Don't worry, just import the light novel adaptation.

I've historically been kinda down on Final Fantasy games post-IX, but I've relinquished that attitude. I've also been super curious about XV, but I have no way to play it and I probably won't unless it somehow gets a Switch port (not the mobile version). So I started watching a LP series.

Wow! This game is gorgeous!

I chose a Japanese LP, so I haven't been able to glean every plot detail, but I really like the road trip vibe and the half-ruined retro future 1950s aesthetic. Driving through the rain while glowing airships fly over head. Your party member twisting around to talk to the guys in the back seat about somewhere he wants to stop in the middle of the night. The absurdly well-rendered food items. It's all just a pleasure to experience.

I guess I should say that I've experienced precisely zero AAA-level modern JRPGs other than this, so whatever might feel tired to other people feels completely new to me.

Nah, XV's pretty spectacular. There's really nothing else quite like it.

Also I just got a platinum trophy for this game the most appropriate way: by playing the pinball minigame I never touched in one of the diners.

It's got atmosphere in spades but oof, that story post-Altissia.

I'm still pretty disappointed by Justice Monsters Five. What could've been a pretty cool minigame ended up being a tedious, repetitive slog. The main challenge in getting special items from the game isn't the difficulty, it's not getting bored to death.

Oh yeah, there's a reason "play Justice Monsters Five for the first time" was the last trophy I got on this account.

I've now seen the alternate ending to Ignis's DLC.

I'm really conflicted, because the alternate ending pulls soooooooooooooo many punches, but it also calls bullshit on chosen one narratives and the elite-class-as-ordained-by-higher-power perspective. It kind of wrecks the point of Noctis's arc in a really awkward way. Ignis takes on Noctis's responsibility and has to die, but then Noctis is like "no its my responsibility" and the Crystal gives them both a cookie (by which I mean doesn't kill them).

So it "fixes" problematic elements of the original narrative but in a really slapdash way, to the point that I'd rather it didn't exist.

Anyway the thing that actually matters about FF15 is Noctis's life and the people and things he held as important to him, and him making his peace with the end of a life well-lived alongside the people he loves. The rest of the game is just an excuse to prop up all the sight-seeing, fishing, eating, and camping.

Here's another thing, about FFXV Comrades this time: it's dope. Its weapon upgrade system is kind of incredible, and the nonlinear way you unlock new resources and quests is a very cool meta layer for a MonHun/PSO-like. If we see a spinoff, stand-alone Comrades game with or without FFXV's setting, I'd be 100% down. Also magic works a lot more like I wanted it to work in FFXV's singleplayer campaign, even though I warmed up to the "nah, fuck this entire encounter" grenades.

I'm gonna talk about the themes and stuff of Comrades as it relates to the main game, but to do so can't be done without MASSIVE spoilers, so:
Seeing the world through someone else's perspective, and from within a collective community that has room for average human bodies positioned as heroic is valuable. Especially in a setting where someone is the Chosen True King, Ordained by the Gods to Save Humanity from Pollution with His Powerful Magic. And though not ideal, it allows players to insert whatever kind of representation they wanted from FFXV into a canon role. I tend to be of the opinion "fuck the canon, your enjoyment is more important," but that's not quite the same.

Also it's pretty cool to have gotten to see this setting in pre-, mid-, and post-apocalyptic states. Seeing Lestallum barricaded with junk and wrecked to shit by constant daemon assault is a lot more effective for me than seeing a location in, say, Fallout 3, because I personally know what Lestallum used to be like.

In hindsight, this is my biggest problem with FFXV proper, too. Chapter 10 is an emotional wreck, and the game magically solves it at the end by saying, "Not only does my disability no longer affect me in any meaningful way, but I also learned a new thing!" And just like that, you don't have to bother yourself with it.

If I could rewrite the game, Ignis would leave the party at that point. He'd show back up for the final campfire, and he'd be back when you do the Umbra thing, but that's it.

did ffxv ever allow players to use their comrades character in the main game, or did that end up being cancelled

You can replace Noctis with your avatar, but his voice stays the same (for obvious reasons).

Recently played the Final Fantasy XIV. Not spectacular, but it's certainly better than the Terra Wars quest was, and has much nicer rewards for participating (new outfits and a new summon). And the use of Final Fantasy XIV assets allows for a better final boss than the evil palette swap Sarah clone fight.

Probably not gonna grind Garuda for new weapons, but the experience felt like far less of a waste of a half hour than the Terra wars collab did. Because I can dress Noct like a Mi'qote now.

Oh yeah, I never shared the FF15 spoilercast episode of The Podcast We Did. We bitch a lot about the Expanded Universe parts of it while gushing about how much we loved the core game
