Played three games today Two Mays and a June. Lost, Won, Lost.

The last two games ended on literally the last turn before we ran out of player city cards. We were able to complete three objectives on the one and we're only about two turns away from completing them on the latter.

We've got good at controlling outbreaks and spreading but its taking too long or we're playing too cautious or something because we just don't seem to have enough time to get it all done.

Part of this problem might be because with the Colonel you've basically only got three people trying to cure diseases...

July/August spoiler question, just because I'm interested: Which character, if any, did you attach the Paramilitary Escort upgrade to?

Late July and early August wins! Late July was amusing: by the end of the first player's turn we had both cured one disease and completed our search objective. Soldier makes it look easy.
August was harder fought, with a nasty first-turn Epidemic; we hit 7 outbreaks before the win.

Soldier. This was great in August, and may even be enough reason for us to start rotating Dispatcher back in.

Won our second game in April. Every disease has at least one beneficial mutation and we've got a full suite of unfunded events with no scars. Basically we're screwed.

May, game 1: we lost to chain outbreaks in Asia just as we were about to cure the last disease and eradicate another. We tried Operations Expert, Colonel, Quarantine Specialist, and Dispatcher. I really did not pole like the Colonel. Our zombies are under control enough - at least now - that they're not worth the risk of killing.

August/September Spoilers

Soldier died in early August. Colonel died in late August. Quarantine Specialist was the traitor in our game so we lost her in early September. Almost no way to deal with the Faded in South America and Africa at this point... Damn, I was expecting a twist but not that one!

I believe it's possible to get through September without seeing that spoiler, be warned.

Spoiling the same, which we just played: I had been expecting the military base objective to disappear soon, but losing our Soldier as the traitor was depressing. Besides being the best Faded remover from Paramilitary Escort, literally no one else has ever contributed to a search in our campaign - being able to recover cards was just so good.
We got three good months out of it, at least, and the new "Hazmat Suit but keep it" equip options take some of the sting out of it.

You do seem to be in a pickle. Guessing you can use Virologist at least? And Operations Expert+Local Pressure is a decent quarantiner if you don't sabotage all the bases.

Man, just reading through all the spoilers and how people are reacting to the twists and turns makes me want to play through this all over again.

We've only got two games left max. Won early November. found the last item we needed to open box seven and unlocked vaccine labs I'm worried what December is going to throw at us I can imagine them being real cocks with the win goals and our board is a disaster of fallen cities and road blocked continents...

June/July: The summer months really feel like filler, huh? That said, since we rotated out Medic for Soldier (with more than a little reluctance), we're having to adjust still. We found the Virologist on the fifth turn of July. Not 100% clear on what good that does us just yet. June was outbreak-free (though we came very close to losing anyway), but we racked up a few in July.

June/July upgrades: We used the last of the positive mutations, added in unfunded Air Strike, made another base permanent, and then made the three free July roadblocks permanent. We still haven't ever used the roadblock action, but now we have Los Angeles pinned down. Good thing, too, since it outbroke near the end of July.

Won early October.

Needed a military base in Lima to have any hope of finishing the new search. Ops Expert is dead and the Lima card was too late to build with. Good luck next month!
We did take the upgrade that lets someone build with an adjacent city's card this time, so we'll see.

Game over man! Game over!

We won in the second game of December with three cards left in the player deck... Final score of 669. Not the best but also not even close to the worst.

Lost early June. We were two goddamn disease cubes away from winning when we got back to back epidemics. The ensuing chain outbreaks wiped us the fuck out. Part of the problem was that our quarantine specialist had to spend too much time helping to clean up the gigantic mess that was the Middle East, and the Eurozombies got out of control . Seriously - something like 75% of the initial card draw was black. It sucked.

October: This was an easy month, but we failed to find the immunologist. The timer's just too short! For our upgrade, we added two military bases, bringing us to five permanent bases. This freed up the Operations Expert role.

