Huh. So... the earliest strips make it clear that the mask makes Peter's voice sound different. Maybe that's a nuance that got dropped later on, or maybe JJ just doesn't pay enough attention to Peter that he'd recognize his voice.

The latter is completely plausible, but now I'm curious if this issue bothers explaining that.

Most comics put the bare amount of effort into characters with secret identities keeping them hidden

I should add that, although it's #6 in an on-going and obviously makes mention of various plot threads, "My Dinner with Jonah" is effectively standalone. It's, fundamentally, a story about Jonah and Spidey sitting down and having a tense, emotional conversation where they air their grievances with each other.

I would know, because I read #6 first before doubling back and reading the rest of the run. So if you or anyone else are intrigued by the premise… give it a read.

Lately I've developed an appreciation for Newspaper Spider-Man. This is a comic that dares to ask the question, "What if Spider-Man were stupid?"

It's bewitching. It always manages to top itself. Spider-Man is never the one who saves the day. His usual M.O. is to get beaten and/or humiliated until the villain is defeated by a combination of the guest star hero and some absolute bullshit. Once he had trouble with an ordinary evil clown. One time the villain defeated Spider-Man and then tripped and fell off a cliff. When he teamed up with Ant-Man, they were shrunken down to the size of insects, and he tried to fight a spider that was bigger than him, forgetting that the spider also has the proportional strength of a spider. His spider-sense is worse than useless, giving him vague and distracting premonitions of evil but never warning him about the brick coming towards his head.

Recently, our boy Pete went out into the Everglades to confront Dr. Curt "The Lizard" Connor. He brought Bruce Banner with him in case he needed extra muscle, although due to a wacky series of blood transfusions it was possible he had been cured of the Hulk. After being attacked by swarms of alligators and pythons, the Hulk showed up and saved them, but now the Hulk and the Lizard are fighting, and Spider-Man is throwing himself in between them so that they don't murder each other before they revert to their human alter egos.

Newspaper Spider-Man may be my favorite incarnation of the character for precisely those same reasons.

That or the one from the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, but for radically different reasons.

This is a mind-blowing application of comic book science. Whoever is writing the strip deserves this year Comic Book Nobel Award for Physics.

Looks like IDW, of all places, has published reprinted collections of Newspaper Spider-Man for a few years now. Doesn’t look like they’ve gone much past the early-80s, but I’m awful tempted to pick one up and see how it compares to the current madness on display.

My favorite storyline was the brief arc where Spider-Man tries to get on a commercial airline, in costume (only succeeding being Barak O’Bama gave him clearance) and is constantly harassed by an annoying child.

Stan Lee has the writer's credit, but who knows if it's actually him?

I feel fairly confident that it is not,

I also strongly suspect that, while he’s an actual employee, “Stan Lee” has been a pseudonym in use since at least the 1970s.

I like that the largest panel in that strip is devoted to a woman hitting Spider-Man in the head with a rock on accident.

Wow.

I want to read an Oral History of Newspaper Spider-Man article to learn more about the ghostwriters and ghostartists behind this masterpiece.
