I mean, I could use a Cryptic Command or two. And an Oblivion Stone would be nice. I'm glad the prices are dipping for a lot of cards in this set. Even when I had disposable income, I didn't like to spend more than $30 or $40 a month on Magic. Cards that were $10 or over gave me pause.

MTG: Arena Closed Beta starts December 4th, but they basically said the first round will only include the people from the Alpha test anyway. I want to play it!

Jaya Ballard's return is all but confirmed.

Good or bad, I'll find room for her planeswalker card in my Jaya Ballard deck.

Angry

So it looks like alt-right mouthpiece youtuber MTGHeadquarters, aka Unsleeved Media, led a harassment dogpile on prominent MTG cosplayer Christine Sprankle, prompting her to give up cosplay.

In an astonishingly poorly-thought-out move, the Commander Rules Committee has unbanned most silver-border cards until January 15.

You know, I wasn't much of a fan of Unstable. But I was fine with it being its own thing, you know? Live and let live. People can have fun with their Un-decks with each other, or draft, or whatever. That was fine. But this decision feels... I don't know, intrusive? Like, if someone rolls up with a deck of "gotcha" cards, or builds a turn-2-win Spike deck (to say nothing about the cards that cause interactions which cannot be adjudicated by judge calls), there's not much I can do outside of voicing my objections or sitting out the game.

on the other hand, i'm fucking over the moon about this. let people play with the cards they own, especially otherwise worthless silverborder cards. yeah there will be spike assholes, but they were here before playing leovold decks. the rest of us will be super excited to cast earl of squirrel and thopter pie factory all day long.

My thinking, yeah. The power to completely ruin a game of Commander is already very much there.

I see. So because the format is broken in some ways, that means it should be broken in others?

Commander should have its own identity. I enjoy Commander because it's social, and because it's the format with a tension between strong gameplay and bizarre game states. I don't want it to be the format where I'm at risk of my deck getting knocked over by a nerf gun, forced to take part in a breathing contest, endure someone's shoes on the table, or remain silent for fear of saying the word "destroy".

Yes, and before this decision, you could totally play those cards in a playgroup that allowed them, just like you could play Planechase or Archenemy or run Conspiracies. This kind of unilateral, and bizarrely time-limited, format-wide decision only serves to cause confusion among the playerbase and weakens the credibility of the Rules Committee.

I've been watching a bunch of Loading Ready Run streams lately and was thinking about getting back into paper Magic, but it's been like 20 years since I last tapped a land. Does anyone have any pointers on where to start? I feel like walking into local FNM unprepared is just going to get me slaughtered.

I've played against Crucible of Worlds combo in commander, Un-decks can't be more annoying than that.

A few years ago I would have said play the Duels games, but the last one is kind of a disaster and it's getting hard to find hardware that will run the old ones. I think they're on PS3?

i recommend watching vids from Tolarian Community College on youtube, and you'll get all kinds of pointers.

Thanks for the advice everybody! I had played Duels of the Planeswalkers ages ago but didn’t know they were still updating it. I downloaded the latest version from Steam and it’s pretty darn fun. My only real gripe is that there’s no way to get individual cards other than cracking packs - makes it really hard to put together a good deck for online play without spending a bunch of real money. Hopefully the new Arenas version they’re making will fix that somehow.

Shivam: I also looked up the TCC YouTube channel and have been going through the new player videos. Lots of good pointers on where to start when I’m ready.

so Unstable is legit Fun To Play. Work fired three drafts through the weekend and they all got a lot of players. It's funny how many guys have come prepared to pull Spike, especially with Skullclamps.

I was expecting lots of Legions boosters for Summon the Pack.

My immediate mental go-to for Summon the Pack is actually any of the Eldrazi expansions. Giant fatties at common seems good.

My brothers and I did an Unstable draft on New Years. I won about 5 games with Rules Lawyer. Also, those lands look really, really nice.

Rivals of Ixalan pre-release weekend drawing exactly as many players as Fate Reforged. So, not super great. Looked at an interesting spreadsheet of numbers over the last few years. Battle for Zendikar was the second-most-anticipated set, just behind Shadows over Innistrad (aka "Thank God Battle for Zendikar is over!").

This is the first pre-release I've went to in a year or two and I didn't really enjoy it. I like the set, but I had no chance at building a workable deck.
