I picked Forces up based on the recommendations in this thread, and it's pretty good barring the Classic Sonic levels. Maybe it's because my laptop can barely run the game, but Classic Sonic's momentum feels really off and the precision platforming just isn't coming together for me, particularly in the casino-themed levels.

The levels that require practically no precision, though -- especially the Rookie's -- are solid. I should've known that "Sonic game plus grappling hook" would be a killer combination.

[edit: Turning down the settings really did help the control issues. I'd be prepared to swear before a judge and God Himself that the midair control over your character is somehow tied to the framerate.]

I am glad people are enjoying this game!

I was half afraid that this thread would be full of posts that went "BEAT SAID THIS GAME WAS GOOD BUT WE HAVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS HE DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE AND WE WASTED 40 BUCKS BECAUSE OF HIM" and I'd be like "OHH NOOOOOOO".

But that didn't happen!

Yet.

Anyway, I never have to play it again, 'cause I got all the things from it.
I dunno, the third stage of Episode Shadow gets pretty bad.

I'm loving it dude. I still think it's definitely the best 3D Sonic.

Nope! No Crush 40. Instead: Hoobastank.
Well, the lead singer of Hoobastank.

I thought I replied to this earlier, but I guess I must have closed the tab or something? Sorry!

Finished the story mode today. I can't imagine replaying every level to get all the red rings and S-rankings and suchlike, but I can see myself going back and redoing a few favorites just for the heck of it.

And the Shadow DLC may have been no great shakes, but it had some pretty sweet remixes of old Sonic Adventure 2 tracks, so I'm not sad I played it.

Hoobastank being involved automatically makes it the worst Sonic game

Dammit folks quit trying to tempt me into buying this thing. I won't do it. I won't!

...that said what's the level breakdown in terms of classic/modern/donotsteal.

It's about equal, with a few modern + donotsteals thrown in.

Okay, okay, let me count the things. The breakdown is: ten Modern Sonic levels, eight Avatar levels, eight Classic Sonic levels, and four Modern Sonic/Avatar teamup levels. The secret stages are an even split of three Modern Sonic stages and three Avatar stages.

I have a question for Sonic fans - do you think there's anything in this or any 3D Sonic game that elevates it above the good 2D Sonics like Mania, or at least something they offer that's completely distinct from classic Sonic? It seems like the 3D Sonics at their best are kind of an almost-as-good version of the classic Sonic platforming plus a lot of auto-running, or am I wrong and there's really something there? What would the ideal 3D Sonic game be? I'm curious what fans think, since I'm kind of an outsider to the series at least for the 3D games (though watching lets plays of them is frequently very good).

I've always found discovering new routes and running time trials more fun in the 3D Sonic games. Particularly in Generations.

It depends. A lot of the obvious mechanical throughlines on the 2D series tend not to exist in the 3D ones, since the 3D games tend to be a lot more experimental overall.

For me, there are a few things that Sonic in 3D has that a lot of other 3D platformers don't have:

1. Being able to easily and readily exploit momentum and speed to launch yourself into all sorts of crazy corners of the map to find skips and shortcuts. SA1 was huge with this, due to the way the jump worked: you could spin dash up a ramp into a wicked high jump and use that to get past lots of parts of stages focused on vertical ascent. While from SA2 on the levels tended to get more tubelike and linear to prevent this from happening (as well as major nerfs to moves like the spin dash in that game specifically) it's still possible and there have been some absurd skips people better at that sort of thing than I have managed to pull off.

2. A strong sense of speed that at times can be so overwhelming, even the game itself has difficulty holding up to the rigor. People understandably don't like Sonic Heroes very much, and it's certainly quite a broken game, but the main reason I've sunk so much time into it is that it has that sense of speed and the brokenness play together to make the game thrilling in a way the more tightly scripted games don't.

3. Style points. I'm a sucker for the ranking systems that Adventure 2 brought about. The base game is usually accessible enough (for me at least) to want to keep pushing up against its limits for speed, points, etc. Similarly for achievements, especially if they're not too grindy.

4. I can be a sucker for corny melodrama at times.

5. In general I will always have a soft spot for weird and experimental games, and Sonic's odd and inconsistent approaches to 3D. Yes, even Lost World, with all the ways its length was padded out by making most challenges instant-kill on failure.

6. The music and presentation are usually always quite top-notch, and I've become a big fan of that sort of drum-and-bass style that the games have taken on over the years. Just making the levels fun to experience goes a decent way to making me interested in giving them a fair shake. Sonic's style is usually quite distinct from most other platform games, even if I'm tired of the GHZ checkerboard at this point.

Note that Mario Odyssey does a very good job of aligning itself with a lot of this criteria. It is probably my favorite Sonic game.

Spectacle.

And that's not a minor or frivolous thing; when it comes to capturing the thrill of high speed, a sense of depth adds so much intensity and scope to the whole thing that it really does elevate it to a whole other level, which for a series like Sonic, is a big deal! And as a series, it's always had an affinity for setpiece moments...hell, even the humble li'l Game Gear games went for 'em.

They're also a lot twitchier than the 2D games, which I like.

I don't know if I'd say all that elevates it above the 2D stuff, though. They're practically separate series at this point.

Playing 2D Sonic fast is about memorizing opportunities in a stage. Playing 3D Sonic fast is about identifying opportunities in a stage. If you are good enough, you can play a 3D Sonic stage relatively fast your first time through. Further playthroughs will be faster, but since you can, you know, see what's ahead of you, you have much more time to process and plan a reaction. To me, 2D Sonic is most fun to play slow so I can explore, and 3D Sonic is most fun to play as fast as possible.

Spectacle is the reason why I've always hoped someone* would find a way to make Sonic inarguably great in polygons. Full 3D allows for a layer of depth that 2D just can't pull off. It's why a game where you're small (Pikmin, Chibi-Robo) is an impressive sight to see in 3D but not so much so in 2D.

* I think former rival Nintendo's in the best position to make a really great 3D Sonic, if Nintendo wanted to and Sega would let them.

You mean the Sonic Generations version of Rooftop Run, right? The Sonic Unleashed equivalent, while still an awesome spectacle itself, was packed with cheap bullshit death traps that bring the whole thing down.

The Unleashed version has it's problems, but I don't like all of the changes in Generations. Platforming up and around the side of the clock tower is a good idea; Unleashed's implementation needs a fix but Generations just threw the whole thing out. I also thought the music arrangement was better in Unleashed.

I maintain they just did, the only thing is that they starred Mario in it

Perfectly understandable. Unleashed did have some awesome set pieces, it just needed more polish and a better controlling Sonic.

I feel like 3D Sonic at its best is like a roller coaster ride you can control.

Speaking of Mario, I feel like I enjoy Sonic Forces the same way I enjoy the Super Mario Bros. movie. I know it's not good on some sort of fundamental level, but it still manages to do stuff I like and just have fun with.
