Man, I don't know if I like having to pay extra for FM versions of the songs.

Then again, I definitely didn't buy any of the DLC for EMD or Untold 2 (the only thing I might have paid for is the Highlander class, and since I got to download it when it was free...) so if Atlus wants its fans to buy DLC, that's one way to go at it.

I would also buy DLC for more covered portraits for half the female classes, too. I mean, look at the Reaper's designs.

Would definitely buy this DLC day one. The FM tracks just jam way harder than the symphonic versions, they're part of EO's soul.

I've got this preordered and am counting down the days. The FM versions are going to be dope, but I'd like to know how much they'll cost, and would also like to hear the orchestrated versions first. This DLC seems perfectly suited to a second play through or a New Game +.

Eh, who am I kidding. I'll probably get the DLC day one.

You can't come soon enough, day one.

Old news is so awesome but the official site has shown all the classes for the initial races and a slew of alt colors.

I like how you can set eye color independently from each other but many portraits only show one eye. :scumbageo5

And I'm totally buying the FM ost; just try n stop me.

But they balance that out by having the other female bunny girl have less clothes than a Dark Hunter ... I don't know where I was going with that.

Either way a familiar face shows up:

Protector-gal just can't stay away from the series it seems, now back to carrying a shield.
Guess her portrait (and among others) is part of the paid dlc thing the game has going on... nope, still can't stop me from consumer whoring myself

Also here will be two faces we'll likely be seeing often in the game, so might as well get used to seeing them.
... inn and bar ladies ipresume.

A few other NPCs are found here: http://www.4gamer.net/games/282/G028286/20160623004/

I am stoked that the Cestus is rocking only one glove, Art Jimmerson style.

Demo has been surprise released on the Japanese eShop today, and I'm on a business trip for the next few nights!

But did I bring my 3DS with me? Of course not!

Did I bring my Vita? Of course!

Stupid lousy Vita.

They announced the demo (and pre-downloading the full game) back on July 8th.

I wish I could go back in time and let you know so that you could have it on your trip. I feel your pain though. I did download it because I knew it was coming, but I should under no circumstances start playing it soon...

I appreciate your kindness, estragon, but please download and play the darn thing right away. It was only a surprise to me. My fault for not paying attention.

Play that demo extra hard. For the both of us.

So I've been poking away at the demo, and it's just hit me that this is my first time playing an EO game at launch. With all the other games in the series, I've had terrible indecision paralysis, because I just get stuck reading people's guides and tips online, and fretting over optimum party builds. None of that stuff exists yet for EO5, and it's refreshing to be able to experiment and just enjoy myself.

So far, Necromancer seems like it's going to be a lot of fun. Hawk, too, but maybe not during the early game.

I'm really digging the demo though! Can't wait for Thursday...

I'm getting a bit worried that we haven't heard a peep yet. I hope Untold 2's mediocre sales didn't kill this game.

I'm overwhelmed by the meaningless cosmetic character customization options.

I've tried to start the demo two times "just to set up a party." In most EO games, that would mean lying to myself and playing for a couple hours through the early dungeon. Here, both times I gave up, unable to register a single character, paralyzed by too many choices. I know I could just use the default color palette and keep voices off, but I want to customize them because I can.

I think I'm going to need to set aside a lot of time to get started...

You don't?

Even with the limited options of the previous EO games, much of my time with the games is still done before you step out onto the first floor. New options only means more time wasted glued to making characters.

It is still too bad clothes is still static.

Yeah, EO3 and 4 had me remaking teams a dozen times. 4 even had me restart the game a bunch of times to remake the teams after a few hours trying each combination out.

So I fully expect EO5 to take me at least a week to settle on a team.

GOOD NEWS. You can totally change your characters' colors, names, and even voices at any time during the game, without penalty. Portraits too, possibly, though I'm not sure about that last one.

Oh, thank god. This changes everything. I know what portraits I want, so I can fiddle with the other stuff later.

Cool!

And that's good, because I checked, and portraits cannot be changed.

I could never play through the whole game in Japanese, but I'm in love with this character creator and now I'm really looking forward to it in English.

Yeah, I really hope this game gets a decent localization. During the dungeon exploration phase, there appears to be a lot more flavour text than there has been in previous instalments in the series.

And I don't mean characters chatting with one another, like the remakes of EO1 and EO2. Rather, little bite-sized "adventure points" pop up here and there, and more emphasis is placed on world-building.

Oh, one other thing (from the Famitsu review): There is no airship or sailing this time around! No overworld to explore. Just floor after floor of pure dungeon-crawling. This will delight most longtime series fans, I think, though some folks may be disappointed.

I think it will get one, Etrian Odyssey IV sold well didn't it?

I just beat EO2U myself and now I'm already thirsty for more.

I dipped a toe into the first floor yesterday. I love all of the classes too much. It's going to be tough to settle on a group of five.

I like how this game gives two main development paths for each class. My guess is that there will be no subclassing here. A similar effect to subclassing will instead come from your choice of specializations. (For example, the ranger type class has a hawk focused DPS specialty or a dog focused healing/support+bind specialty.)

The website emphasizes that at some point you can (=have to) choose which set of mutually exclusive skills you want, so each class comes in two distinct varieties.

Skill specialization sounds so much more appealing to me than subclassing does. Subclassing isn't a bad mechanic, it's pretty fun honestly, but I've never personally found it super engaging outside of figuring out what passives best fit the main class because skill points are spread thin enough as is. Having to decide between two hyper focused sections of the skill tree that prop up the core of the class sounds like a good way to expand on the class identity and reduce clutter.

Two things I like about character creation:

(1) In addition to 4 portraits with 4 alternate costume color variants that you can then tweak skin/hair/eyes/voice of in detail, for any class portrait you can also just pick the generic male/female portrait of that class's race instead. So, for example, if you think every Reaper portrait looks too stupid to stare at for the full run of an EO game, you can select one of these guys to be your status inflicting bondage goth:

(2) There is no "gender" to portraits, so you can mix any portrait you want with any voice you want.
