Default The Final Battle: Waffles vs. Pancakes

I know we had a pancake thread before, but I looked to see if we had a thread like this and I couldn't find it. I tried to talk some sense into everyone, but that didn't really go anywhere. This is it. Waffles or pancakes. Which is better?

Obviously the correct answer is waffles. Crunchy, delicious, awesome: waffles. Pancakes are blobs of fat that look like blobs of fat and taste like blobs of fat (with syrup). They're disgusting, and you should feel bad for liking them and you may also be a rapist.

So yeah. A vote for waffles is a vote for not raping people. Make the right decision.

Also, results will be public. That way, if you're a horrible delinquent that likes pancakes, we will know who you are.

Pancakes unless there's fruit involved with the waffles. So both? You didn't give me that option.

French Toast is it's own (awesome) thing. But waffles and pancakes are brothers that fight all the time. They're like that guy in that anime that has a rival that's of equal skill and things don't get resolved until the finale. So it's time to settle this.

I tell you what, nothing works up an appetite for some fluffy, buttery pancakes like a little rape.

Strangely, the reverse also holds true.

I'm a waffle man but I don't like those big fluffy ones that don't crunch. This bed and breakfast I take the old lady to serves that kind and it's like, why bother? You might as well serve pancakes. I need some crunch.

i'm torn. you can put together a really good pancake batter in less than five minutes. Whereas the best waffle batter is ideally yeast-risen and is thus less amenable to impromptu waffle times. As a result, we have a roughly 4:1 pancake:waffle ratio for breakfasts in our house - not that I make either all that often.

Really? I've always preferred the ones that use egg whites. Which gives a nice stiff crispness.
Its still a hell of an ordeal next to some pancakes.
And Pancake batter is easier to mess around with, because its not going in a terrifying grid of heat and sizzle.

Also where do Crepes fall? Same basic ingredients as Pancakes and Waffles, but this time FLATTER?

I love both, but when push comes to shove, I guess I have to side with waffles. I suspect that at least part of that is due to almost always being disappointed when I get waffles, because they don't crunch. Balrog is spot on on this. That said, if you had said "blueberry pancakes", then I'd have gone that direction, but only if it was actual blueberries inside the pancakes none of this "blueberry topping" or "berry compote" bullshit.

Waffles seem like a special sort of breakfast that you would want to break out the good dishes to serve them on. Pancakes are good whenevs.

They fulfill different breakfast desires, but I guess waffles edges it out on novelty factor. Especially Belgian waffles. Mmm.

I love waffles. It drives me crazy that at restaurants, they have a million different pancake meals that come with a huge stack of pancakes as well as various side items for, say, $10-15, but a single, not-very-large waffle costs about $8-12 on its own and doesn't come with anything. Fortunately (and perhaps as a result of this), I don't eat breakfast at restaurants, unless I'm being treated to the meal.

Man what

Pancakes and waffles are made from the same sorts of things but if you're going to use that broad a definition you might as well include muffins and cakes and pretty much any flour-based confection ever and also most breads.

And you know what else is made from the flour and yeast and eggs and spices that make waffles?

French toast. Pain Perdu. Poor Knights of Windsor. Which beats out both pancakes and waffles any day.

waffles > pancakes tho

Yeah, but like I said, in my mind, the two are archrivals. Pancakes and waffles are by far the most common breakfast treat items you see in America. And typically places that offer one will offer the other. People tend to have a preference as well. So then there's this thread.

I mean, shit, if we were going to have an Ultimate Breakfast Showdown, everyone knows omelettes would win anyway. Everyone knows that.

I don't know how anybody can say no to that.

Besides, nobody eats chicken and pancakes, that just sounds gross.

In the trash, where they belong. You dirty Frenchman. Actually, crepes are pretty good.

Waffles all the way. I don't see how this is an argument.

I'm throwing my lot in with waffles. I like to have a little crispiness.

And now a Follow-Up Question!

Syrup: Yes or No?

I don't know how there can even be a contest. Pancakes only work as a stack, which already makes them easy to gorge on before you get any tasty benefits. They're also flabby and soft, and gets worse if you even try to let them soak in honey to give them any taste at all. Waffles, OTOH, are good even if you have just the one, they have their own little integrated "pockets" for the honey to collect without soaking the entire thing, and they're hard and crunchy enough to eat with your fingers if you want to. They're scientifically and architecturally engineered to be superior to the plain, gravity-bound pancake in every way.

Which one goes great with Fried Chicken? Also, which one has little cavities that soak up syrup and peanut butter?

No contest.

I do love me a good pancake, but it doesn't hold against a truly good waffle straight from an iron.

For what it's worth, waffles are a nightmare from a foodservice standpoint though. Think about it: You run a breakfast joint, and you get slammed with a dozen orders for waffles all at once. How many waffles can you make on your iron? One, maybe two if you get one of those fancy ones that rotate and can do two. And you've got two irons, one of which is on the fritz, and each requiring recovery time after each use.

Pancakes are only limited by griddle space, and if push really came to shove, you can bust out some pans or stovetop griddles to crank out even more.
