I never really expected Zelda to be old. I always figured she was in stasis with Ganon. The narrative was that she was struggling to "hold" him, or something like that, and her voice guiding link never gave me any reason to think she wasn't basically the same girl from the flashbacks.

I knew Zelda wasn't going to turn out to be old because that's not something Nintendo would do, but I did think about it and it did vaguely bother me.

Seems to me that there are two games that are really easy to place if you inisist upon a timeline, and this is one of them.

No, you see it was a very funny joke about the great debate in this thread about Zelda's age... Oh never mind.

Default Cool things are in Breath of the Wild (SPOILERS)

I though Zelda would be old and wacky science lady would de-age her.

I thought the cut scenes were showing her Triforce light shining from a window where she was literally trapped by swirling spectral Calamity Ganon, who is besiegeing Hyrule Castle where Zelda has shielded herself. The reality of what you actually find in Hyrule Castle is very different from what I was imagining.

Huh. I wonder if they were really considering that, and decided to leave the lore for it in game.

I certainly like the idea that nobody (except perhaps zelda herself, who did the research) would have any idea what sort of physiological effects that the ganon-containment magic would have on her, and so you've got purah doing all sorts of crazy experiments on stasis and anti-aging motivated by that.

I didn't think Zelda would have aged, mostly on account of the fact that her telepathic voice didn't seem old.

Because it sounds exactly like the voice they make when they speak with their throat.

Based on the fact that everyone Link psychically communicates with in the game sounds like they sound. All one person.

If that weren't how it worked, than it wouldn't have worked that way!!

Huh, it never even occurred to me that the "I look like a little girl but I'm actually not" character might've been a plot device and not just a terrible anime trope.

Although I didn't buy the DLC until I'd already completed most of the game (including over one hundred Shrines), that Travel Medallion really comes in handy while exploring Hyrule Castle. I'm mopping up the game's final few sidequests before beating Ganon and right now my warp point is sitting just outside the Sanctum, ready to go whenever.

Psychically projected voices sound like they do because of media telling us that's how they sound, which is to say, the telepathic voice mimics the speaking voice. See Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker for further information.

I'm going out on a limb and assuming that we think a telepathic voice sounding the same as a physically spoken voice is because of our own thoughts. We think in language - a lot of thinking is really just talking to yourself without the vocalization. Also, reading silently. LIKE YOU'RE PROBABLY DOING RIGHT NOW.

If your internal voice - your mind's voice or whatever - sounds like a 90-year-old woman but you're physically a girl of 18 or so then, cool, whatever. But don't act incredulous if your audience gives a collective "WTF, dude." To wit, if Zelda spoke telepathically with an old lady's voice, the player would assume some non-Zelda entity was speaking to them.

I could see the vocal change as a plot device or a way of pulling the rug out from under the player. For example, if Zelda projects an old lady's voice but when you finally meet her, she's young. Or, better yet, vice versa, with young Zelda's voice but she's old. Even so, there would likely need to be a story element for this or the player is likely to call bullshit and it wouldn't be entirely without justification. You couldn't just spring that and not explain it- unless you want your audience to scratch their heads, which could be just as well.

I guess we all conceptualize thought differently but I definitely don't imagine I'm hearing my own voice (or any voice) in my head, and generally I don't really think in sentences either, unless I'm trying to plan something to say or write.

"Thinking" and "thought" are difficult words to really talk about it you when you think about it. (Pun not intended.) I guess what I'm talking about in this context is verbal thinking or inner speech. Not all thought is verbal, of course. Babies and animals probably don't think in speech. But within the realm of telepathic communication, I have to assume it's analogous to vocal speech, so any particular voice will be reflective of that person's physical vocalizations, e.g. young Zelda would have a young voice, telepathic or otherwise.

I guess it does raise the question of how Link hears Zelda's voice. Does she speak to him but he "hears" the speech in his mind or is Zelda's telepathy more like beaming the information directly to Link, and the speech part is just for the benefit of the player?

Also: I've thought about this way too deeply.

If Nintendo had wanted to go to there, they could have just said that Zelda's messages to Link were recorded onto the Slate just after the Calamity, somehow.

But considering the rest of the story, such as it is, it would have been a little too cruel to Zelda to lose her future in addition to her family, most of her friends, and the world that she once knew (one thing BotW does really well is impress upon the player how prosperous and vast Hyrule must have been before Calamity Ganon returned.)

Beat Breath of the Wild which I think is the best Zelda game since Link to the Past, even better than Ocarina of Time. I hope they pump out a BOTW2 relatively quickly.

I wish there were more types of baddie, I wish there was one larger dungeon to get through, and I wish the world had a few more minor villages like the south-west fishing village but otherwise it was so great. I'm done for now with playing it until the 2nd DLC comes out, but spending 55 hours on a Zelda game seems immense.

Think I was somewhere around 140 hours when I finally beat BotW, but a good chunk of that was spent maxing out all the armor and sweeping up every last shrine.

I guess now I need to buy second Switch game.
