Delving deeper into the 80s (hardly), I downloaded Duran Duran's eponymous first album and Rio. And while I remain an unabashed fan of Hungry Like a Wolf, I definitely prefer their freshman effort. The hooks are better, the instrumentation is simpler (ugh, saxophones), and Simon Le Bon sounds sexy, as opposed to whiny. Next up: Tears for Fears and OMD!

I also tried listening to Cibo Matto's Stereo*Type A, but ended up shutting it off after 4 or so songs. I'll give it another go, but those first tracks simply lacked the playfulness and otherworldly quality of Viva! La Woman. Somewhere along the line, it seems they contracted a bad case of the backing bands and the late-90s New Yorks.

I did, and I like it. It's probably not as great as the Gnarls Barkley stuff, but it's good.

I have no clue why, because I know it's a good album, but the way I hear that album, it feels like a better type of pop. I just can't get into it.

However, I can get into Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor!. It's just great thinking music.

I like them both! But I'll never be able to go to Coney Island without wanting to slash my wrists.

Pretty solid song overall, but the end? I could just loop that part and listen to it all day. I'm really excited for the new album.

Coney Island was the playground of the world! I don't know really what the anecdote tries to do besides make you feel a sense of loss, but it does it really well. I like "Sleep" a lot. And I didn't know that other people here actually KNEW OF Joanna Newsom! I actually enjoy the intensity of her voice. I really only have heard the album with "Monkey and the Bear" or whatever the name of that song is, though. I probably should look into her more.

Bernard Sumner is a hilarious lyricist, but I still catch myself singing along to half of New Order's tracks. Hold on! It's never enough! It's never enough...Until your heart stops beating!

Meanwhile, Vitalic does absolutely amazing things with synthesizers. He's like a more virtuosic Justice, taking ideas that would have been cheesy (Polkamatic) with other artists, or perhaps gone nowhere (La Rock 01), and runs with them. I can't listen to Terminator Benelux, though, without thinking of The Dagger of Kamui's soundtrack.

I love Joanna Newsom's voice, I really don't get why so many people say it's terrible. The album you're referring to is Ys, and it is one of the few albums I can listen to on repeat all day and never want to listen to anything else.

I can understand where they're coming from. It's the nasal type of voice. It can be a little overwhelming at times, but I find it very stylistically nice.

And yeah, it's Ys. I really enjoy that album as well.

aaaaaand I think I'm going to stop my Chicago collection at 7. 6 and 7 just barely do it for me, and the last few Kath era releases have too many wishy washy reviews.

Chicago Transit Authority ends at album IV. I don't want to hear a goddamn word about the next 25 of 'em.

Girl Talk's new album, All Day, doesn't seem to be as party-ready as Feed the Animals was, but I'm still enjoying listening to it.

This works for many, many reasons. I personally have to include the fifth, but IV just makes for a clean break.

The new Faun Fables album, Light of a Vaster Dark, is out. It is really great. As good as Family Album (which I tend to think is their best), maybe even better, too soon to say. For the most part it continues the mood and tone set by the EP they released last year, A Table Forgotten. Dawn McCarthy's voice is as beautiful and powerful as ever, although I do wish there were some songs where Nils Frykdahl did the lead vocals (as were to be found on both A Transit Rider and Family Album).

My friend Meredith plays violin on this album and as always her playing is a joy to hear.

Anyways highly recommended for fans of folk/avant-folk/freak-folk/indie-folk/whatever. Their label, Drag City, is selling it in a variety of media and formats; CD, LP, mp3 and FLAC. Here.

I'm diggin it so far, but I have no prior Girl Talk experience.

In a similar theme, go check out Super Mash Bros. Fuck Bitches, Get Euros is a pretty great album, and I just dled All About the Scrillions, but I predict it will be pretty great as well.

I liked it, but I think Feed the Animals is better. I'll have to give it some time to grow on me and compare it again later.

But otherwise, I've been listening to a lot of System of a Down lately, and Mesmerize and Hypnotize are both a lot better than I remember them being, although Hypnotize kinda drags towards the middle-end.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy receives the highest rating I can bestow on a hip-hop/rap album: Zero Skits.

I thought I had exhausted Demon Days years ago, but tonight was the perfect night for a refresher. Now I'm torn on whether I prefer it or Plastic Beach.

Also, The xx never did anything for me, but Albarn and Co.'s cover of Crystalized is pretty choice. And what's the consensus on Doncomatic? It's not often that the Gorillaz pick up talent as fresh as Daley, right?

Have you listened to D-Sides? It's pretty interesting to listen to once you've fully digested Demon Days and Plastic Beach. It's very Demon Days-ish (well, a lot of the tracks are DD remixes or whatever) but it has some decent stuff on there. "We Are Happy Landfill" is very much in the spirit of Plastic Beach and wouldn't have fit at all on Demon Days.

D-Sides was a huge disappointment. The only must-have song is Hong Kong which you could already get in a slightly better version.
