I finally got to check out the first trade for Sonic, and -- surprise-- I rather like it!

One thing I noticed is that Sonic himself feels very different, more free-spirited.

I just hope the Go-Bots series doesn't go full drama. I mean you've got characters named Space-C and Fitor. I'm not asking for a return of the HB shenanigans but at same time, no G2 revamp plz.

As I've said before, it's by Tom Scioli.

It will be exactly what you are not prepared for.

so guys

If I were, hypothetically, interested in reading all of the excitingly queer TF stuff, but have zero nostalgia or knowledge of the lore for that particular franchise, where would I start?

I want to say it’s a larger component of IDWs Robots in Disguise comic, but I’m not 100% certain of that.

I thought it was more of a Lost Light/MTMTE thing?

You’re probably right; I could never keep straight which line had the Lost Light in it.

THE SHORT ANSWER:
Start with "The Death of Optimus Prime" one-shot, then proceed to "More Than Meets The Eye" 1~55, followed by "Lost Light," which will end this year. At some point, probably read "The Last Stand of the Wreckers" mini and the "Chaos Theory" story from the 2009 ongoing as they contain some background to stories that occur in the ongoings.

THE LONG ANSWER:
Here is a reading guide I made for a friend a while back, including suggestions one what to read or skip, and multiple possible jumping-on points. "Phase 2" (on the second sheet) contains the stories you are looking for.

Phase 2 does stand on the foundations of about 7 years worth of comics, BUT the MTMTE/Lost Light stories focus heavily on characters that the author either created specifically for his own stories, had very little previous characterization, or gained their now well-known voice and characteristics through these stories.

You may wish to return to some of the older stories as you go; and some of the other concurrent stories (the non-James Roberts ones, particularly the "Windblade" and "Til All Are One" stories written by Mairghread Scott) have strong LGBT themes as well.

Good luck!

I really wish I could justify double-dipping on that just for the Movie Adaptation they added to that edition.

It’s one of the best damn comics published this decade.

Ehh the Movie Adaptation isn't as good as I was expecting; it's got some nice panels but overall it doesn't add much to the main series other than Scarlett becoming a headmaster for Optimus Prime.

Just finished the first Micronauts trade yesterday, and I liked it! More than I was expecting to going in, as I know so very little about them.

Been catching up on Sonic as well, which is so... perfect.

And catching up on Transformers, of course, which remains a chore in how they're set up and trying to suss out a reading order. I think the one I'm on now is called "Redemption."

Does anyone know what's up with The Infinite Loop? I want to read it, but I'd prefer to get the hardcover, which I believe covers both of the softcover volumes' material. IDW's site says the hardcover came out this summer and is now out of print, but amazon has it release dated for January of 2035 and I can't find any photos or video of the book as a physical object. The Jem and the Holograms hardcovers are in the same boat, too. The first one came out, and even got a con-exclusive alt cover, but the follow-ups are on indefinite hiatus.

Thundercracker, human film nerd is possibly the best recharacterization in a continuity filled with incredible recharacterizations. Unfortunately he's also probably the least likely to stick to future iterations of the character.

On the other hand, His only previous characterization for the preceding 30 years was “blue airplane” so it’s not like there’s a heck of a lot else to fall back on.

IDW was the first to really explore what seemed to be throwaway character details in the original Tech specs.
