There's also the thematic perspective: the scope of the Empire's arrogance expands to encompass not only a belief in their technological supremacy (appropriate for the recent memory of the Vietnam War) but also in their psychological or ideological domination. The Imperial machine includes more than just hardware, and the idea that the hardware is flawed is as inconceivable to them as the idea that their subjugation is flawed.

TARKIN: The regional governors now have direct control over territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.

TAGGE: And what of the Rebellion? If the Rebels have obtained a complete technical readout of this station, it is possible, however unlikely, that they might find a weakness and exploit it.

VADER: The plans you refer to will soon be back in our hands.

MOTTI: Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained. This station is now the ultimate power in the universe. I suggest we use it!

Yep, only Tagge hasn't drunk the Kool-Aid. Vader's main objection is that he's far scarier than the battle station, not that the plans might prove it to be crap.

One of the neat things about the Vader comic series is that, post-Yavin, Tagge's in a VERY favorable position with the Emperor and pushes Vader around a bit.

The Keiron Gillan comics are just amazing. They manage to square the circle and write a Vader who feels like Vader to the point I could mentally hear his voice saying his lines, but is also recognisably Anakin Skywalker.

I got to see A New Hope with the soundtrack played by a live orchestra. I can't recommend it strongly enough, the trench run in particular was unbelievably intense live.

Oh man, I saw this for Jurassic Park which was pretty great, but seeing Star Wars like this would be fucking amazing.

Funnily enough on the way home my brother and I were talking about other films that should get the treatment and Jurassic Park and ET both got mentioned. If you get the chance, definitely do it, it's an amazing experience. I'm really hoping they do Empire Strikes Back next, for my money that's the best soundtrack in the entire saga.

Oh hey look, why this appears to be a carefully-detailed labor of love in the style of Super Star Wars, which was my jam, why I'll just click in here and

Yeah, I like that Topher Grace keeps coming back to editing Star Wars stuff.

A new argument that I just saw: Solo is actually a great movie, but people want to hate it because The Last Jedi was so bad. It's hard to believe the knots some people twist themselves into.

Solo is superfluous and fun, an unnecessary but good time.

The Last Jedi is incredible and in my top three SW films. That is all.

I thought The Last Jedi was fine, but to me its value as a movie is far outweighed by its utility as a device for harvesting shitty manbaby tears. Watching MRA types wail and screech about how women being allowed to do things has RUINED STAR WARS FOREVER is like catnip to me.

I haven't seen Solo and have no plans to.

Iím about where V is at. I didnít see the movie until a few months ago and after all the hype I was underwhelmed in both directions. It was good, but I wasnít wowed. I appreciated how it subverted expectations, but it suffered from the same problems that a lot of tentpoll action films do these days: weak pacing and a bloated unfocused plot. Still, a lot of the relationships go to interesting places and Iím really interested in the next film.

I haven't seen Solo and have no plans to.

All of these takes are fine. The only thing Iím bothered by is the attempt to create a narrative that The Last Jedi or Rey destroyed Star Wars, and the lengths people go to try to knock down any contrary opinion. Itís bizarre.

VAERAN SPEAKS FOR THE OCTOS!

Except that I also really liked Last Jedi, and rank it near the top of the series.

God that sounds so stupid write out loud. Not even in the worst airport novels would that plot point fly.

It's no accident that nazis post videos about Star Wars.

Reactionary ideology, both seeded propaganda and the sincere kind, spreads through pop art critiques on youtube because it meets little resistance there. Fascist rhetoric doesn't hold up when it's actually challenged, so it seeks out venues where it won't be challenged. Classically, that means backing it up with physical violence, but it also tends to accumulate in places where nobody who knows better is listening.

Like, oh, it's just a movie, or a video game, or whatever - it's geek pop culture, shallow as a puddle, disposable, popcorn - so the concept of rigorous criticism being applied to it is laughable. Even the suggestion that it can support serious thought and relate to important ideas is kind of ridiculous, inviting self-parody to release the tension. It doesn't matter how flawed someone's analysis of a popcorn blockbuster is, right?

In this way "lowbrow" art, neglected by "highbrow" critics, who think it's irrelevant, is at risk of having its mass consensus interpretation (often a flagrantly inaccurate one) determined by fascists, who know it isn't.

For more information, refer to Kirk Drift.

Solo is a solid "pretty good" and no more

TLJ might be my favorite, both on its own merits and in how it related to the rest

The Last Jedi is top three for me. Return of the Jedi will always be my favourite, although I know it's not the best.

Solo is fun but not necessary. Not everything in a popular film needs to be explained. We'll have a film about where the Falcon got its radar dish from at this rate.