Early September: The deck was stacked against us to a ridiculous degree. We got our eighth outbreak before drawing our third Epidemic, which put a quick end to this attempt. Upgrades: We placed the sixth military base (making that objective autocomplete) and upgraded the Soldier to allow him to spend an action to trade a card for another card of the same color. This will make searching much faster.

Late September: The game softballed us this time, although we did get our first scar of the game when a city outbroke with someone in it. The Soldier was our scarred character, so he got the scar that makes it harder to discover cures. It's almost like cheating. We found the immunologist, but getting both the immunologist and the paranoid soldier was asking a bit too much. Sure enough, the upgrade we gave the Soldier was instrumental in finding the immunologist. We gave the Virologist the Veteran upgrade, since she was nearly useless without dog tags to get her places.

Three months to go!

Done!

Won late December with a couple turns left for everyone. Lots of Dispatcher+Pilot in order to give people cards for searching.

Final score 607. We found the scoring method a bit odd, both being surprised by the military-base goal, and that we would've done better intentionally losing once or twice to pick up search objectives; after the traitor Soldier that's pretty well what would've been required. Fun though!

I have another group of friends who own the game and haven't started yet, and offered to just watch as someone who knows the rules - as often as things changed, we screwed a bunch of (small) stuff up both ways. We'll see.

Man fuck June and July. We lost both June games and the our first July. July was especially rough - we popped eight Faded cities before the first epidemic and five from the entire rest of the board. Two epidemics later back-to-back chain zombie outbreaks killed us before our third pass round the board.

Yeah; it especially bit because we'd gone with the Colonel to try and avoid getting wiped out by zombie outbreaks - that lost us both June games, like, a turn from victory in each - and to set up a research station in Faded territory to try and find the Virologist. Thankfully he hadn't moved in to that area yet or he'd have died on the spot; three cities went from 3s to 5s in two turns.

Thankfully we've used a bunch of game-end upgrades to cordon off Faded territory with roadblocks; there's only a couple of ways they can spread out now...

We'd also had a bit of a strategy disagreement, as two of the group wanted us to spend a lot more time keeping the zombies under control, even taking scars to do so. I feel like that's a terrible idea, since the Colonel's the only one that can actually affect them beyond placing quarantine markers. So one bad outbreak and we've got no way to affect them at all. The last couple games, we'd been trying to end faster by having the Quarantine Specialist not remotely place Quarantine Markers, and I think that was our bigger problem.

February Question: C0Da was black, which is a hell of a web of difficulty.

We've finished April, no losses so far. For us, the game-breaking upgrades are Medic with treat adjacent, Dispatcher with Pilot (since you move people using the Dispatcher's upgrades, it means for two actions and one card you can move anyone anywhere. Our team is Medic/Dispatcher/Quarantine and so far we don't see any reason to swap out - the only really beautiful relationship is Coworker, and we've already got that in place between M/Q. We've upgraded both yellow and blue three times.

Apropos of nothing, the spoilers-hidden FAQ on BGG looks pretty great and was checked with designers. We were confused about a few things around start of November, and it was very helpful.

Just started playing this game it's some friends! Sounds like it will Elbe a monthly thing. We won three games to put us at April. Based on some non-spoiled reactions to spoiled content in this thread, I'm pretty scared!

Upgrades through March: increase hand size for Scientist, treat descent cities for medic, easier red disease treatment, triple research stations (Hong Kong, Paris, Khartom)

February Question: Black.

End of July / Virologist

We lost again to an unlucky Faded draw from the player deck that turned a safe region into a five-way chain outbreak literally a turn before we were about to win. But we found the Virologist. We totally cheesed it - used the soldier to create and then blow both binoculars in one turn to advance the search six, then finished it off.

I think it was mostly due to luck - he started with a drone escort - and having a large stock of unequipped equipment, but the soldier was pretty effective. We'll see if he stays that way!

August: we won

We found the Immunologist right away, judging it to be the easiest win option over seven Faded cities. It helped that our Soldier started with two Faded city cards and one was from a rioting city. I had to blow a anti-epidemic card to shut down the first epidemic of the game (Box 8 spoilers) . But so worth it.

