Default Déraciné

Sony downplayed this during their presentation, but I think it's the most interesting thing they showed. The PS blog has a proper announcement:

Quote:
Déraciné is an all new adventure game that brings Japan Studio, FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki together for the first time since Bloodborne. The story unfolds in a secluded boarding school where six children quietly spend their days. It is into this environment that you appear, an unseen faerie existing in a world of frozen time. As the story progresses, time shifts around you, at times even throwing you into the past.

Our goal as we develop this title is to use the latest in VR technology to create a traditional adventure game or visual novel where the user explores a quiet world teeming with mysteries.

Déraciné’s most important element is the bond between the player, an unseen faerie, and the children of the boarding school. This is shown using fragmented storytelling, where the user pieces events together from scattered story elements, and a setting where time is frozen. All of this comes together in a compelling, emotional narrative.
Quote:
I also have a special message from Miyazaki himself:

“This title got its start when I asked myself whether I could recreate the classic adventure game with its relaxed pace in virtual reality, giving users an entirely unique experience. SIE was interested, and I am very grateful to have them as a partner as we develop this game together.
“The result is that the concept behind the title has changed little since those initial thoughts, and Déraciné has a warm, peculiar feel to it that is completely different from anything we have done before. I’d love for as many users as possible to give it a try.”
Like I said, I'm really intrigued by this. That it's a FromSoft project that's in a completely different style than the action fare that they've become synonymous with is what initially piqued my interest, but the game looks good beyond that. Looks like a quiet, contemplative sort of affair set in an English boaring house. I'll be following this closely.

I'd be more interested in this if it didn't require me to give Sony another $300 for their VR headset.

I'm interested, but that silly hat needed to play the game still costs a lot of money. Money I'd like to use on a Switch.

Yeah, I'd love to play this if I was able. I might pick up one of the dumb VF helmets if it was steeply discounted. Between this, Skyrim, RE7, Superhot, Zone of the Enders v2, REZ, the Psychonauts spinoff, and Wipeout, it would be pretty interesting to run around in VR.

So it's the Souls storytelling mechanic where you piece bits and chunks of the story together, and time is irrelevant, but there's no combat because it's an adventure game. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do this in a way I'd care about EXCEPT Miyazaki.

...but VR...I mean...

=\

Looks like a spiritual successor to the Echo Night games...
The worldbuilding and intriguing plot of a Soulsborne game without requiring combat skill?
I'd be all over it in a jiffy.....

but then it's PS VR. Yeah. u_u

I was so excited by this. I've wanted to play a non-RPG game from From Software (without having to buy an old system).

But, I'll echo the chorus of groans. This requires VR? That is a shame.

I'd be curious to know if PS VR is profitable for Sony or PS VR is simply laying the groundwork for the VR future that everyone (games and tech media) assumes will happen.

I'm still convinced that if PSVR falters just slightly Sony will drop it like a hot potatoe just like the PSP and Vita. They are already pushing off the VR announcements to sizzle reels and after conference reveals.

VR has a pretty big amount of indie support, though. And it sells more PlayStation Cameras and PlayStation Move controllers.

This looks like some Tacoma-ass, Sleep No More-ass shit and I really hope there might be a non-VR version at some point (but probably not)

That was only three years ago!

I'm glad this game exists, even if VR means I'll probably never play it

If this interests anyone, I'd recommend also checking out Echo Night and Shadows of Memories. No VR required!

Echo Night is available on PS3 though, that's where I played it from.
I know, but it's better than nothing.

Also the sequel is on the Japanese PSN.
