This looks great!

For one horrible second I thought the cat was going to claw out Fury's eye.

We need a Marvel Star Wars cross-over where Shang Chi is a master of Teras Kasi

Oh, he absolutely is.

Dunno if commentary reacting on the trailer deserves to be spoiler-tagged, but...

THAT is an interesting explanation about why Carol was working for/with the Kree for so long--and why she'll probably end up fighting Ronan and Jude Law's character (and the Supreme Intelligence?) in the end, with the Skrulls as a second-string faction. I wonder if the Kree will have renamed her Mar-Vell right off the bat, leading to hilarious jokes about Fury mispronouncing her name over and over to her chagrin, or if they'll use a legacy codename (Warbird, Binary, etc) as her Space Force callsign.

What I wanna know if why that plane says "Maria 'Photon' Rambeau" instead of "Monica". Is it supposed to be her mom or something?

It's presumably Maria Rambeau in the past, just in case they ever want to introduce a young Monica Rambeau in the present time, either as a superhero or just as a supporting character to serve whatever other purpose.

Geez, looking at the reactions on Twitter, people are falling over themselves to criticize Brie Larson's performance. It seems pretty on par with most MCU dialogue, so I can't imagine why anyone would be more critical to this performance in particular compared to other MCU leads.

Can't think of any reason.

At all.

Nope.

I will say that I am a bit betwixt and between here.

On the one hand, the scene where Captain Marvel walks up to an old lady and punches her right in the grill without context now has context and some of the magic is gone.

On the other hand, now we have a Parkour Granny fight. And that’s very much in my wheelhouse.

Complaining about performance in a Marvel trailer is especially dumb because they very frequently use different takes than in the final movie

... "Takes"? You mean they don't film them in one single pass, following a script that was materialized whole from the mind of the all-knowing MCU overlords?

I mean usually trailers use the same takes that are in the actual movie.

So Shang Chi

Like hooray for representation, but isn't this like too wrapped up in weird 60s-70s fetishism?

Reminds me of Seinfeld and Donna Chang:

Quote:
JERRY

[is redialing] Should've talked to her; I love Chinese women.

ELAINE

Isn't that a little racist?

JERRY

If I like their race, how can that be racist?..
Of course he is wrong, by way of tokenizing Donna.

So! Can they move forward a character who isn't all wrapped up in kung fu mysticism? As a white guy am I talking out of my ass?

Additionally: can Marvel debut a character in movie world, with no comic analogue? Don't they have the power to do that now? Like Yondu MCU is 100% not Yondu comics. And no one cares.

Almost no one even knows who he is to begin with and the backstory is really shitty. They should just reinvent it. Marvel has recently gotten a lot better at having minority and women directed movies, so I expect they'll do well with this too.

Regardless, there will be a really loud group shouting about how Marvel unjustly changed their favorite character ever, not because the trolls ever cared about him but because they are racist and want to stir things up. If Marvel wasn't changing this old character, they would find something else to complain about. They don't want minorities to have starring roles. They don't matter, and Marvel should go ahead and reinvent him anyway.

Can they just make a new original character whole cloth, and debut them in the movies?

It's just going to be a new character in everything but name.

Another character wrapped up in weird 60s-70s fetishism was Black Panther, honestly.

And in this case it's legally required to be different, because the original comic literally licensed Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu books, which Marvel stopped doing a long time ago. Marvel Studios is . . . definitely not going to pay the Rohmer Estate so that Shang Chi's dad can still be Literally Fu Manchu.

It will all come down to execution: Will this fix a messy concept, like Black Panther? Or will it be a messy concept totally unexamined, like Doctor Strange? My guess is that the success of Black Panther and the state of global movie markets will encourage them to aim for the former, although there is a lot of room to mess it up.

Maybe they should bring back The Yellow Claw.

Bleh at the title.

So most of what we were told about the title in advance of this were outright lies, including and especially that it is not spoken during Infinity War. They may as well have just called it Infinity War Part II.

WHATEVER, I'LL TAKE IT

Tony's monologue at the beginning was stirring and excellent. Most of the rest of it doesn't tell us much aside from the Hawkeye reveal, and going out on Scott was a lot less impactful than IW's "Who the hell are you guys?" But it gives me what I so desperately needed, a little taste, and now I'm good to settle in for the not-so-long wait. HYPE

I laughed at the last part. It was a really different type of trailer than what we got for Infinity War, and I get what they’re going for, but it’s not quite as exciting. It would be hard to try to out spectacle those Infinity War trailers though.

I'm fine with it being just a low-key teaser at this point. Marvel will likely try to position Carol as the next Big Player to lead the MCU, and she's expected to be a very large part of Endgame, so I believe a much more thorough trailer will hit just after her movie does.

Thanos' plan is so dumb that I couldn't help but laugh out loud as Black Widow summarized it solemnly while a single tear rolled down Captain America's eye.

Anyway, this is a very confident trailer. They know they don't really need to hard sell this movie at this point in time. The first one made a bazillion dollars and had a memorable sequel hook. This is performing a function more like just touching base with their fans. It makes sense to take a restrained approach. They don't need to give anything away just yet.

Should have gone with the idea that I had strongly in my head that I kept forgetting to vocalize whenever the "name the next Avengers movie" threads happened:
