Don't get me wrong, Disgaea is tons of fun and stupid grinding aside there's a lot to it, but it's battle system is very dominate-or-be-dominated, with almost no room in-between
I don't think I agree but it may be a differance in party make-up. I tend to use a lot of fighters rather than casters. They tend to be pretty hard to kill in one hit so one mistake can't really ruin it for me.

It's also designed into the game, in that, letting someone die and then using it is one of a couple options to get past a very difficult part of one mission.
You just described all the things I don't like about the game. All the silly rules about money and items and there is no way to level up new characters easily.
I just find the game frustrating. (but fun for awhile)

Recent iterations have improved the money/items situation considerably. Permadeath is still permadeath, but I've never seen a mission I couldn't take without death by the second or third time through.

Contrast with that one mission from Advance Wars DS (Yay!) that you lost if an enemy occupied a single missile base.

I posted video of Advance Wars DS 2 in this thread, which either everyone missed or only I think is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Unlike everyone I don't restart when character's die, because I ain't a babby. The games are built to be beaten without restarting and the items are there to be used. If you can get over limiting yourself, the games become even better.

One of my fave series <3

Unlike Fire Emblem, Talking Time's thread mechanics do not feature permadeath.

Fut the whack?!

This thread has been dead for nine years. NINE YEARS.

We have a modern FE thread, ya know. And if you wanna talk Advance Wars we don't mind ya making a new thread for that.

I deleted and moved my earlier post. But I'm just going to reiterate something I've said before. The forum search function really sucks.

Why don't we have a new Wars series entry in this era of Kantai Collections and the like

This is at least partly because the majority of our thread titles and tags are jokes though.

Yo what the heck, I thought this was contemporary. My bad for not looking at the dates, but I saw this on the front page and just went blammo.

Whoops.

Apparently a couple of gifs are all that's required to get AW music stuck in my head.

This is not a complaint.

I might do an Advance Wars 2 LP if I ever finish DC:SS. Hopefully there'd be some interest in that!

I feel like all the hate I saw Dual Strike get has turned it into a really underappreciated DS gem. Especially with faux grimdark anime garbage factory Days of Ruin.

All Advance Wars are excellent.

Actually, I still have an untouched copy of Battalion Wars 2 on my shelf. Should really get to that.

Days of Ruin is not grimdark. It's got a more serious setting and slightly more realistic character design, but it's incredibly goofy and full of jokes and larger-than-life characters.

The European version is grim and gritty though, isn't it?

The American version just had lots of wacky tossed in because otherwise whoof

My thoughts while playing the euro version:

Just like regular Advance Wars, but they don't try to frame the story behind "everybody's dead, the world is ruined," and they're also less dumb.

If they had put support conversations in Advance Wars, maybe it would not have died.

I dunno, the original Advance Wars continuity is pretty dumb. You could argue that not treating war like a Saturday morning cartoon is less dumb.

I sincerely love that aspect though.

In AW1 it's mentioned that units aren't killed or destroyed, they're scared away. Meaning that my anti-air gun frightened 60% of a plane.

It's a squadron of planes.

Alternate answer: you literally destroyed 60% of the plane. At 100% damage it crashes, and the pilots are "scared away" at that point.

Which interpretation is more Octo between yours and mine, however?
