It's still kind of weird they didn't have this ready to roll out when Club Nintendo ended. I'd like to get credit on the digital purchases I've made since then, but I doubt that'll happen...

I can't help but think that having two different types of points that sound similar but are earned and spent in such different ways is such a Nintendo thing to do.

Man, I was going to remark that platinum is better than gold, so they had them swapped... but I didn't realize platinum prices are down right now, so gold is worth more. Go figure!

It seems deliberate that this is rolling out the same year as the NX is supposed to come out. Club Nintendo was another expense eating away at Nintendo's bottom line through some rough financial periods, so it makes sense that they wanted to suspend the program until they could leverage it for their next big console launch.

Platinum is definitely higher prestige than gold. Any noob can buy a game, but it takes a noob with time and focus to play a game.

Just like every other prestige content system ever.

I wonder what the chances are of getting in fast enough to take the screen name "Sprite."

Although, wait, they already rolled this out in Japan, huh? It's probably already gone

I would bet it's tied to your Nintendo Network ID, so I imagine that info would carry into your My Nintendo.

This is supplanting the NNID, so maybe not.

So I guess preregistration for My Nintendo and the mobile game thing starts tomorrow, assuming they are still on schedule. Mildly hyped, at least to see what they have planned. I hope it's a program where it's not too hard to get free games or whatever.

http://accounts.nintendo.com

Go register! There's nothing to do with it yet, though.

My Nintendo is different from Nintendo Account.

My Nintendo is Club Nintendo's replacement.
Nintendo Account is just that, a global account that will tie their mobile games, NX, My Nintendo, and more into one portal.

Japanese name entry, expanding from four or five characters in the 80s and 90s to a grand total of ten in just two decades. What a time to be alive.

Fortunately 'SpoonyBard' is exactly 10 letters long.

So we can't actually DO anything with this yet, right? It's just the sign-up phase?

Just to note, I don't believe that the user name has to be unique. I was able to just put "Michael" as my name.

5 unicode script characters (ie Japanese) is 10 bytes, but 10 ASCII (ie English) is 10 bytes. No expansion necessary.

You can pre-register for Miitomo!

Whatever that means.

It means you get an email when Miitomo comes out and 1 (one) entire Platinum Point to spend as you wish!

You can just register with your NNID if account name length limits are a problem.

Huh, I guess a cookie from the Nintendo Accounts site (which I signed up for earlier today using my NNID) keeps you signed in cross-site for Miitomo - I just hit a button and it said I'm preregistered without my having to give it any login or account info.

It's a little bit amateur that there's no widget showing who you're signed in as anywhere (on the Miitomo preorder page), but eh, Nintendo's new at this universal account stuff.

I'm wondering how you will connect with friends on this. Do you do it by NID? Do you do it by email address? Will it automatically add my Wii U & 3DS friends? If Nintendo is serious about a universal account, and answer should be Yes to all, but who knows?

I'm much more interested in what the My Nintendo account and coin system will look like in practice, but I'll totally use Miitomo as a light social network if checking it for a few minutes a day earns me free/cheap games.

I imagine you keep friends from NiD but also can add them from Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
