Default Football '17 pt. 2: New New England

I still think the Patriots ruin everything. Meanwhile hopefully Matchstick can move the previous thread into this one and it won't be registered peoples only? It's a worthwhile experiment.

Woo, Vikes! I look forward to them losing the first home-team Super Bowl to the Patriots.

I'm definitely rooting for a Minnesota/New England Super Bowl. But I'm also so happy that all four teams remaining have excellent coaching staffs. It's refreshing to see coaches who put their players in the best position for them to succeed unlike the backwards progress Tennessee had with Mariota or Jeff Fisher did with the Rams to both Case Keenum and Nick Foles. Even Jacksonville has made Blake Bortles looks like a reasonable QB this year which seems like a Herculean coaching achievement.

You can almost squint (Brady's hand is supposedly hurt, Vikings have a long history of heartbreaking losses) and see a potential Bortles/Foles Super Bowl.

Losing to the Eagles would merely be bad, losing the Super Bowl at home is what would be heartbreaking.

They got John Malkovich to do the (somewhat meta) promo for today's Patriots/Jaguars game. How peculiar.

And Jacksonville can't hold on to the late lead, Brady makes another heroic comeback, and the Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl for the third time in four years, and Tom Brady makes it to an incredible eighth Super Bowl in sixteen years as a starting QB. What an awe inspiring run of success the Brady/Belichick Patriots have had over this decade and the last.

Credit to an awesome Jacksonville team. The defense is fantastic, the coaching is excellent, and Blake Bortles played far better than I thought Bortles could perform against the indomitable Patriots in New England. I hope this is the start of a period of sustained success for the Jaguars.

Aw man I really want the Vikings to be in the Super Bowl but since it's currently 7-31 it looks like that's not happening. Bummer.

Gadzooks, the Eagles are just annihilating the Vikings, having scored 31 points in a row. Barring a second miracle by Minnesota it looks like Philly and New England will have a rematch of 2004's Super Bowl XXXIX. It's remarkable that essentially the entire organization of Philadelphia has turned over multiple times since then while New England still has the same coach and QB that represent the foundation of their ongoing success.

Look, I don't hate the Patriots? I'm obligated by civic duty to root for them and wear the jersey at office parties? And I kinda want the city to be happy, even if I do hate football victories (especially Super Bowl victories) contributing to the Massholes and their Massholery?

But if a fiery crack full of brimstone and the wailing of the damned opened beneath Belichick I would neither be surprised nor particularly upset.

(And I'm boycotting the games anyway because of the Kaepernick situation so I only get to hear of final scores.)

It might be even better if they make it to the Bowl and get their teeth kicked in.

Eagles vs. Patriots in the most American of bowls. They might as well trot out the zombie of George Washington to sing the national anthem.

Not necessarily. I for one would have greatly enjoyed the "Is Brady/the Patriots dynasty over???" hot takes had they flamed out earlier in the playoffs.

Get ready to have the Rocky theme pounded into your brain over the next two weeks.

Or longer if the Eagles win.

Brady already has a solid case as the best QB ever, and Belichick as the best coach ever. That's not going away. In fifty years there will be a hotshot QB slinging touchdowns for the Neo Miami Mermen and people will be saying "He's good, but Brady was better. Talk to me when he has six rings that won't fit on his webbed hands!"

I imagine there were people in 1990 making that argument about Joe Montana.

Hey, Montana still has more video games named after him.

(Now I'm imagining Brady getting really angry that he doesn't have any Sega Genesis games where he's featured and that it makes him so angry he throws seven touchdowns against the Jets. I find this notion unreasonably humorous.)

Speaking of Montana vs Brady, I'll never forgive the Niners passing over the next Joe Montana, and hometown boy, who grew up idolizing Montana and dreaming of playing for the Niners. Oh, they did this twice btw, with Rodgers too. It's a slight comfort that in a reversal, we sniped the next Tom Brady instead out from the Pats. But that still isn't enough for me to forgive the team from leaving SF.

By the principles of Numbers Going Up, it will be harder for a new QB to eclipse Brady than it was for Brady to eclipse Montana.

I think Jimmy Garoppolo as the next Tom Brady is going to be the new "Paul Manafort will be dead within the week." But we'll see!

This guy on one of the Seahawks FB pages I follow has a Seahawks comic he draws and posts regularly and it's like football Mallard Fillmore but I know I don't dare criticize how shitty his comic is.

This is also the page where MAGA hats from Puyallup and Fife regularly excoriate Michael Bennett for kneeling. I should probably just unlike the damn page.

On the topic of of Brady vs Montana (or marino or manning or whomever else), it's a dumb topic even if we ignore the fact that play at high levels is at a squint, and even more across eras. The nature of football is so much of a coach's/team's game and scheme vs scheme so even ignoring that brady has had one hc his entire career you're playing a huge guessing game of individual performance.
anway otto graham is the best qb of all time

It does amuse me how all the media personalities that look for street cred by yelling "Johnny Unitas Bart Starr!" at the top of their lungs never think to mention Graham.
