Yeah, I forget exactly when it was, but there was a point while I was working for them where they had to cut their freelance rates and lay off a lot of their internal editorial staff. You get what you pay for.

Reminds me that Berserk (whose plot is actually starting to move after years on The Boat)'s next big event is sending the teenage witch and her mentally fragile apprentice deep into Casca's shattered mind to try and repair it. The first step is getting to relive what shattered her mind in the first place, which just had me shake my head and facepalm when I read it.

Every time the subject of Endo comes up again I'm just reminded that I want my last four volumes of Eden, God-dammit. ;_;

It's highly entertaining, indefensibly repugnant trash.

I love it, but hoo boy.

I can't help but think it's weird that "trash" has become a part of the understood language for discussing Japan comicbooks.

I think this would be the case with popular media from most places. It's just that we haven't built an entire subculture here in America around consuming the Z-grade junk-food entertainment of, say, Croatia.

Yeah I mean, to be fair, there are quite a few American comicbooks that can be classified as trash too.

No I mean

Trash in this context has meaning. Meaning beyond "something that should be thrown away".

Like

If I were to say some book I got from the library I was reading was "trash", that would mean I don't like it and I'm not gonna finish it and I'm gonna return it before it's due date.

But in this ongoing discussion trash does not mean something that should be disposed of! Here it's the thing many of you want more of! When something in this thread is described as "Trash" I know without thinking that they're not saying I fuckin hated it, but I fuckin LOVED it!

That's WEIRD!

But only when you stop and think about it way too hard and honestly in the 90s "BAD" meant "cool/good" for awhile so whatevs.

Pauline Kael famously said of the movies that since they "are so rarely great art, if we cannot appreciate great trash, we have very little reason to be interested in them." I think that's kind of the same usage?

Murcielago in particular is kind of the manga equivalent of a Tarantino film - it revels in gore, sex and shock value, has an irredeemable serial killer for a protagonist and even worse villains, and touches on some really uncomfortable things, but it's got a lot of style, isn't afraid to go for some really dark or inappropriate humour, and likes to throw together unusual combinations of characters and scenarios.

Come on, of course you can associate manga with trash.

See? There's a manga right there doing it.

I mean, yeah, murcielago is exploitation trash, but it is also oddly entertaining.

It does link lesbianism to sociopathy/mental illness though, so that's fun.

I wish Ryuta Amazume could come up with a premise for a strip that was, I dunno, maybe 25-30 percent less creepy than his usual average, because he's a fuckin good artist, but Nana and Kaoru is probably his least creepy serial, and the title pages there are just, like, no, man. No.

I thought "trash" in this context referred chiefly to oneself as a consumer of the manga, that is also, secondarily, called trash.

Trash has existed since before the first penny dreadful, and I feel like people who use terms like trash are consciously or unconsciously trying to avoid falling into the trap for example of ranting and raving about how deep Evangelion is, maaaaan.

Anyone with an interest art history can tell you that baseline disposable pop culture bullshit is what forms the foundations for high art later on down the line. Trash is the raw form of what will later be interpreted and edited by people who might know their craft better but are still more removed from understanding the meaning of their own work.

One of the more recent trends in award bait movies is this whole "doomed gay romance" thing. That story archetype can be traced back pretty directly to mid-twentieth century lesbian pulp novels that were largely written as escapism by and for lesbian and bi women, but used tragic endings as a loophole to get around that whole "promoting homosexuality" thing. The modern high art version is essentially the same story being told by straight people who don't understand why people liked the original, only that this is how the story is supposed to go. It's a pattern as old as art itself.

and that's why evangelion isn't deep, but will be in another twenty years or so

(not that a modern artsy version of a thing is necessarily bad. Guillermo Del Toro comes to mind as an immediate example of someone who loves lowbrow work and is great at elevating it to highbrow specifically because he loves it)

teg, have you watched The Handmaiden? I think you'll like it.

About manga: i'm currently reading Dr. Slump and damn, this is a joy to read. This is the best trash!!! I mean it has a lot of poop jokes.

(Also read Kingyo Used Books, but that's unremarkable, i think.)

What the hell is Iria doing in Macross?

There's a lot of angles from which to appreciate Franken Fran, so I feel it very important to establish whether we're talking like, the cover illustrations, or like the story with the city of super intelligent cockroaches with superheroes all over?

The character with the rocket boots is a dude. Also, hmm, Mikimoto didn't do the character designs for Iria, but they definitely have some stylistic overlap.

I wish we could get a Mac7 Trash pub in English, but lol, Macross rights.

Speaking of Mikimoto stuff in English, his Gundam book, Ecole du Ciel, kind of fell off the face of the Earth, didn't it?

Just finished the final volume of Franken Fran. I love that the final chapter is a big party with every single named character, including the cockroaches. Every manga should end like that.

Also the final bonus chapter is an interview with Fran, Veronica, and Gavril about what they think of their own manga, framed as the whole thing being a documentary about them. So you get stuff like Gavril pointing out plot inconsistencies or everyone teasing Veronica for clearly having a crush on Fran the whole time.

Jiro Taniguchi passed away. Damn. May he rest in peace.

I think his work is my platonic ideal of comics.

^A friend recently recommended A Distant Neighborhood to me, sounds like I should do just that.

Question to those familiar with re-printing format: am I correct to assume that when a manga is re-published in kanzenban format, it wouldn't be re-published in bunkoban form (*in other words, are the two mutually exclusive)?
