Alt-Rock Rosalina and Bowsette are dating

I don’t care what Nintendo says, this is canon.

Wow. It's almost like it's own setting, like Oerth or Krynn.

Yep. Capcom's D&D brawlers make a lot more sense in that context, as does Lodoss.

And Final Fantasy. Certainly explains how the traditional heavily armored DnD cleric begat the fragile robed FF1 white mage.

They were called Priests in 1st Edition and weren't heavily armored!

I think the coolest thing is that they used consistent example PCs, which isn't something we had here until 3rd edition came out!

Very interesting. The ones I'm most familiar with are from the Advanced Dungeon & Dragons series. I used to own a bunch of the boxed campaign sets like Dark Sun and Planescape; never used them for an actual game, but I loved the maps, art, and lore.

That is certainly a nice touch! Speaking of 3rd Edition, I've still got a Dungeons & Dragons Clue game starring the 3rd edition crew; box is worn out but everything inside it is still in great condition.

Also speaking of 3rd edition, I heard that the people they had doing art for it weren't happy about having to include a human male fighter in everything, so they constantly put him in situations where he was killed or stoned or whatever. Look up "Dungeons & Dragons Regdar" sometime if you haven't already.

Yeah, 1st edition is pretty much its own thing being a heavily scaled down version of a wargame. 1E Unearthed Arcana basically drags it about halfway to 2E mechanically (aka AD&D), but vanilla 1E is unique in the way it marries shallow customization (no separate race/class choices, few options to customize outside gear options and stat roll variance as this predates point-buy options) with extremely crusty gameplay rules. I believe Japan got 1E D&D about the same time as the old PC versions of Wizardry, Might & Magic, and Ultima were localized there which calcified the way 'western' fantasy was supposed to look for at least a decade.
