Default It’s a “Comic” Strip... get it? The Marvel TV Thread

It was less than a season ago that the only Marvel show on tv (unless you count cartoons) was Agents of Shield. And now there’s that, and also the Netflix shows, and Runaways, and Legion, and Inhumans and... whatever that Hellions-focused one is called. I forget. Plus the afore-mentioned cartoons which I don’t think ever have been brought up in any significant capacity.

So I says to myself “Octo, you better make a thread to group all these things together before the thread-shortage becomes a problem! And you better make sure you use one of the worst thread titles in the history of the forum for a sense of synchronicity!”

True story!

So anyway; new season of Agents of Shield starts tomorrow; and I am super excited to see how effectively they can follow up the story of a skeleton who punches ghosts that segued into Magical Terminator Builds The Matrix.

The last time there was only one Marvel live-action show putting out new episodes was 2014.

I assume Octo is including the Netflix affairs.

And I guess Hulu has also become a thing?

...

So like, did the Inhumans crash and burn or... what even happened with that?

Didn't even manage to crash and burn really. More like sudden total existence failure.

Nobody’s cared about the Inhumans since the mid-60s. Don’t see why we’d break that streak.

Runaways is streets ahead. (well, it’s fine, like all things; bad media is no longer produced) Not much of a surprise considering The OC was the finest teen show last decade.

Weakest part is Molly, who isn’t as young as she is in the comics, but sometimes seems to have dialogue as if she is, and act kinda badly regardless.

Much like Riverdale, great parents, too. This show wisely takes the opportunity to develop them more, because Runaways: the comic gets real bad once they die and there’s no reason for the teens to keep Running Away together.

I caught up on Runaways (9 episodes, no running away yet) this afternoon while cleaning my apartment. It took me too long to adjust to what this show is instead of watching for what I expected it to be. I expected it to be an adaptation of the comic, but it takes the characters and set up and tells an almost entirely different story. As a big fan of the comic, albeit one who hasn't read the issues in years, I never really warmed to the show. It plays down all the superhero stuff for the teenage drama stuff. Runaways is a show where a girl can telepathically control a dinosaur and in 9 episodes they have no adventures. Karolina doesn't even find out she can fly for like 7 episodes and has not been seen flying since that revelation. The fantastic stuff feels like the extraneous crap the makers had to put in to get their teen drama green-lit, but that is the stuff I came to see. This show is not for me.

One last post complaining about Runaways. While SPOILERS the kids actually run away in the last episode, everything else about the finale is laughably terrible. Before this episode, I had some faith that this show, for all my complaints, was going somewhere. After watching the finale, I'm sure it is not and that the showrunners don't have any sort of plan. Old Lace shows up to the big standoff cliffhanger, but is promptly shot with a tranquilizer gun that someone has for some reason, because while the show can have a dinosaur, it can't be allowed to do anything. Nico and Karolina might have feelings for each other, something that would be easier to accept if they had interacted at some point in the previous 9 episodes, aside from being in group scenes. To be clear, its not that I don't like the development; I just don't think they did any developing. The kids get disguises that do nothing to hide their identities since they look just like their other clothes. Gert has a tearful goodbye scene with Old Lace, where the dinosaur is finally named, because they stupidly decide they don't need a pet dinosaur. 15 minutes later Old Lace is back and they just accept it, making the earlier scene completely pointless.

The first nine episodes was the show spinning it wheels, the last episode is the show getting dizzy from spinning and falling down. (I realize the metaphors don't quite match.)

Yeah it seemed to get worse as it kept going. You didn't mention how much screen time the parents get, which is: an insane amount of screen time.

I love the parents and don’t get the fucking dinosaur’s appeal. Fuck a dinosaur! I agree its dis- and reappearance seemed pointless. (aside from budgetary concerns)

The final episode “kids vs. parents” fights was terrible. It was truly just like kids smashing their toys against each other, making sounds, without the cuteness of actual children.

Is this where we'd talk about The Gifted? Is there another thread for that?

Because I just finished up The Gifted and while it wasn't bad, I'm not sure they made the show they thought they made. I think at the end, when Polaris joins the Hellfire Club and takes about half of the good guys with her, viewers are supposed to see it as some kind of tragedy, like they are all making a mistake. I know the other good guys treat it as such, which makes me think they were paying about as much attention as me while I had the show on in the background while doing homework. The potential future where humanity is trying to exterminate mutants is not really a potential future, but the present that the show spent 13 episodes showing us.

I kind of liked some of the good guys, like Blink and Thunderbird and Polaris, and I wish they had something to do other than argue with each other. I also hope the second season has a lot more of the series true heroes, the Stepford Cuckoos, manipulating the bumbling good guys into actually accomplishing things.

I like that it's a show about unintended consequences and people playing with the cards they were dealt. It's not amazing but it's more successful than most of actual Marvel's shows.

I finally caught up with Legion in time for season 2. It's mind-blowing to me that an X-men show like this exists. I keep comparing it to David Lynch and Dario Argento but another thing that just occurred to me is that it may be the closest thing to a translation of Bill Sienkewicz's artwork to live-action film that we might ever see. The X-men film franchise has some seriously wonky low points but god damn, I wish the MCU would take more risks like Fox has done with Legion and Logan; really step outside of that Marvel Braintrust style. They kind of started to with Daredevil, but then like all the rest of the Netflix shows are still basically that same template.

Good to hear!

We rewatched the first episode of Season 1 recently (intending to rewatch the entire season...) and it was just as mind-bending as on the first viewing.
