Yesterday on my way to the drugstoreI witnessed a seagull swallowing a pigeon whole in the middle of the street. I assume the pigeon was dead before the swallowing began.

Spoilered for size!

I didn't know seagulls could do that. Should I barrel the windows in case they decide my cat looks tasty?

Jesus. I knew Pelicans could do that, which at least kind of makes sense with their huge beaks and such, but I've never heard of that. Seagulls are monsters.

Have you ever seen what herons do to baby ducks? There's a good chance the pigeon being eaten by the gull was definitly not dead.

Uh, maybe I shouldn't have posted those pictures. Right now there's a huge flock of seagulls circling around my backyard making a lot of noise. Now, maaaaybe the guy who rents a freezing unit for his fish stand a block away just left the door open or something, but....

What is the punishment in the seagull mafia for snitching? =/

"Snitches get stitches" is pretty universal, I'd imagine.

Also, thinking back, I've read about deer eating birds' feet and heads (to get some vitamin or mineral in the beaks and feet, apparently), but this is some next-level stuff.

Not going to go looking for it since I'm on mobile right now, but a little while back deer were caught on camera eating human remains. It might have been posted in this thread already?

Was it in this thread that someone posted "there's no such thing as an obligate herbivore"? I think about that phrase a lot.

The linked article suggests it may have been about 190mm long, which corresponds roughly to 7.5", which isn't even the biggest centipede I've seen. But those pictures...

So does that mean the snake tried to eat the centipede and the centipede ate the snake from inside?

the authors of that paper seemed to believe the snake successfully ate the centipede; I wasn't clear on whether the snake was dead when they dissected it or not.

Snakes occasionally bite off more than they can chew, and it usually ends badly for them when they do. I've forgotten where I read it, but I saw a story where a snake managed to swallow an alligator at one point, and later died from it. The story indicated this wasn't an isolated incident. What apparently happens is that although the snake can technically .ake its prey fit, it' really just too much to digest. I also imagine having an entire goddamned alligator lodged in one's digestive tract makes it hard to get around.

When I was a kid I had a pet lizard that died after trying to eat too big a grasshopper.

Koalas: Proof positive against creationists' convictions that evolution must be moving all creation toward smarter, stronger forms, but is in fact a largely accidental process that selects for whatever works, even when that includes astounding stupidity.
