Not at all. That's called "hey so we know that we kind of made these games difficult, if we call it standard people will overwhelmingly pick it anyway and then complain the game is too hard and (this is important) not buy any other games in the series"

Does the game offer any context for the choice? I'm fine with it provided that the in-game description says something like "Advanced mode is intended for existing fans that have played previous EO games", instead of "TRUE DOOM MURDER-HEADS ONLY" or some-such.

Yes it does. In the demo it says something like "Advanced is for players who enjoy a challenge."

I didn't say it was Bad. I'm not trying to imply anything, or say that Atlus shouldn't accommodate players of all skill ranges.

Hrm. That's not the framing that I would prefer. That's pretty generic. When I finally get around to playing this in a few years time, I have no doubt that I'm going to see this choice, panic, and then coming running to here to ask which option I should pick, because, to me, that's a much less useful descriptor than relating it to previous games. I mean, I think it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to think that the other difficulty is the default and that "a challenge" means sadistic fuckery, in EO terms.

When you select one of the difficulty settings, it gives you additional clarification and then allows you to back out if you don't like what you hear. If you select Advanced, it says something about how this is the difficulty of the classic EO games, which is why I chose it. It's a little weird that they hide the detailed descriptions behind that extra button press, but the required info is all there.

I don't wanna jump the gun, I have only played the demo thus far, but my view on that one's optimistic.

I would take a look at the Pugilists if you want a buff male.

I made a Pugilist named Alex, after Alex from Street Fighter 3, because he had lots of muscles and I could make his hair blonde.

I made a pugilist named Jotaro (of the Joestar guild), because Atlus games can never have too many Jojo references.

Hmm, maybe the guild should have been named SPEEDWAGON instead...

Oh this is out soon. Need to get on that-there demo, then.

The DLC listings weren't too clear to me - they're extra classes, or outfits/appearances, or?

They’re just skins of the three EO mascot characters, I think.

Huh, how would that work? Any class can use the skin, I assume?

Yeah, I presume it works like the alternate racial skins.

I wish I had thought of this. Nice.

At any rate, my Pugilist is named Vega. Claws, baby!

What do the big gun tanks lose out on by being put on the front line? I have like 5 classes I wanna use who are backline and only 1 for the frontline, so was gonna pur a guntankheavything on the front if that works.

I mean, in theory, it means they take more damage from attacks.

But, well, they're already tanks, so that's arguably fine.

My predicament was the opposite, where most of the classes I wanted liked the front line, so I had to backrow them.

Yeah, that was all I could think of, thanks. I've messed around with binds and chasing attacks in the past and I'm not really a huge fan of either, so my frontline choices were limited this time around. Are there the usual unlocked-later classes? May have to swap the dragoon out if there's anything else on offer for the front row.

As far as I'm aware, no. At the very least, all the classes Kalir listed in his write-up a couple months ago are all initial classes.

I was pretty confused about Dragoons having no downside to being in the front row. I don't really understand that class anyway. I suppose the idea is you can back row them and use Line Guard for your squishes without sacrificing attack power.

Yeah, Gunmount lets you maintain line defense for one turn at lower TP cost than actually throwing a second Line Guard up. You're meant to go on the offensive with a Dragoon. It's more efficient than simply turtling up.

Etrian Odyssey III's Hoplite was pretty similar - they use spears and have several moves that are row-dependent, so they can function in either row depending on your party setup. I like having that extra strategic decision to make, as opposed to a class that should only ever be in one row.

But then can't Line Guard be cast on any line, even if the Dragoon isn't in it? That means it makes sense to stick the Dragoon on the front line and use LG on the back line, so three squishies get the defensive boost, surely.

Enemy targeting favors the front line, though.

Or both rows at once if you sub-class Ninja and clone them!

I'd still mostly use it for backline just because front line tend to be able to take more hits. Depends on who you have up there though I guess.
