Default DASH!

I've been thinking about it, and I think that perhaps the best video game mechanic is the dash, in terms of the amount of overall joy it has brought me in its various incarnations across games and genres (I'm including dodge rolls and the like as well).

I've been thinking about this because I've been playing Night in the Woods and got very distracted by Demontower, the game-within-a-game where you're a sword-wielding Palecat. You start out with 9 hp and 1 dash, and over the course of the game lose hp and gain extra dashes, so that by the end you die to any hit but can chain-dash to your heart's content.

But like - dash! Dodge! Chain-dash! So satisfying!

I love all sorts of dashes. I-frames are great, but having to actually dodge out of range of things is also great. Tell me about your favorite dodges and dashes!

The Sniper backwards roll in Risk of Rain is my favourite, hands-down. I especially love how you can use it as a forwards dash with some quick D-pad work.

Does a SLIDE! spark the joy of DASH!ing in your heart? Of course it does! Then it is a DASH!, and let no churlish atavist say otherwise!

YES. Like that thing where you can reverse your aerial momentum in SSB at the start of a special. So satisfying.

Sometimes it is! Like in Towerfall, (there's a game with some excellent dashing and dash-sliding and dash-slide-jumping) where you can dash up!

Whoa, an air dash is not a double-jump. Dashing can make double-jumps better if you keep your momentum in the air, though.

But when I see DASH in all caps, all I think of is Digouter's Adventure Story in Halcyon Days.

What about the upwards air-dash in MMX2?

The best dash in video games is hyper sonic in sonic 3 *points in the general direction of BEAT's new stream/LP*

- it's a dash!
- it's a double-jump!
- it's a screen-clearing attack!

Related, Copen's Bullet Dash in Gunvolt 2 is so great. Bounce off of walls! Bounce off of enemies (and lock on to shoot at them)! Bounce off of everything at super-speed!

A dash is fine, but a double-jump is sublime.

The quickhook mechanic in Flinthook functions sort of like a dash through the air and works pretty well.

This looks great! Definitely going to have to look into that one further.

Some nice things about DASH!ing are as follows: it's fast, it increases your freedom of movement, and (importantly) it encourages death-defying maneuvers by being most useful when you're dancing right around your enemies' hitboxes.

No one's mentioned Shinobi (PS2) yet. It's been years since I played it but it has a pretty satisfying kill-dash thing going on. IIRC you have to kill an enemy in one hit, which resets your air dash and lets you dash to another enemy. The idea was to chain kills together until the entire room was dead, at which point you sheath your sword and everything dies at the same time. You get a better score the more enemies die simultaneously. I'm forgetting the particulars of how to actually get the instant kill because it wasn't just a simple "hit them with a move."
