Default Pitchers, catchers, and nerds report: Baseball 2018

Never too early to get hype!

Also, I needed a new thread to post this good news: Cleveland Indians Will Abandon Chief Wahoo Logo Next Year

Of course changing the NAME would be better, but I'll take it.

Atlanta fan checking in! So glad we don’t have to suffer playoff heartbreak these days! So much less stressful to just not make it in the first place.

GO BARVES

The Braves will probably be good in 2 or 3 years.

Maybe by the time the braves are good again they will make me want to go to their Cobb county stadium, but for now I still have no plans to make that trek. Fuck that stadium and the racist twats who won't let the trains run up to it.

Fuck that fucking stadium forever.

There wasn't a goddamn thing wrong with the Ted, and the Ted was ACTUALLY IN GODDAMN ATLANTA! You could look out over the outfield and see the ATL skyline! The saddest thing about the new one is they have like three or four buildings right up against the stadium in a pathetic attempt to recreate that view, or remind you of it. They're the kind of buildings that are made to look big, but aren't. It's fucking sad and stupid and a gigantic waste of public funds.

The place also suffers from what I guess a lot of ultra modern parks do: you don't *feel* like you're at a ballpark until you're in your seat. It just feels like walking around a weird shopping mall.

It's whitewashed bullshit, the whole fucking thing.

The Ted used to run a special where you got unlimited concessions (ok, big deal) and unlimited beer (!!!) in a special section. The seats were really high up, but not bad at all and the kegs were right behind the seats so you didn't miss any action getting a refill.

A group of my friends and I used to make a day of that once a year and we did it for many years running. We called it Caligula Baseball and it was great and OF COURSE THIS NEW BULLSHIT STADIUM DOESN'T DO THAT

The year that Caligula Baseball day coincided with the Braves' alumni softball game was just too much! They turned the taps on for the softball game, which was about 6 or 7 innings I think? Then kept them on for the game itself.

Goddamnit. Now I want a plastic cup of cold, shitty beer and a hot day watching baseball.

My biggest annoyance is that they want to make going to a baseball game a day-long family event when it used to be something you could just decide to do an hour before the game. The summer my wife and I started dating we had Sundays off together and most home games we took the train in, bought the cheapest seats available, and stood out in the outfield bar The Chop House. It would cost maybe $20+ each, more if we drank a lot. Now it cost like $25 to fucking park there. Baseball in Atlanta used to be a city thing that you came in for. Now it's a goddamn mall that you buy packages for. It's been gentrified in the worst ways like the rest of the fucking city.

I wonder how the Ms will piss away their potential this year.

If it helps, they're currently projected by Fangraphs to have the 8th best record in the league. Which is well out of the playoffs even before failing to meet expectations.

I still think you could drop all the tomahawks and whatnot but still keep the name Braves since it's not, you know, an actual racial slur, but I'd be down with whatever makes people comfortable.

Ah, spring training, that time of year where half of all baseball news is "somebody got injured".

while everyone gets in the groove for baseball, here's one of the best podcasts I've ever heard from a couple of months ago:https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/effe...t/#more-271910

backstory is that Jeff Sullivan found one of the most unbelievable baseball coincidences, and one player involved happened to not only be available to chat, but also is wonderfully charming with a bonkers steel-trap mind.

This is a late response, but yes, that episode of Effectively Wild is absolutely amazing. Well worth listening to for any fan of baseball history.

Double-post to say that Sheryl Ring, Fangraphs' contributor who focuses on the intersection of baseball and the law, has been kicking ass lately. Her posts about whether a woman could sue MLB for excluding women and whether service-time manipulation is a violation of the CBA are particularly fascinating.

I was wondering if there was reason to hope for Royals fans this year. They aren't likely to be good, but maybe ....

Then Sal Perez strained his MCL carrying his luggage into his house after returning from spring training. So no, there is no hope.

The Yankees basically have two Aaron Judges now. It's pretty wild.

Braves come back from 5-0 to win on a walk-off! Nice way to start the season.

the true fun of baseball is that even through thousands of games each year for over a hundred years, new things just keep happening

The thing about the Yankees is that they have Giancarlo Stanton, and he has the 3rd highest career HR/game rate on the team.
