I really don't care for their designs. They look like Banjo-Kazooie/Conker rejects.

edit: whoops, new page needs more d.bowser

As has been pointed out, "New Donk City", the city with real humans, is only one area of the game (the other areas shown are comparable to areas in the Mushroom Kingdom and some abstractions in Mario Galaxy).

So why make that area Donkey Kong related anyway?

Like, real humans evolved from real primates. Did the cartoon humans in the Mushroom kingdom evolve from Mushroom Kingdom primates? (e.g. there are generic monkey enemies in at least Mario 64 and Yoshi's Island). And are the apes in Donkey Kong separate from the Mushroom kingdom primates, and it's the Donkey Kong primates who the humans in New Donk City are related to?

I'm incredibly hype, but what magic turned marios hat into one of those McDonald's happy meal commercials?

Donkey Kong ostensibly took place in New York, so the New York stage in this game is named after Donkey Kong. I assume that's it.

This game obviously takes place in Captain N's Videoland, and New Donk City is the capital of Kongoland

The last time Mario traveled to the real world, shit got weird.

So it's kinda looking like the city area might be the hub level this time around? The fact that you travel from there on the spaceship thing to a more classic looking 3-D Mario level in the trailer is giving me that impression, at least.

Oh yeah, Donkey Kong was on a construction site.

Game themes aside, throwing your hat to get an extra jump looks nice. Hopefully there's more to it mechanically than just that.

These hats got me thinking...hopefully the superficial comparisons between Super Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time will give the latter some boost in visibility when it finally releases (this year!).

New Donk City is going to contain a boss battle with DK himself at the top of a construction site. You heard it here first.

It's only a matter of time before someone commits the obvious Freudian slip so I'm getting it out there in advance:

New Dong City

There, now no one else has to.

The rabbit nasties exists to exact revenge against Mario for his rabbit-catching shenanigans in Mario 64. Also, they didn't care for his rabbit-eared Bunny Mario bullshit in Super Mario Land 2.

These sleights against Bunnykind will not go unpunished.

My headcanon is that the name "Donkey Kong" is the Kongs way of referring to The Kong That Terrorized New Donk City.

Like, New Donk City-ish Kong.
Donk City-y Kong.
Donk-y Kong.
Donkey Kong.

That's what I'm wondering. It was a game of telephone. Though I'm sad that we won't see Paper Mario Purple Monkey Dishwasher after all.

The worst thing I could say about 3D World is that I am not patient enough to 100% it; that the last 1.5% of the game is kind of bullcrap and I am not going to put myself through them.

The other 98.5% is one of the greatest games I've ever played.

Sunshine wishes it could have come off so well. That said, Sunshine is still a great game, but outshined by others in the series. A 3D Mario that is an 8.8/10 is a letdown because of the curve it is on.

Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and 3D World are all great games. Mario 64 has its flaws, but for a nearly twenty-one year old 3D game it is still fantastic.

I'm lukewarm on the side scroller Marios released in recent years, but the 3D ones have not failed to impress me.

The rumor said that it was specifically an RPG, that it focused on Yoshi more than Mario, and that it is being developed by Ubisoft under the close supervision of Nintendo. To get to there from "the new Mario has rabbits in it" would be pretty wild

I love Mario games, but I'm going in with my customary tempered expectations. Nothing about Odyssey shouts "potential best game ever" -- although obviously Nintendo have the talent and creativity to produce something like that. I didn't really pick up on any obvious conceptual hooks to put the hype over the top. (Well, maybe top hats )

See, with Mario 3D World I was over the moon seeing the multiple characters, range of power-ups, and co-op options. Just the concept of the game seemed like the perfect round-up of everything kid-me imagined Mario would be in the future. But at this point with SMO, I'm simply excited about a free-roaming Mario game on modern hardware and set in atypically quirky stages. Really, that's about all we know about it.

I get the design distinction being made, but does anybody know what the words say? I'm curious what Nintendo calls the different approaches.

The katakana on the top one says "course clear." I guess it's because the areas are more linear?

The Super Mario Odyssey logo drives me crazy. "Odyssey" is going in a totally different direction than "Super Mario" and it just looks like a mess.

Top is Course Clear, the bottom says something about box worlds. Kind of interesting that Galaxy 1 and 2 are in the Course Clear group, because I still thought they were more like Mario 64 and Sunshine. But they're also being really clear with how Mario Odyssey will play.

^ It might be because, as I recall from SMG1, each objective was self-contained. Like, you couldn't get a different star once you started out on a certain course like you could with SM64, or get multiple stars in a single go. At least, that's what I think I remember?

Stars in SMG1 and 2 are built to be obtained on a specific course and breaking out of them without glitches is a no go. They reuse objects and planetoids but if you pick a star its sling stars are linearly configured to take you only to the one you picked. SMG has more illusory freedom than 3D Land or World, but realistically it was more philosophically similar to them than its predecessors.
