I think it started with the GBA SP. I had to take mine apart last year to fix one of the shoulder buttons.

I've been afraid to go back to the Mega Man Zero Collection because playing through the first game in the collection put some noticeable wear on the R button...

I never heard about that with GBA SP. But to my knowledge, DS Phat avoided the shoulder button issue, so it seems to be something that affects the slimmer and more cramped systems like DS Lite and 3DS, where the shoulder buttons are closer to what they are on GBA SP than on OG GBA, DS Phat and 2DS.

Yeah, I completely blew out the right shoulder button on my OG DS. First it got stiff, then sticky, and then clacky/thunky. I didn't realize that it was a thing until now, though.

Is River City: Knights of Justice good? There's a Natsume sale in the eShop right now. Reviews on it were pretty iffy.

Wasn't a fan, myself. Felt like it stripped a lot of what made RCR so playable, simplified the combat and introduced a lot of toothless random encounters.

If you're playing River City Ransom and grown because you get into a fight against a horse of enemies, something has gone awry.

That's why you remap it to Megaman X controls with dash on the A button.

That's terrible. You shouldn't even use X controls in the X games.

I noticed a while ago that my 3DS's brightness level was changing back and forwards at random, and thought it was a quirk of whatever I was playing at the time, but then I noticed it again in Metroid: Samus Returns. I went looking for brightness controls in settings and didn't find anything, but just now I had a look at the home menu settings and there it is: auto-brightness. Off, please.

If you say so, Dr. Claw. :B

BTW, L is for dashing, R is for melee weapons.

Problem is, the R button is needed to activate the missles in the Metroid II remake. In retrospect, I think Mario Kart killed it the last two times.

It puts RCR characters into an RPG setting and takes out most of the RPG elements, being more of a pure beat em up.

Never understood this "claw" nonsense. I can reach everything fine with my thumb: Tip for Y, underside of my knuckle for B, and the base for A. And I can hit any combination in just about any order.

I can do it, too, but I find it uncomfortable to perform a dash jump while holding a charge. Adding the wall dash to that complicates things further. It feels like too many simultaneous responsibilities for one digit, to me. Especially when you can so easily remap it.

To each their own, though, of course.

I've started considering a Japanese 2DS just to get Final Fantasy Pictlogica and some other Japanese exclusives. Are there any pitfalls in getting a Japanese system? Major differences in the OS just besides the language (of which I have a very limited grasp)? eShop requires Japanese address and/or credit card? Something else like that?

(Please localize FF Pictlogica and save my money, Square Enix)

On 3DS/Wii U, the eShop is very import friendly. You don't even have to input an address, and basically any card will work.

(For the Switch, they added more restrictions to acceptable forms of payment, maybe as a concession for making the shop theoretically region free? My guess is that the idea was that this didn't matter when system were tied to companies, but not that anyone can access any store, they need the figleaf of not accepting cards from the wrong region to appease some stakeholder, either an internal faction at Nintendo or a major 3rd party publisher.)

That does sound very good. Japanese 2DS systems aren't even very expensive, as long as we aren't talking about that stupendously stylish DQ11 N2DS XL special edition. (Which would be one awesome system to have, natch.)

Tips:

-More than likely your credit card will flag this as fraud since its a transaction happening out of the country. I had to specifically call the help line for my card to tell them it wasn't and it hasn't been an issue since.

-The eShop has one extra option on the page with Prepaid Card or Pay with Debit/Credit (some kind of bank card or something? been a while since I tried to Google translate it) so just make sure you're clicking the right one when you go to purchase something.

Can you use a prepaid eShop card on a Japanese system? Or will cards bought in North America not work?

Default Nintendo 3DS

My US “travel reward” Visa with good exchange rate works in the eShop. I did actually use it in Japan first, but that’s the fraud alert thing you may have to settle. Doesn’t require a Japanese address. I also use this card for amazon.co.jp orders.

Also, gift card-like things are usually “region locked” so I wouldn’t expect US cards to work outside North America.

Dammit, I have to call the bank and cancel all my credit cards, because otherwise I'll end up ordering one of these by the end of the day.

Sooo sexy ;_;

This is good to hear. I picked up Dream Team Bros again to give it a second chance and I'm actually really enjoying it this time around for some reason. I think I'm just in the mood for Mario and Luigi!
