Default Hockey: Legends of the Ice

Jaromir Jagr, age 45, has been assigned by the Calgary Flames to HC Kladno in a move that likely signifies the end of Jagr's NHL career. It makes me a bit sad to think that the NHL will no longer have this amazing talent that entered the league in 1990(!) as a dopey looking kid and became one of its legends. Jagr became iconic to me not just for his skill on the ice but from the stories of his legendary workout regimens and the time when the unmarried Jagr slept with a young woman who then tried to blackmail him with an intimate photo and his reaction was "I don't care".

NHL's twitter page has a great image commemorating all the teams Jagr has played with during his career.

And of course, Jagr was one of the great scorers of his day. He had a zillion great goals but this is the one I find most amazing. He someone manages to keep handling the puck even after being taken down at the knees from behind and after he's been knocked down he manages to keep sliding on his side towards the goal and use his stick to shoot at the goalie. The goalie initially deflects the shot and then Jagr, still careening along the ice, manages to knock the puck out of the air and into the net. It's really an incredible display of tenacious, improvisation, technical precision, and stupendous reflexes.

Jagr is the best!

Montreal sucks this season, so I've been decidedly detached from the NHL this year. Vegas certainly is a happy surprise, though!

A buddy of mine said, “Jaromir Jagr is still playing so I’m not an adult yet.”

Trade deadline happened. Top trades?

1. NYR McDonagh to TBL for Namestnikov

2. NYR Rick Nash to BOS

3. BUF Evander Kane to SJS

4. DET Tomas Tatar to VGK

5. STL Paul Stastny to WPG

Montreal made very few trades, but perhaps most notably was Tomas Plekanec going to the leafs. Deeply unsettling seeing him in a Toronto jersey.
Beyond that, there are rumors Montreal was trying to move Pacioretty. I think he'll be traded before the draft, but who knows.

The Red Wings have lost ten straight games, sitting above only Vancouver/Arizona/Buffalo in the standings, and are now squarely in Rasmus Dahlin territory.

It will be flatly unacceptable if both Ken Holland and Jeff Blashill return next season in their respective roles.

If Edmonton gets the #1 pick, we storm the mansion of Gary Bettman and burn the lottery system to the ground.

Or worse... if Chicago gets the #1 pick (shudder)

Holland has to go for sure. Don't really care about Blashill.

It's playoff time. I guess we've lost all our hockey fans?

I don't think the Flyers stand any chance in their series with the Penguins, but hey, stranger things have happened.

I'm still watching, just crossing my fingers that the Sabres get the first pick in the draft... or at least one of the top three. It's a 50/50 shot! Come on please we're hurting here

But I am super excited for the Stanley Cup Playoffs as I am every year. Rooting for the Preds to make it all the way, as their fanbase deserves it.

I wish I didn't live in such a total wasteland for NHL coverage. I particularly feel like I'm missing out on witnessing the story of the Golden Knights who have now swept their way through the first round of the playoffs.

Reddit has a "NHLStreams" subreddit (and also a corresponding subreddit for every major north american sport). Make use of it! It's simultaneously the NBA/NHL playoffs, as well as the start to the MLS/MLB seasons, and I've been watching ALL THE SPORTS

I’m a Preds fan living in Alabama, so I’ve been able to see all of their games via Fox Sports (and their app). Have had a harder time keeping up with the Rangers.

Anyway, happy to see my boys bounce back! Kinda lost their grip in the third, though.

Just watched Ryan Ellis take a puck to the face and the announcers mentioned that he was already had fourteen stitches from a skate to the face on Friday that him just under his eye. Which just reaffirms my stance that every player should wear a full shield and the hyper-macho culture of the NHL that thinks you have to have a face full of broken teeth to prove your manliness is idiotic.

So the Stanley Cup Final begins tonight. Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals versus the Vegas Golden Knights. One of the greatest goal scorers in hockey history versus a team that literally did not exist one year ago. If you're only casually interested in hockey, this is absolutely the time to get on board because this is the best story in all of pro sports right now.

Those were a thrilling first two games. Both had their shares of amazing block, stops, and shots, leading to a 1-1 tie in the series. The series shifts to DC where the Capitals don't have nearly the same sort of home advantage Vegas does... the excitement continues!

I'm not much of a hockey fan, but I am apparently a huge Gritty fan. If I could be bothered to track down gifs and post them, I would fill this post with that googley-eyed monstrosity.

Gotta say, if you asked me to predict the standings at the start of the season, one thing I wouldn't have predicted would be the Penguins, Knights, and Kings in the bottom three. Still early on in the season obviously, but yikes. Gotta wonder if they'll make any changes.

Posting this article just for the first video in it.

Ryan Johansen's "controller disconnected" shootout move is hilarious and awesome and he pulled it off again last night.

RIP to “Terrible” Ted Lindsay! The dude lived to 93, had a fantastic career, lived to see a major award named after him, seemed to be in great physical and mental health, and reportedly passed peacefully. Not bad at all. Thanks for fighting for players’ rights and inventing the “victory skate with the Cup” tradition! And thanks for being one of the key figures of the greatest stretch in Detroit sports history!

Today is the thirty year anniversary of Clint Malurchuck's life threatening injury and ESPN has reposted an excerpt from his book detailing the event and Vietnam veteran medic who came to his aid. Warning: this was a gruesome injury that nearly killed him. Don't click the link if you would find that unsettling!

I was never even aware of that until something similar happened to Richard Zednik just over a decade ago. Zednik's was hard to watch, but Malarchuk's made my stomach drop out.

The Habs are fighting for the last wild card spot in the east. Nipping at their tail is the Blue Jackets, who are 2 points behind with a game in hand.

Tomorrow night, they play each other. Both teams coming off big wins from last night.

It's not an elimination game as there's still a handful of games to be played, but it'll likely determine the fate of these two teams' seasons.

It will be a very fun hockey game to watch!
