Proposal: sophisticated, straightforward humor that relies on slapstick punchlines can appeal to both adults that enjoy clean, smart comedy, and to kids who are building up their language and visual skills and thus benefit from not being talked down to.

The show's target audience is me, specifically.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my nephew to watch Ducktales. He's fairly resistant to suggestions, and has refused to give Steven Universe a passing glance.

My current thoughts are maybe I should wait to bring it up until the Minecraft tie-in happens.

Watch it on a portable electronic device while he's nearby, then if he expresses any interest begrudgingly allow him to watch it with you.

Youtube keeps trying to get me to watch a Nostalgia Critic video about the new Duck Tales.

There is no way I am going to do that. However, I am quite taken with the image used to promote the video of Doug Walker with a cartoon duck beak grafted onto his face, particularly as he appears to be screaming in horror at this unexpected turn of events.

I am going to assume that this freakish man-duck hybrid is now an official part of the Nostalgia Critic "canon", and that from now on whenever he tries to do one of his oh-so-sarcastic put-downs of a bad film that's still probably better then anything he's produced in his career, he can only emit an incomprehensible quacking noise.

Not that anyone will notice the difference.

Seems like it creates an unnecessary risk of accidentally viewing the video.

Also:
Someone mixed the original DuckTales opening theme's instrumental track into the new song and...
yeah...
An adventure theme needs brass I guess?

I noticed that iTunes would finally let me download the pilot and watched it today. Even with headphones, Donald was just way too unintelligible. This is fine when he's just making angry sounds but when he's having multi-line dialogue with other characters, couldn't they dial it down a little?

I really liked Tennant and duck Mabel.

I feel I will have to watch this entire show with subtitles on, yes.

Man, never had this problem when I was reading Carl Barks...

They could even lampshade it with him getting more incoherent and quacky as he gets worked up, following the normal progression of barely intelligible to full-on quacking sounds where he's obviously cursing like a sailor. Just let me understand his exposition about his houseboat lifestyle.

I've never had trouble understanding Donald in anything, but I've been finding I'm definitely an outlier in this.

Donald's voice is why he had a diminished role in the prior series compared to the comics. His duties - the only person willing to call Scrooge out, the "everyman" who's highly aware of how crazy this adventure is, the moral center - were distributed among the other characters, most notably Launchpad.

It seems in the new series that the triplets themselves are deriving their much-needed differentiation by dividing up aspects of Donald.

I have to admit, there's a part of me that wants Donald to get subtitles mostly just so the other characters can react to the subtitles as though they were an in-universe phenomenon

"Oh great, Uncle Donald's speaking Quackese again. Someone turn on his subtitles!""
"Wot's 'e saying, laddie?"
"...someone turn on Uncle Scrooge's too."

They're all incomplete versions of Scrooge, too. Louie has his greed but not his drive. Dewey has his drive but not his cunning. Huey has his cunning but not his [insufficient data on Huey].

Reminder, two new episodes today. Or, this evening, rather. Looks like they're airing at 7:30pm EST on Disney XD, which is later than I would have expected.

If you missed the two-parter premiere that's airing a few times today as well.

FLATULENCE

The show is still pretty gosh danged great. Character Actress Margo Martindale does a great job as Ma Beagle, and I'm liking what I'm seeing of (a slightly more sinister?) Gyro.
