Finally, one of these animated-to-live-action Disney remakes I'm actually interested in. I'm aware a lot of that has to do with this being a Burton joint.

What.

I mean it doesn't look terrible but I was not really expecting that.

If the pink elephants sequence is in it should be a trip, at least. Also it better have the crows song.

This is one of those things so incredibly implausible that I could only believe it was a fake idea tossed about by, at best, the youngest and most sarcastic of the board of execs of disney

although

it at least has one over the PT Barnum movie in that it won't be pretending to be based on a true story
it's also clearly not pretending to be anything but based on the recent fake PT Barnum movie

Well, on the bright side, Tim Burton doesn't have a history of putting black stereotypes in his movies?

Crap, yeah, that bit was probably way more racist than I'm remembering, huh?

*looks up some criticism*

Hmm. Debatable, but you'd have to tread really carefully in a remake, and... *reads Google's link*. Welp.

I don't know what to expect here, but this is a striking trailer.

I'm intrigued by THUMPER being re-envisioned as a work of visual filmmaking, but the chainsaw fight at the end was gilding the lily. I have seen too many similar things in too many works of entertainment, my reaction of "whoa-ho, awesome" losing its passion a bit more with each instance until now the revving of that engine is just the sound of passing through a gateway into the realm of cliche. Closing with that scene hurt the earlier sense of SUCH A SINGULAR VISION.

Find a new non-weapon for a character to use as a weapon, pulp entertainers of the world! Because I'm done with those! Checked right out!

I've been to Home Depot!

I know there's other stuff!

You feel the doubt, you know it's true, you lash out in defensive anger at it, like a chainsaw-katana swung at Nichola Cage giving the performance of a lifetime.

Pulp entertainment needs ten years without chainsaws, give it a chance to breathe, dabble in other interests, prove that it's capable of getting by without them. Resident Evil 7 had a man with a chainsaw fighting another man with a giant pair of scissors made out of two chainsaw, that makes for a nice bookend. Now, let the fields of chainsaws lie fallow for a few seasons, lulled to hibernation by their own threatening hum. Then, there can be a movie about a guy who briskly walks around on chainsaw stilts and steps on people to kill them.

Perhaps a return to the heady days of gunkata?

Or perhaps fencing with missiles?

You can pretty much drop a hedge trimmer in directly to any chainsaw-based scene, but a truly creative director could make pure movie gold by employing a belt sander.

In the Bruce Lee movie "The Big Boss," several fight scenes take place in an ice factory, but the only ice tool that gets used in any of them are the tongs. We must avenge this slight.

Why don't we swap those with Blendtecs? Then they can use some form of "will X blend" in their out of place one-liners.

This discussion of improvised implements made me think of the lawnmower scene form Peter Jackson's Dead Alive (a.k.a. Braindead), which would be hard to top honestly (spoilered for massive gore):

When the first Lord of the Rings movie was about to come out a group of my friends decided to watch what we could of Jackson's movies; The Frightners (Good), Dead Alive (Gory), Meet the Feebles (Weird), Bad Taste (Bad).

This was attached to my showing of Mission: Impossible: Fallout: Now: With: Superman's: Mustache.

I like the realization of the cyborg bodies (Zapan and the Berserker look awesome, and I imagine that's Makaku in that mohawk.) I like the look of the Junkyard, even if it looks a bit too "generic dirt" rather than "generic neon." Alita's eyes are STILL disconcerting, and Hugo looks less like a street rat and more like he just stepped out of his boy band tour bus, but, since this is still just a trailer, my only real concern is how utterly bland it makes the plot sound. The opening narration is uber-cliche, and making Tiphares (?) the active bad guys instead of just an unattainable, uncaring goal reduces the complexity of its role and diminishes the philosophical weight of Alita's fights against her much more personal rivals. Battle Angel's "Who Am I" central thesis isn't about missing identity, but what identity means in a world where transhumanism is the natural order.

I think it looks fine. I also have nothing to compare it to; I don't watch anime, read manga, and I'm only familiar with Battle Angel Alita in the sense that I've heard other geeks talk about it. I know the title and almost nothing else, even less than I did about Ghost in the Shell (which I thought was a bit empty but ultimately fine, a diet Blade Runner limping along.)

Re: Chainsaws

In its defense it appeared to be at least 10 feet long.

Have not seen that model at Lowe's

There's a new Venom trailer.

There's also this wonderful response to it.
