Miyamoto wants to add his 2 cents:

Quote:
During today's Nintendo Switch Treehouse Live event, Miyamoto acknowledged that after Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, the company shifted to a more casual-friendly approach to 3D Mario games, but with Odyssey they are looking to return to the more exploration-based gameplay seen in those earlier titles.

After having made the Galaxy games and 3D World, which were designed to appeal to a broader audience, Super Mario Odyssey will be "something a little bit more on the core side," Miyamoto said.

Nintendo is looking to "go back to the roots, to Mario Sunshine"

That's...a surprising thing to announce. I'd say those more "casual" games were far better than Sunshine.

I don't think he's attaching any sort of quality judgment to "casual" and "core". He really just seems to be talking in terms of design concepts.

He was. Having to find the objective requires more attentive play and a more complete mental model of the game than having to reach a given objective.

The bottom is "exploring a miniature garden." These kinds of gardens are a particularly Japanese thing, but here are pictures. If you're familiar with zen rock gardens, those are a subset of the larger category of miniature gardens.

The top, as everyone said earlier, is clearing a course.

If you were going to localize this, you'd probably go with Sandbox Games and Level Based Games or something like that.

That's odd, though -- I feel like it wasn't as true for the more closed-off courses that made up the bulk of SMG2 but I think the fact that a lot of levels had hidden stars you could go off the main path to find through extra challenges (the toy and toilet galaxies both having ones that stick out particularly strongly in my mind) sets them closer to 64 than Sunshine. Sunshine generally didn't give you any options about what shines you can get when you go into the stage selection: the one you pick is the one you get to play for with basically no exceptions. Plus, most of the SMG purple coin stages were that sort of open-ended go-everywhere exploration that featured heavily in most of Mario 64.

Well it is a Grand Theft Auto IV mod, Mario's got to fit a Niko-sized build or else his hitboxes and animations would be screwy...er.

I know that somebody, somewhere, never managed to escape the 90s and des honestly think that Mario Odyssey doesn't go far enough, and that Mario should be able to use a fireball gun and hijack cars to ride around New Donk City.

That person also thinks Shadow the Hedgehog isn't radical enough.

Incidentally, if there ends up being urban sprawl here, would that count as "Expand Donk"?

I am glad they're doing another sandbox-styled Mario game, though I wish it didn't have that whole "obstacle course elevated above the rest of the world" thing going on that they seem so fond of. I've wanted something like Super Mario 64 (and less like Sunshine) for a while now -- I'd even take an HD remake of Super Mario 64 DS (HD graphics, throw in a few more characters and stars, maybe?), but this works!

I'm also extremely happy to see Mario in a city again -- outside of Donkey Kong games or Mario Kart, it's been a glaring absence in stage themes for decades, so I'm thrilled they're finally doing it here. I just hate that we're back to Bowser kidnapping Peach again.

That said, I hope we see another goal-oriented 3D Mario again sometime... as well as a new 2D Mario, of course. (Particularly as I'm guessing traditional power-ups will be absent here.)

Now I just need to figure out if this whole hat thing is going to be good for my website, or bad...

The new trailer further argued the persuasive point that this might indeed be the best game ever.

That big band song they have playing is pretty cool and also a little corny.

I'm, unfortunately, expecting eels in some of the holes in that water level they're showing off. Damned eels.
