This seems like maybe a joke instead of a real question, but:

Metroid Fusion is on a space station instead of spelunking into a planet, so it's relatively low on cave-like environments.

Metroid Prime also has environments that feel more lived in (for various reasons), rather than just caves.

it was a real question, all my previous forays into metroid got kinda hindered because i just couldn't get interested in the environments (tbf this is mostly me being a dumbass)

but yeah as i looked into it more, fusion and prime seemed like pretty good entry points. so thanks!

i'll try out pinball too

Yup. New SMB U was at WiiU launch in late 2012 and New Luigi U was summer 2013. After that, nothing.

No, SM Run does not count as an NSMB game.

Basically, at this point Metroid is the annual franchise or at least semi-annual if MP4 comes in 2019, and New SMB is the series that went on a Nintendo hiatus and hasn't been heard of in several years now.

If you want similar games outside the franchise, I quite enjoyed Ori and the Blind Forest. And of course there are the later 2D Castlevanias

Nah. Just because it has a NSMB tileset doesn't make it a NSMB game. All the level design elements and downloading user made stages off the net instantly make it more niche.

Completely different from having an actual New SMB game from start to finish.

More importantly though Super Mario Maker never gave us slopes. Non-SMB1 stages just ain't the same without shit to slide on.

I'm pretty far into Samus Returns. I mostly like it, but it has problems. Since the structure of the game is continually moving downward instead of exploring in all directions, constantly unlocking abilities that will allow you to pass obstacles you saw in the previous area doesn't work as well as a hook. I'll probably do a sweep before the final area and get some items I missed, but I'm used to backtracking more frequently in this kind of game and I can't imagine wanting to do that here with this map.

I just fought the boss that unlocks the power bomb, and I have a bone to pick. When it used its vacuum, I used the screw attack to stay above it and didn't consider using the morph ball spider climb ability to avoid being sucked in. So when I got to the third phase where the only way to damage it is to drop bombs into the vacuum, I had no idea what to do and thought I was stuck in a loop where it just kept repeating its three attack patterns. I looked it up after I died, and I tried using the spider climb to avoid the vacuum in the second phase, but it seemed like it didn't work. So it works in the third phase but not the second? Why? Is there some indication of this in the game that I missed? Seems like terrible communication by the game.

It works in all three phases, it just the only way to damage it in the third. Third form also takes far less damage before itís stagged iirc.

Weird, I don't know what I did wrong. Still had no idea I was supposed to do that.

I'm still hate-playing this game for some reason. It gets better after some upgrades, but rather than being cool and empowering it just raised the game to baseline playable.

Hey so I've been avoiding this thread because I haven't played it and wanted to avoid spoilers but I started playing this a few days ago.

I'm really enjoying it. It's very good!

There is really not much wrong with this, not sure why it's getting so much hate. I've seen what people have said but still, for me personally, I am playing nothing but a great game here.

Love it.

Yay!

It's a matter of taste. I also loath Dark Souls like games for the same reasons a lot of people love them.

I enjoyed it overall as well, but this game definitely has its ups and downs. Around area 4 or so, enemies start becoming a real slog until you get your next meaningful upgrade. Then enemies become a lot more tolerable. I also have beef with the control scheme, but that has more to do with the circle pad than anything else.

The boss fights are excellent, and the game is really cool overall.

I think the control scheme is amazing, other than not having a dedicated morph ball button, but I have to admit I dream of playing the game on a system that isn't quite so, um, ergonomically disastrous.
