Default The Inaugural Talking Time Game Jam!

Ok, well let's see if we can do this! Welcome to the Talking Time Game Jam! What is a Game Jam you say?

Quote:
A game jam is a gathering of game developers for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating one or more games within a short span of time, usually ranging between 24 and 48 hours. Game developers are generally made up of programmers, game designers, artists, and others in game development-related fields.
If we were doing this in person that time might make sense. But, we're not so we're going to be doing it over the next two weeks from tomorrow, April 28, to midnight May 11.

What are the rules? Simple:

1) Create/adapt a character or story based on the theme
2) Make a game between April 28 and May 11
3) Submit it here

GAMES WILL BE RATED ON:

Graphics / Sound / Fun / Polish
Staying true to the theme
Most innovative use of the theme

I think that's it! If you have questions ask them here and I'll put a FAQ up in the second post!

Go get creating!

Oh, wait you need to know the theme, don't you?

The theme is "Persistence"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quote:
1. Wait, we're rating the games?
Participants in the Jam will vote on games entered based on the previously mentioned criteria. From this a "best" will be picked from each area and for the theme.

Quote:
2. Is this is a team thing or solo?
Either! Feel free to use the thread to find a team/people to work with

Thanks for spearheading this! I come with QUESTIONS:

1. Wait, we're rating the games? Are we talking, like, a pick for "best" in each category, or is every game going through some sort of judging process? Because I really don't want to feel like I'm competing with anyone here. I'd feel pretty rotten if something that people put together for fun ended up at the bottom of some ranking.

2. We never established whether this is a team thing or solo. Are people just grouping up as they wish?

Oh weird, I was just messing with game maker again. I've never had the stick-to-itiveness to make anything but a pre-packaged tutorial game before, I'll have to see how things start shaping up in the next days.

I was going to let people talk in here. But if a speadsheet works better feel free to make one and I'll put it in the FAQ post

That's cool. I'm up for creating graphics or programming depending on the project. Otherwise, I'll just make something on my own.

I thought I responded to this?

Anyway, I am happy to work with a partner and offer my programming know-how (graphics and sounds, not so much my strong suit). And I probably will need to be working with someone to motivate me to do stuff.

So yes, who wants a game-making pal?

I'm really curious to see what people come up with, given the theme. Persistence to me screams "attempting to do something over and over and over again" which sounds automatically tedious. I might be a boring and/or thoroughly uncreative person, though.
I guess there's also the idea of "something remaining seemingly indefinitely"

Someone should make a game based on The Persistence of Memory!

I'm available for graphics work, title screens etc. I can do pixely stuff, best suited to superflat/cartoony style. I'm better at executing orders than coming up with ideas.

Okay, I did some messing around last night in Game Maker and Graphics Gale, and some planning on the bus today to make a really pared down version of a really pared down version of a game I want to make.

So I guess I'm in? It's based on the hunting minigame from Oregon trail, as an exercise in making a 2D isometric action game to build on later. It's single-screen, stationary avatar + target cursor, randomly spawning targets. I'll probably have decently painted backgrounds, but the characters are going to be in 4x4 chunky-pixels style (using a 30x30 design for a 120x120 sprite, can upgrade later) with like 2 frames of animation and no perspective (so I don't have to draw separate front/back).

I feel like I need help with sound effects and scripting. If anyone has experience with scripting in Game Maker Studio, and wants to help, please let me know.

Okay, I made about 5 in-progress/placeholder assets and I'm whipping up a few more tonight. My hope is to have something broken that moves in vaguely the ways I need by the end of the week here.

Anyone else making some progress?

Have a couple of ideas for a game and a couple of meatspace ideas on how to implement them but I think I'm reaching beyond my grasp here...

As far as using music goes...can we use preexisting songs from wherever for the sake of this project (though credited, of course), or must the music and sound be all original and home-made as well? I've got some musical cues that I feel would work well, but wanted to check before I commit to 'em.

Yeah, I took a chainsaw to my original concept and I'm still wondering if I'll be able to cram it all in get it to function at all. I've only made some suuuper basic stuff before this.

I'm going to try and make a whack a mole game from scratch! It'll be mostly to see if I can even do it.

I doubt I'll be able to complete anything within the timeframe for the jam as this week and the next are incredibly busy for me, but I will take the theme to heart and persist in working on something, just to see what I can make.

If anyone's looking for sound effect resources, this little gadget is a fun way to make 8-bit noises. You can also find some decent royalty-free sound effects here.
