There haven't even been a lot of Aquaman Elseworlds, have there? You'd think that'd be a natural, but given that the only ones outside of the big three I can think of were starring Flash, I suppose not.

(Hm, what was the Aquaman Elseworlds annual? Must research....)

I'm still trying to figure out if Peter Milligan's New 52 Red Lanterns was a gag or not. He wrote a year or two of that comic and I'm pretty sure they never left their home planet as they talked about all the revenge they were gonna get on the Green Lanterns and how much pain they were in.

Aquaman should just be a villain. A super-strong, raging dick terrorist like Namor used to be. His kingdom's full of trash and gradually being destroyed by normal human activity on land. What reason does he have to help humanity?

But that is just literally making him Namor.

Aquaman basically turned into Namor in Kingdom come, except that he actually managed to keep a woman around.

(Waid and David apparently hooked up Arthur with Dolphin independently of each other, which I always thought was funny.)

That's basically the plot of Flashpoint, ya?

I thought we agreed to never speak of Flashpoint again.

(Yes, I know that DC themselves broke that rule two months ago.)

Nothing will ever top that shot of the evolved Mr. Mind from the last page of issue #51 of 52. I will never ever ever ever ever ever be able to get that nightmarish thing our of my mind.

How could anyone at DC even dare to think they could improve on Mr. Mind?

Some characters are just perfect from inception

I'll grant them the concept was solid. Mr Mind is a caterpillar, so having him metamorphose into some sort of butterfly is a decent thought.

Good idea, poor execution.

(although Mr Buttermind has always struck me more as a Grant Morrison creation - dude also has his misses)

There seem to have been precious few times where writers looked back at all the cartoonish and goofy stuff in DC's history and said "this is already good, now let's make it better," instead of "that's lame, let's make it COOL."

One reason why Brave & the Bold is one of the truest expressions of the DC universe for me.

Batman sees his pal is sad and cheers him up by taking him on a space adventure.

That's the difference between a friend and a True Friend

I loved the issue that the bug reveal set up (52's finale, which was tremendous fun), it just was so. goddamn. CREEPY.

It took me a minute to realize this was legit silver age art and not from the 2010s. The people who decided this is worse than whatever the fuck went on in Identity Crisis should be walled up in an ancient tomb.

There's so much to love of that panel. There's the obvious child-like joy of not only seeing an octopus wield a bow, but four bows, and there's also the fact that Aquaman felt it necessary to teach his pet octopus how to fire a bow years ago in anticipation of exactly this moment.

I love how many Silver Age problems are solved by "good thing I already had the solution to this exact problem."

To be fair, that's basically also the description for most Batman stories post-Morrison-JLA.

Well, at least until partway through the second season, when someone clearly Notices It's A Success and it goes from charming vignettes about Batman and his buds to Animating The Greatest (*) DC Stories Ever Told. (*) - Disclaimer stories may not be great or even good but they're the schlock DC returns to over and over and over and over again.

I'd argue that Emperor Joker is the kind of schlock DC should return to more often.

Not that EJ was that great, but its heart was in the right place.

I guess? But they were told through the sincere voice of the B&TB cartoon, so I suppose I had no problem with this.

What I mean is, the writers weren't saying "we should retell this DC story but wouldn't it be cool if it had more amputations"

And if we take it at face value that the octopus is almost as good a shot as Green Arrow but he can fire four times as fast, then, well, we have a new candidate for the Justice League.

I'm more interested in knowing how those burglars knew Topo was almost as good as Green Arrow.

(also, what does "almost" means in this context? The octopus pinned then to the wall, what would GA do? And you don't need to be more accurate when you aim to the face with a boxing glove arrow)

Positronic Bain - almost four decades of overthinking comics!

I believe that there have actually been about 20 or 30 of the same generic unnamed criminals running around, getting caught by superheroes.

I also like that Aquaman taught an octopus to use a weapon that doesn't work underwater.

Hooo boy someone apparently forgot to tell Neil Gaiman that DC was going to be borrowing some aspects of Sandman for a new character (called "Doctor Endless" so it's not like they were being subtle with it) and it predictably did not end well.

That's a genuine "reset the clock" moment.

I know he was upset when another writer used Death in a story without asking him, but was he upset when Dream showed up to help the JLA fight Starro?
