Ultimate is pretty good for at least the first couple of trades. Your mileage may vary after that. It's nowhere near as bad as the Clone Saga years though.

My only regular Spider-Man exposure is The Comics Curmedgeon's coverage of the newspaper Spider-Man strip.

I feel like that's more than enough for me.

I've been picking up a few of them there and there. Where would you suggest the cutoff point? I have trades 1-3 and the Venom one.

EDIT: that would be number 6, actually.

Then you're already fine.

Yeah, that's where most people agree it started to take a dip in quality. The Ultimate version of the Clone Saga was interesting, but it was a brief spike that just couldn't hold my interest after things like Silver Sable and Carnage.

Carnage was the big drop-off for me.

Wait, check that. The six-issue Spidey vs Doc Ock was the drop-off, Carnage - specifically the big mistake at the end of the arc - killed the book off. Plus, nowdays anytime Slott or Waid write Spidey it's very good, so I don't have to read Bendis' horribly talky version.

(Looking back on the omnimus... he was a LOT less chatty in the old days. There's none of those double-page walls of text like you get with his new stuff.)

Yeah, Carnage was a big mistake for the Ultimate line. I never really did like the Green Goblin and Doc Ock revisited (except for issue 25 I think it was where they played off everyone's expectations with a bridge scene).

I read the first issue of the Ultimate Spider-Man relaunch and looks like they retconned the bad move they made in Carnage.

Retcons already? Isn't the line only 10 years old or so and pretty much with the original writer still on board?

Yeah, apparently when the Carnage symbiote sucked Gwen Stacy's corpse dry, it actually completely absorbed her DNA, memories, and consciousness and essentially became her. When Venom absorbed the symbiote, it left behind her body, completely intact.

I remembered having read what happened, but the fact that I couldn't really remember the broad strokes until you gave a breakdown cements the fact that it isn't worth reading (And that Bendis shouldn't have done that in the first place).

*After reading Final Chapter*

...

Goddammit, can't those people just stay dead for a change? Especially May Parker, who I just don't like.

Aunt May is great when utilized well.

Which appropriately one author did.

And then she almost died.

...maybe she should've stayed dead the first time...?

The one thing the newspaper Spidey has going for it is when they did that horrible storyline to break Peter and MJ up again, the newspaper comics played along with it for a couple of months then said, "Wait, that's stupid, fuck it!" and re-retconned it.

When the newspaper Spider-Man thinks your storylines are bullshit, you have serious problems.

I've made big long tirades about this before but Spider-Man is by far my favorite super hero when he's written well. But comic books being what they are, those moments are few and far between. So I just pick up a handful of the most worthwhile trades once a decade or so and enjoy Spider-Man when he's at the top of his game and ignore everything else.
