I know Questionable Content gets mixed reactions around here, but "girl falls asleep dreaming about ex-soldier robot girlfriend" is exactly the kind of story I want the comic to be about.

Chris Hastings (Dr. McNinja) has started five, count 'em, five new webcomics, each updating on a different weekday. Instead of having regular websites you can follow 'em on Twitter or Tumblr.

He describes them thus:
Quote:
Monday: Magical Merlin - Kooky wizard shenanigans
Tuesday: Queen of Clubs - James Bond with a dash of Mary Worth
Wednesday: Asimov's Laws - Robots and murder!
Thursday: Karate Sewer Gator - Dumb dumb dumb
Friday: Woodsman! - Mark Trail + Predator
He is doing this in order to drum up contributions to his Patreon, apparently.

It would be so much easier to read if Hastings bothered to tag each series properly. That way I could read them chronologically.

Good news: he has gone back and tagged each series properly.

Reading through some old Hark! A Vagrant, I realized that this Wonder Woman comic takes on a whole different meaning in today's political climate.

Or at least it makes me nostalgic for the days when we could laugh about Wonder Woman lazing around, solving crosswords puzzles, because she's decided to only fight nazis.

A part of me wants the Psy-Cop stuff to be its own thing but I know it's better in small pieces.

So, quite awhile back on the interwebs there was this webcomic called Breakfast of the Gods. The best way it could be described is 'Breakfast Cereal Mascot Avengers', which pitted Captain Crunch against the evil Count Chocula, and pretty much every cereal mascot under the sun got involved in an all-out battle between the two sides.

A few years back it disappeared from its original location, eventually popping up as a paperback you could order.

But now all the pages are online again, just click on the 'Book One' button on the right to start at the beginning. The formatting is a bit annoying since you need to manually click on each image to see the full size, but I'm still happy to see the whole thing available to read online again. Check it out, if it sounds up your alley.

(the recent Retronauts episode about food mascot games may or may not have gotten me to seek this out again)

Kate Beaton needs us!

Impossibly Talented Comics Creator Kate Beaton Needs Your Help

Quote:
Kate Beaton, as you hopefully already know, is the writer and illustrator of the phenomenal Hark! A Vagrant. Do you like classic literature, historical fanfic, sass-mouthed women, and cool comics? That’s Hark! A Vagrant.

Unfortunately, Beaton’s current project isn’t that fun. She’s launched a YouCaring crowdfunding campaign to raise money for her sister, Becky Beaton, who is currently fighting cervical cancer. As we here on this site are passionate about both Beaton’s art and women’s health, this hits doubly hard.
Her work is enmeshed deep within Talking Time's very culture. Sally forth!

My first thought reading that was surprise that even with Canada's healthcare, cancer treatment is too much to pay for. Then I read the details and saw that the money is mostly for "experimental" trials in America. I hope Kate Beaton and her family aren't being taken for a ride.

As someone who works in cancer care in Canada, this is my worry too. I don't know everything about her situation, so maybe there is something extra they could do for her in a clinical trial, but if so it's a long shot.

Clinical trials are by definition a long shot, yeah. Good friend of mine worked in research chemistry on last-line cancer drugs, and some of those compounds can give you months of quality time with family and friends before they become ineffective. And at a time when days or hours are unspeakably precious.

That's not entirely true. Most clinical trials pit a new technique versus an existing one because it is hoped that the new one will yield better results. And most of the time, even if the trial is better than the existing technique, the improvement is fairly marginal. If a treatment technique is clearly better than the established practice, it's considered unethical to withhold it from the group of patients who would be randomly selected to receive the standard treatment. So it's possible that a revolutionary new drug or hormonal treatment might help give her those extra months or years, but if it was clearcut then it wouldn't be in a clinical trial.

Thanks for clearing that up! Like I said, my exposure to that process was entirely through someone on the blue-sky research side.

Regardless, I put in 20 bucks and a Facebook post and I wish Kate's sister all the best. I am a huge fan.

Especially of her Nancy Drew comics where she makes up a story based entirely on the covers.

Also a lot of credit to their colorist Cheyenne Wright on that one. Amazing work all 'round.

Man, Girl Genius is a comic that fell off my radar and I keep meaning to go back to it, I just have never gotten around to it. Someday...

On comics that update sporadically but are good, Lackadaisy Cats is going to some dark dark places. Rocky’s recently closed head wound is as horrific as it should be and his constant smiling is very unnerving. I’m worried he’s going to do something very bad that will bring even more serious consequences.

And the three comics of Rock and Tank on Manly Guys was nice without dipping into maudlin territory. Also nice to see Coelosquid explaining where it comes from. If only one or two people read them and get out of bad relationships, she’s done her work.

You're telling me. I used to just buy the trade paperback every year. I gave up after it seemed like they'd never leave Castle Heterodyne.

Well, we just got done with I think at least a couple books' worth of Paris, and now everyone's off to Londinium, if any of that sounds enticing.

We should be so lucky. Lackadaisy Cats has been in a brand-maintenance holding pattern for literally years at this point as the artist spools up production for Lackadaisy The Flame Thrower. Good on her for hitting a rich vein of furry patronage, but it's killed what little narrative momentum had built up.

Such a beautiful splash background pitted against the lumpy monstrosity of that character design is giving me whiplash.

That's still going?! Jesus Christ. I gave up on that comic after deciding that going months and months or, iirc, a year or more? between updates was indeed way too long to wait or even remember wtf was supposed to be happening by the time it rolled around again.

Plus, those haphazard speech bubbles are throwing it off. Great background though.

Regarding webcomics we forget about: I've always figured the shelf life for a webcomic is about seven years. It's extremely rare to find one that goes longer, and the ones that do usually try a new direction at about the five to seven year mark to keep things fresh.
