Default Pokémon Sword & Shield

Pokémon Sword & Shield for the Nintendo Switch, the eighth generation of Pokémon games, will release in late 2019. Set in the Britain-inspired Galar region, you'll start the game choosing between the grass monkey Grookle, the fire rabbit Scorbunny, and the water chameleon Sobble.

Not that anyone was worried about this, but one of the first things shown in the trailer was the player engaging in a battle against a wild pokemon, as is traditional.

This post will be updated with further details.

Is that, um, mouse thing fighting Pikachu new or old?

Anyway, very pretty world imo. Galar sounds goofy. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

That's Minccino, introduced in generation 5.

Hopefully they'll be able to iron it out to run as smoothly as Let's Go did, the trailer was looking pretty jumpy like the 3DS games were.

I think the grass starter is the clear winner at this point. Water was my favorite Gen I-IV, but its been nothing but depressed looking starters since then for water.

The fire starter is my favorite, as the fire starter is always my favorite. The water starter has an A+ name though.

I'm really, really relieved at how the environments look. I felt that one of Let's Go's biggest failings was that it looks the theme park version of Yellow. Let's Go uses Gen I's technical limitations as its style guide, not Gen I's concept; and as a result it looks plastic and safe and samey and clearly built from templates, like everything is a shiny new toy right out of the box instead of a world that people and monsters live and work in.

This is one of my favourite pieces of concept art of all time, from early in Gen I's development:

And Gen VIII looks like that! Everything in the Galar region is detailed and bespoke. It's not gritty or broken down like a lot of games will do, it's a world that's been around and been cared for for a long, long time. I'm way into it. Fuck me up, Pokémon Shield!

I'm pickin' Sobble 'cause his name is amazing.

I am sacrificing my two thread tags to tag the actual names of the games so someone else will have to come up with all the jokey-jokes

I always choose the water starter because ????, and this will continue in this gen.

I like the new setting. I especially like that it doesn't look as flat as the games have been in the past.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Let's Go's wild encounter system transfer to the main series, but it is what it is.

Now imagining Pikachu screaming "GOD MADE ME A KNIFE, AND A KNIFE HAS BUT ONE PURPOSE!" in the Ryan Reynolds voice but everybody just hears a particularly anguished "pika pika".

Aesthetics are a huge step up in VISION AND CONVICTION from Let's Go, and though Alola is my favorite setting I like that they seem to have made a point of going near opposite with this one's location to maximize freshness.

Going Shield most likely because a wolf with a sword is old hat and redundant besides, but a wolf with a shield now you have my attention

I really can't make a decision until I can know which final evolution is least-bad which, if any, exclusive legendaries are cats.

I'm leaning water, the bunny has a dumb band aid on his nose and the grass guy just looks weird. The water final evolution will probably be ugly tho so who knows

100% agreed.

Also, Scorbunny looks like a combination of Sonicnthe Hedgehog and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and also appears to have a bow tie.

So plainly there is no room for debate on this issue

PokeBritain's looking good!

Can't wait for the post-Brexit Pokemon Axe, where Galar is a post apocalyptic hellhole

Also Rime City in Detective Pikachu being so obviously London makes even more sense now.

I love that the female PC has a proper backpack instead of another goddamn purse.

Finally, some parity.

The clothes actually look quite British. The Steam Town looks like it's Manchester, which would make sense.
