My favorite part of this game is building elaborate traps to kill things with water or magma.

I thought that was the only part of this game.

We all must make sacrifices to push forward this great dwarf society. You were too beautiful for this world.

Here's the bastard that did it. I guess there's nothing to do except send more miners in and hope they don't die, too.

There are some crazy meat types in this game.

This engraving kicks ass.

Brer gets a kitten, Balrog bleeds to death. Seems fair.

Do I have enough posts to get a Gamespite dwarf named after me?

Oh god, they've tasted dwarf blood and now they want more.

Well, I'm sick of these motherfucking fish in my motherfucking river. This time, I'm bringing in the military.

EDIT: OR MAYBE EVERYONE IS GOING TO RUN OVER THERE AND DIE OK

Gred: Go to Orders and forbid dwarves from going outside, or pause the game and use K to go over the corpses, and manually forbid them and their inventory; this'll keep them from rushing out to pick over the bodies (usually).

I haven't gotten quite that far down the user list, but I'll name one of the new migrants that showed up after you.
I make no guarantees of a peaceful death, though.

Wait, you're going by post count? Damn it, I'm only on page three. I'm so much red-shirted cannon fodder now.

Before you start playing Dwarf Fortress, one of the first things you need to do is let the game generate a world for you. During this process, a history of the world is generated, including various civilizations, deities, historical figures, and events. A couple of text files containing a bunch of this information are also created, so you can look at them and see what's out there in the world and track the line of rulers of the different civilizations, if you want.

In the mayor's office are a number of engravings depicting historical events that occurred in the region known as the Forest of Liberty (the specific areas within the region are mentioned most of the time). I don't remember if my fortress is in the region or if maybe it's just bordering it. Regardless, the events in chronological order:

Depicted here seems to be some sort of betrayal by a human against an elf in a forest retreat called Mifavasofi, translated as "Blazesname." Currently, this civilization seems to consist largely of dwarves. Very few elves live there now.

Slakga Seduceddooms here is a demon worshiped by the goblins of the Seducer of Cruelties. Ayelaca, or "Twigslapped," is also a forest retreat. This one, however, is no longer inhabited, likely because Slakga wiped it out.

When animals kill your dwarves, they gain a name. This event is probably notable because the bear here killed a lot of dwarves. Quite a few fish gained names amongst my dwarves.

Gilafithithu, or "Rumorsnarls", is yet another forest retreat. It, too, is mostly populated by dwarves now. They are probably the ones referred to by "The Conquest of Rumorsnarls."

I don't know anything about this one. Neither of the two were rulers.

But that's enough ancient history. On this date, in the year 248, a new glorious event shall be heralded in all the histories of the world.
Thanks to the mighty Gamespite army (consisting of Brer, estragon, Eusis, and philliam) and their efforts to harass those murderous, vile fish away, LilSpriteX was able to channel incredibly fast and complete the Great River Diversion Project.

Now, water (and miasma... and blood) is free to flow into the underbelly of the fortress, allowing for much safer water collection at the well.

This achievement couldn't have been accomplished without the sacrifices of the brave men (maybe women, since I didn't bother paying attention to dwarf genders when naming everyone) of Gamespite, most recently including Paul le Fou and Zef. May we have a moment of silence for the deceased.

Note: Brickroad died in a cave-in that he caused.

If you aren't in that last screenshot, you're still alive. Contrary to popular belief, MOST of my dwarves haven't died horrific deaths yet!

So how do I keep my people from getting eaten by fish? I tried to zone a water source but it didn't work, the would just go to the river and get eaten, and then another guy would have to go even further away to get water to avoid the blood, and run into even more fish.

This is by far the most annoying thing i've come up against. I'm trying to build an indoor water source, but everyone is getting eaten and it's not done yet. And one guy decided to walk INTO the room was blocking with a floodgate before installing it and almost starved. And I can't build another becuase my woodworker is walking all over to get water, only to be interrupted. Grrrr

I still function!

I mean, I may be an unemployed Tanner, but at least I didn't die from the merciless assault of small fishies!

This is a fun thread. Due to my computer's sad state, I can't seem to play this game (there's noticeable interface lag, bizarre for an ascii game, but Frets On Fire has the same problem) but I'm enjoying the vicarious thrill of seeing little symbols build a mighty fortress.

I think it appeals to the fort-building desire that many people has as kids. Which is why I get bogged down in building bases in many RTSes, and get inevitably slaughtered by the player who is willing to expand and actually go to war while I'm finishing up the aesthetics on my base's walls.

It's not actually ASCII, the default tilemap just uses similar stuff. (yes! you CAN play DF with nethack- or DCSS-y tiles, and many people have come up with different sets) DF is just a processor monster.

This is basically my RTS history as well.

Hey how do you build a tower? I can't make "up" stairs from the surface, so I don't know how else to go about it.

I still think it's really silly that fish are some of the biggest killers in this game. I wouldnt feel like such an idiot if it was goblins or something, but fish?

Build up ramps. Note you have to use the Build and not designate when dealing with the surface.

Carp are vicious, man.

(The way the game works is: anything that shows up in the unit screen is a potential friend or foe, can be killed, and are individuals. The fish that your fisherdwarves are catching are NOT these fish; they're invisible "biomass", essentially, and a product of the water tiles)

Re: tower: under the big "Site a building" menu, SOMEWHERE in there are stairs, I don't remember where off the top of my head. It may be under the Walls/Floors/Etc submenu.