The soldier is actually working out reality well for us. We've given him upgrades now for killing Faded when he leaves a city, crossing roadblocks, and he's a co-worker with our Generalist, so it's easy to take cards from him and work around his handicap
.

Finally got back to our campaign. Played March and April and won both by the skin of our teeth.

March: This game was pretty hilarious, rules-fuckup-wise, since it had been months since we had played. We won the game pretty easily, but when we went to the end-game unlocks, confusion erupted. I opened one of the panels as instructed, but it was COdA-403d, when we hadn't yet found 403c. I was worried that maybe we had missed something earlier, but checked everything and it seemed fine. Did a bunch of Googling, but it wasn't a help. Eventually, I realized that I had been an idiot and opened the wrong panel. COdA-403d isn't supposed to happen for a while.

HOWEVER, in my Googling I realized we had made an even bigger mistake: we had only played with the two optional objectives (Eradicate a disease and build military bases in all 6 regions), not the mandatory Cure 3 Diseases objective. Which meant that he hadn't yet won the game. Luckily, because of the confusion from opening the wrong panel, we hadn't reset the board or anything, so we just took up the game from where we left off, with 5 turns left to fulfill an objective we hadn't been planning for. Somehow, through very careful card manipulation, we managed to do it, but man, was it tense.

The hilarious thing is, if I hadn't made the one rules mistake, I never would have noticed the much bigger mistake. Good thing I read that card wrong.

April: As people have mentioned, things got intense. We went with our same crew (Medic, Quarantine Specialist, Dispatcher, Operations Expert) and managed just fine for a while, but then the Faded happened. Pretty soon, we were at 6 outbreaks and the entirety of Asia (Red was our COdA disease) was full of translucent zombies, with our Quarantine Specialist protecting Manila with all she could muster. The game came down to a lucky Infection draw - there were three or four cards we could have hit that would have chained outbreaks and lost us the game before I could cure the final disease. But we got lucky and won.

So as it stands now, we've got four wins and no funding. All of Red save Manila is Faded, as is Chennai. We've got a starting Research Station in Istanbul, one Unfunded Event (Air Strike), two Positive Mutations on "Yellow Fever" and a few relationships and upgrades on our characters. The Operations Expert is the only Scarred character (Regretful), but I expect others will be joining him now that we've got so many Faded cities.

Very excited to play again next chance I get.

EDIT: Regarding the earlier discussion about characters, I can't imagine playing without a Quarantine Specialist. Once COdA becomes untreatable, you need to quarantine those cities every chance you get. Our quarantine specialist usually spends her time bouncing between a couple spots in Asia, just keeping them under control.

April

Lost our first game in May, but came back in the second half of the month. Colonel T.L. Jones with the Grizzled Veteran perk was key.

September (box 8):

We blew another of the Box 8 vaccines to shut down the first epidemic, then found the paranoid soldier right away... Which promptly caused the Soldier to go rogue, since he had the Paramilitary Escort upgrade. Good thing too as the alternative condition would've flipped the Quarantine Specialist which would've been awful. We won with tons of room to spare.

The Operations Expert continues to be our star - his mobility is incredible, and he's going to be fantastic for the military base sabotage objective, assuming it sticks around.

October (boxes 7&8):

We lucked out in that our City Zero was Madrid, so right near the edge of our zombie quarantine zone. Once again the Operations Expert was the star of the day, flying in and setting up a Military Base and Research Station right away. We blew our last Experimental Vaccine on the first epidemic so we could finish the search action.

Of course then we promptly forgot to open box 7, but its contents wouldn't have changed the course of the rest of the game. We won smoothly and with plenty of time to spare.

Next game we're probably going to be vaccinating like mad. Assuming there's nothing in the November briefing that fucks with that. Road-blocking off C0D4 has kind of backfired on us a bit, in that we'll have a hard time getting in to treat, but I think the Operations Expert and his amazing jetpack will continue to save the day.
