Well crap, here comes the only thing that could get me to buy Magic cards again.

(I always figured it'd be "Unleashed" though)

It's time for me to tap some blue mana and ask a meta Magic question.

What's the best way to sell off old Magic cards? There's this dude at work who apparently has a bunch of cards that he collected ten years ago, and he's looking to sell them (ideally as a single lot so he doesn't have to bother sorting through them.) I'm assuming that he could make more money by identifying which cards (if any) are likely to have some value to collectors and selling them individually but I'm not sure how he'd go about a) identifying which cards are worth selling individually and b) how he'd go about finding potential buyers for them. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance!

I'm wondering if he can take his huge lot into a store and then have the people there identify for him which cards would be valuable to sell individually, but I don't really know the etiquette for doing that if you're also not intending to sell the cards to that store in the first place (which I'm assuming you'd make more money selling them to a person and not a store).

Well, if it were me, I'd sort the cards by set, then check somewhere like MTGGoldfish to see if any of the cards have value. Not just the rares, either. You'd be surprised how much some commons go for these days.

If he's looking to maximize the payout, he should probably try to sell the money cards as playsets (sets of four) on eBay, with an appropriate price range, and just give the rest of the chaff away.

If he just wants to get rid of them, he could take them to a game store and have them take the cards off his hands for either cash or store credit, but that's dependent on the store's need for those cards.

Thanks! I hadn't known about MTGGoldfish, or about selling cards in sets (is four the maximum number of copies of a single card you can include in a deck these days?) Without knowing more about this dude's Magic situation, I'm not sure how plausible it is that he'll have multiples of any given money card to sell, but this gives me enough information so I can suggest an alternative to just bringing the cards to some random local game store or selling them all as a single arbitrarily-priced lot on Craigslist or whatever.

Büge's suggestions are good for how to best maximize value. I have one comment on how to find value.

In order to import multiple cards at a time, MTGGoldfish requires a premium account. Since I assume your friend doesn't want to spend money, I would suggest deckbox (I have used them for two years now). Deckbox let's you import a file containing your cards either in CSV format (if your friend has put their cards into a spreadsheet), or in simple [Amount] [Card Name] format, e.g.,

4 Simian Spirit Guide
2 Sleight of Hand
3 Stone Rain

Just saw this news while looking up TT posts on Neverwinter.

On the one hand, I'm sure that the game will have plenty of ludicrously overpriced DLC and Pay To Win (FASTER) stuff to keep those free to play servers running and new content coming, just like Neverwinter! But on the other hand, I'm sure the game will have plenty of nice colorful scenery porn and visual designs, and as someone who loves the art and lore of Magic: The Gathering more than playing the actual card game, I'll probably put dozens of hours into it if/when the PS4 port hits. Just like Neverwinter...

I wonder if/how that game's development was affected by WotC's recent-ish statement that it turns out the Gatewatch doesn't seem to be very well-liked by people? Then again, maybe it'd work better in an MMO format.

Since I heard Magic Duels was being discontinued, I reinstalled it to see if they ever fixed it up or anything... Nope, it's still an unbelievably great version of virtual Magic ruined by free-to-play bottlenecks. Shrugging dude emoticon.

I went to GP Toronto today. I got an autographed playmat from Steve Argyle and one from rk post, which was very nice. I ran into some old friends, one of whom I hadn't seen since high school(!) and who now has two kids(!!), and we played an on-demand game of Commander (I played my Jaya Ballard, Task Mage deck). I didn't win, but I was elected the MVP of the match. I got eight booster packs with the points that I got from that, and I pulled a Neheb the Eternal and a Scarab God out of them.

It was a good day.

It's okay... I mean there's some good individual cards throughout the decks, but the decks in their entirety don't exactly fill my Plague Boiler with counters.

Vampires was my original Tribal, and it's still (not-so) secretly my favorite.

I couldn't be more ecstatic if I tried. Wait wait, no, if there was some kind of Dinosaur-Vampire combo themed Commander deck, maybe ...
