At least not until she unlocks the Dijon Suit.

Anyway, USGamer previews it and it sounds.... pretty good? Great even? Maybe?

I still feel incredibly wary after Other M, and the Amiibo nonsense isn't winning me over either, but still, if it plays great? I'm on board.

Hard modes in Metroid tend to just make things more tanky and samus weaker. They don't interest me much.

Is this game going to be any good?

I feel like this should be a $20 launch

Why would Nintendo release a new game at half their normal price?

Pretty much every preview of the game has been very positive, so yes?

I dunno, it just looks sort of... half baked to me. I can't really put my finger on it so maybe I shouldn't post at all.

It does look very Metroid-by-numbers, somehow at once inhabiting and bereft of an identity, but I've only seen footage of the first section, which was bound to be reliably familiar. I hope it has some new ideas for areas up its sleeve, and isn't simply transposing a tableau of the greatest hits onto SR-388...

(As always, I realise "Metroid fans" have a lot to answer for regarding such complaints.)

From out of its sleeve comes Samus' armored fist, to punch a metroid in its stupid face

I mean it looks good. Low-poly, since it's a 3DS game, and that's a little disappointing since the Metroid series usually is defined by extremely well-made pixel art, but hey, these are ever-changin' times

The devs ported their last 3ds game to big boy systems with a graphics upgrade. It's not impossible to see that happen with this. I mean, only on the Switch, but.

I find that the games tend to look really good on the 2DS screen(s). It's supposed to be lower resolution than Wii, but maybe that's not a hindrance when not talking Wii ports. Instead of resolution, the processing power can be put into all sorts of background details and stuff that you might not even appreciate if you weren't looking at the screen up close.

So yeah, I do expect this game to be also a visual treat when played on the actual system. This has been on my day 1 list since the reveal, and nothing has changed that. I'm still working through Miitopia, so I might not have time for any other "big" 2DS game in between, but that's just fine since this would step over anything else I might start in the meantime, anyhoo.

This is every Metroid since Super, except maybe the Prime sequels no one liked.

In this case it does actually make sense, a Metroid II remake is the one case they can just use her existing moveset again and get away with it.

I still want a Metroid that plays like the original ideas for Fusion, where Samus could walk on walls/ceilings.

Yeah, I was really hoping Fusion would drop most of Samus' upgrades and entirely rework her, because exploring her skillset is the real Metroidvania.

It certainly would've been neat to see new moves. But nope, the only "original" moves Fusion added to Samus's moveset were ledge grabbing and putting ice on missiles, and everything else was just a stripped down version of her Super Metroid moveset.

Real talk: the Metroid fanbase is so conservative that I don't think any sort of radical departure would be welcomed at this point. Fans want reassurance at this point after M:OM and Fed Force. Hopefully Samus Returns goes over well and Metroid Prime 4 has the freedom to be more experimental

Personally, I'd be happy just to have an unfamiliar, weird, disquieting and disorienting planet to explore again - the game's formal qualities don't have to deviate radically in order to achieve it. This remake's SR-388 seems to look exactly as I'd expect a low-poly 3D Zebes to look, which is fine, but has the warmth and reassurance of decades of familiarity about it. The threat of the Metroids will doubtless create moments of chilling tension, but their entire world could be as bizarre and terrible...

One of the best things about Metroid 2, even beyond the rest of the series, is that it managed to sell SR-388 as being a weird, abandoned and, above all else, dangerous place. Nobody is supposed to live there, and all through the game you find overgrown installations and half-buried military bunkers that prove that someone tried to, once.

The trailers for this don't really bear that out, but, well, they're isolated clips of the game picked to make the game look fun and exciting, and staring at a broken robot jumping around an empty, dusty room, or seeing a broken statue isn't really either of Those things.

New info video:

I'm liking some of the new Aeon additions, as well as the return of the (2D) Grapple Beam.

I get that some kind of crowd-pleasing, return-to-form is kind of necessary to restore faith in the franchise after two missteps*, or at least that's the cynical corporate view, but… I wish they weren't sacrificing all that's unique and interesting about Metroid II to do it.

They probably should have just remade Super.

* This is probably why MercuryStream's original pitch for a Fusion remake fell through.

Fusion doesnt need a remake. Remaster, maybe.

m2, for all it's charms, did need a remake. Maybe this will go the wrong way. I for one still play both OG Metroid and ZM, so I'll do same here. But early gb games don't hold up well, and m2 is difficult in that regard as well.

I want a new post fusion game, or for MP4 to move beyond fusion.
