Position him beside someone he has a high chance of teaming up with, and have the other character attack. He won't get nearly as much experience that way, but it will give him enough of a leg up to catch up to the point he can fight Random Battle enemies alone.

Plus, unlike other characters, Donnel can promote twice, making him the games Magikarp.

Is that people from his support list?

Yeah, baseline support rates are something like 10% for offense, and the rates for both offense/defense increase substantially with each support rank (higher support rank also grants higher stat bonuses with Pair Up as well).

The new Fire Emblem game is called Fire Emblem: Three Houses and is not coming until Spring 2019, which sucks, because I distinctly remember the reveal mentioning 2018 (thought it might have been something along the lines of "more info coming 2018", and my memory just latched on to the date and omitted everything else).

Looks like this time your create-a-character is the mentor of the protagonist (a girl??? woah), which sounds like a pretty interesting dynamic.

Also, you can command huge formations of generic units, which will definitely contribute to making battles feel like actual clashes between large armies.

I HOPE that the "Three Houses" subtitle is in no way a reference to there being three separate games, because I hated that Fates bullshit.

I believe the generic units are just flavor. (If you look at the mini-map, it’s still a grid with single characters.) People have speculated for years that you individual characters “actually” represent small units, with the named characters as captains or officers, and this seems to play into that idea now that they’ve got the technology to graphically represent it.

No, your minions were very important in Langrisser. Usually to prevent your horrible death.

It seemed to have a mechanic based on choosing a formation for your units' personal mook squad escorts.

Three houses for that Romance of the Three Kingdoms flavor, I guess.

I'm not a fan of the feature creep in the latest installments of FE (character skills, copious items?), but battle formations could be super interesting as long as they don't just stack it on top of all the other mechanics. Into the Breach was a good argument for more stripped down turn based battles, so I guess I hope FE:TH takes some notes.

I'm guessing they'll get rid of Pair Up to focus on Formation.

Didn't see any Pair Up going on there. Some nice UI modernization going on. It looked like weapon durability is back.

Here are portraits of the three main characters: Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude, from the titular three houses. Your avatar appears to be Edelgard's mentor, which I hope means they're not doing kids again.

Fun fact: Edelgard is an anagram for Edgelard, so you're not far off.

Looking at it a little more, the costuming seems more modern than is typical for the series. I don’t really need guns, but it would be interesting to see them break out of bog-standard medieval fantasy.

Yeah, this was always my headcanon.

Claude is very handsome and looks like a fun dude to hang out with. I wonder if you get to choose which one you mentor?

People who like this series may be interested in SRPG Studio. (This is apparently not what Vestaria Saga was made in)

I have found myself in the midst of an unexpected Fire Emblem kick, and am considering trying Fates, specifically Conquest since it allegedly has more interesting maps and objectives. BUT, its story sounds like it could be utterly infuriating and obnoxious, and it pains me to skip cutscenes (Valkyria Chronicles 4 got better, but at its worst I did have to skip cutscenes and it almost killed me, barely survived that, can't endure another bout of cutscene-skipping like that) so I'm kinda worried.

Corrin, don't annoy me too much.

...Corrin, everything about how you handle the situation of having an obviously evil king kidnapper-dad is going to annoy me, isn't it.

Corrin may be the most singularly dumb JRPG protagonist I have ever seen.

And yes, I am counting every other JRPG protagonist when I say that.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Octo, Deptford. Overall I really dislike Corrin in Fates (I find them fine in Smash and FE Warriors) and the plot of Fates, and if you're going into this for any semblance of an enjoyable narrative, turn back now.

After you complete Conquest you can play Fire Emblem Fates Revelations (for a nominal fee) and enjoy a terrible story combined with romhack maps.

Conquest has maybe the worst story of any game I've ever played. I've heard that Revelations is just as bad, and that Birthright is serviceable, but boring.

On the other hand, Conquest has my favorite maps/mechanics in the series.

What makes conquest maps so good all I’ve ever heard is they’re “good” and it’s no justification
