I'll be rooting for England... I guess?

I used to follow English club football way back when and still have a fondness for some of the teams.

I'm still kind of bummed that neither the US or Italy managed to qualify. I certainly never expect the US to field a winning team but they always tend to be fun to watch. Italy was also a favorite of mine both before and after their 2006 win. I still find it surprising they didn't manage to qualify this year, which hasn't happened since 1958.

As for who will win... I haven't done enough research but based on the groups and past performance... probably Germany?

I'm probably not going to pretend I care about a world cup without the US in it.

I rarely ever root for a team to start with including USA. Just individual games at least through the group round.

I'm for Germany and secondarily Japan, as per my usual. Definitely weird have a World Cup without Italy or the Netherlands, nevermind the US.

I usually end up "watching" most of the cup just by following FIFA's event feeds, with exceptions for important matches if they can be arranged. But I don't even have cable so options are limited. Though if Conni's home I'm sure she'll dig up feeds for the Germany matches.

Bumping this partly just to remind myself that things are starting soon. Group stage is basically the second half of this month, knockouts start on the 30th and run through the first half of July.

Anybody looking forward to anything in particular? It'll be fun to see if Iceland can keep winning things. Or if Egypt can beat Russia at home, that'd be delicious. Or if Morocco can score some goals. Plenty of fun underdogs with this year's line-up. Beyond that I'll just be keeping an eye on my usual faves I guess.

Though man, I've been out of the loop. At this point I only recognize like half a dozen players on Germany's squad, basically the 28/29-and-up crowd; never seen the new kids in action.

I am bummed that Saudi and Iran are in different groups, because that match would be all the way live and neither is likely to advance out of the group stage. Otherwise I am pulling for Panama because a good friend's family is from there.

Russia has the big kickball tournament this year!? How many signed TaTu albums did Putin have to give FIFA for them to overlook all the democracy meddling and Assad enabling?

I'm rooting for Mexico, so I'm glad to see they've got a pretty good chance of being the #2 team out of their group, barring Swedish shenanigans (although Sweden and/or Denmark lucking through would be fun for ancestral homeland reasons).

FIFA has no gag reflex. The Russia bid is nothing compared to the Qatar bid for 2022.

Yeah, FIFA is a bottomless morass of corruption basically. They made a few desultory attempts at cleaning house recently, but I think that was after both of these next two incredibly stupid bids had gone through.

Deciding whether to watch the official stream of the opening ceremony (which have never been as lavish or interesting as the Olympics) and then taking a break until Sunday's Mex/Germany game. I'm not feeling very inclined to watching anything hosted or sponsored by Russia at present time.

I've been wrestling with that myself and I decided that this only comes every four years, and Trump and Putin have already ruined so much, I refuse to let them ruin my enjoyment of the biggest sporting event in the world.

I made the argument to my wife that she should drop Facebook because it is corrupt and immoral. She suggested FIFA was the same. A deal was struck: no Facebook for her, no World Cup for me. The world is a little better place.

We'll see if it lasts.

Welp, Russia with the first goal of the tourney.
Edit: and the next two. Guess there's something to that home field advantage.

KSA is in the just happy to be here crowd. If Russia does this to Uruguay we can start talking about fixes.

trust that if the saudis could outsource to/enslave competent players from the developing world, they would, but the Cup doesn't work that way.

España vs Portugal was a much better game. Amazing goals, too.

The good news about Russia hosting the tournament is that the host country never actually benefits from hosting the tournament

Yeah, I was out of the house but I just looked through a recap and watched the highlights. Looked like an exciting match all the way.

I kept telling everyone who would listen today that whoever won ESP/POR would win it all and now I look like an idiot.

Fuck you Ronaldo.

It was amazing and a tie really was the most appropriate result.

I watched the Telemundo stream at the office (half the office WAS watching it, it's a slow day) and I'm going to watch the repeat later today. The screams of "GOOOOOOOOOOOOL!" brought me to my nostalgic happy place.

I'm going to have to watch the repeat of tomorrow's games on Univision, though. France/Australia at 5:30 EST is not something I'm getting out of bed for. Neither is Argentina/Iceland at 8:30. And I forget who plays at 11:30, but I'm already booked for Incredibles 2 at that time.

I'm afraid a combination of weekend shopping and Pokemon Go Community Day are going to take precedence over tomorrow's matches. (Noon is Peru/Denmark fyi.) I'll be back on Sunday for Germany vs Mexico though.
