Humanity's first, last and only line of defense is in the hands of a paramilitary organization staffed entirely of emotionally fragile children, and also some 14 year olds in giant robots (Janet voice: Not a robot)

Yeah octo if you wanna watch it, do, but also if you feel like you're not sure about it anymore, stop. It will not get better for you.

It does have some breathtaking monster/robot battles and it was made right in that sweet spot for hand drawn animation. (Assuming we're talking bout the original show here and not the remakes...I haven't actually looked at the news item)

I would say that in terms of Octo-Ness it peaks at Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win! and has a cluster of like . . . Octo-adjacent episodes after that.

So, maybe in that that middle section the show would technically it would "get better" for him, relative to say Episodes 3-4. Everything before and after that mid-series Octo-Peak, though . . .

It's the original show, the recap movie, and End of Evangelion.

IS there any incarnation of Eva that isn't hugely problematic in some form? Maybe the recent AU manga where they were all a student council or something?

Eva and FLCL are both extremely messy shows. (And that's a big part of why I like them.)

Eva is... way messier than FLCL. Get a box of kleenex, Shinji.

I'm curious if Western nerds in 2018 now have the context to appreciate EVA as a love letter to tokustatsu, as opposed to 80s kids like me insisting it was a mecha deconstruction (which... it kind of is).

I appreciate it as a logical escalation of Shinji trying to kiss a sleeping Asuka in episode 9 meant to demonstrate just how fucked up that is.

Eva is a show in drastic need of an editor, and a lot of it's message gets dumber and dumber as I get older, but it looks amazing and has some sweet ass fights, and despite how dumb and bad it can be I overall still like the characters. It's basically is locked in as one of my favorite animes ever by virtue of being what got me into "real" anime.

That said, EoE is amazing not only because it's weird and fucked up, but because it's a GIGANTIC "fuck you" to all the ungrateful fans who complained and sent death threats (some of which are shown briefly in the movie...or it might be in Death/Rebirth, I forget) and didn't "get" the TV ending. I still think the TV ending is great but the fact that a gigantic budget big motion picture made for a super popular show was made and the entire message was "hey, fuck you for not liking the thing I made, you dick" is just...all-time top tier insane. I still can't believe it happened and it's been like 20 years.

I can't wait till people who haven't seen it before watch it on Netflix and are super duper confused

I love that the angels start out as "gigantic humanoid with a skeleton motif" and become increasingly abstract high-concept monsters that couldn't possibly work outside of animation. Leliel; the two dimensional surface that casts a three dimensional textured shadow; was probably my favourite.

In one of the movies, Asuka slips into a coma and Shinji futilely tries to shake her back into consciousness. Her hospital gown opens up, exposing her breasts, and we're treated to a momentary discretion cur away from him jackin' it and then a shot of his hand covered in semen

As noted, I have not seen the show but... is that scene really necessary?

That scene is part of the aforementioned "fuck you" to fans, so yes. That's, like, the first thing that happens too. Maybe second, it's been a while. It really goes places! That movie is definitely an experience. A pleasant one? No...but an experience all the same!

It's definitely the first actual scene, after some brief flashes of the ruined city landscape.

It's also a show about hormonal teenagers forced into saviour roles. So stressed out, horny, hormonal teens don't always act appropriately.

It's a series steeped in gynophobia. That's not even the most effed-up thing he does in that movie.

End of Evangelion is one of my favorite pieces of animation, and I identify so hard with its exploration of depression and despair (when the world will literally end unless you get out of bed, and you stay in bed anyway). But woof, it's a rough watch.

I've been meaning to commission a "Get in the Robot, Shinji" cross-stitch for a while.

I mean, showing Shinji as a solipsistic little jerk who thinks only of his own condition when "denied" a forced kiss due to Asuka's sleep-talking about her mother is one thing. It's an attempt to both humanize her and make her sympathetic, and to show him as capable of toxic, harmful behavior despite all his anxieties. It's quite another to also revel in male-gaze of 14yos explicitly for the "benefit" of the audience, and then try to shame the audience with the mayonnaise scene.

I appreciate that there's depth in Anno's self-therapy, but when it comes to the show's sex politics, can't have it both ways.

I love Evangelion. I watched the movie with my friend after showing him the series for the first time, and remember thinking to myself "okay you gotta remember what happens in the movie this time" and I totally don't except that it's rad. It might've been Cowboy Bebop that truly got me into anime, but Evangelion certainly showed me what else anime could be about.
