result.

Since it's extraordinarily unlikely Japan will beat both Belgium and Brazil, I'll be rooting for Uruguay until they, too, end up going against Brazil.

The left side of the QF bracket is loaded with all the legit contenders that are left. Naturally, this means that whomever comes out of the right side will win it all.
