Default D&D PEOPLE PLEASE ADVISE ON A GIFT

Hi

My friends who D&D recently got married and I would like to get them a fancy dice box, and or set of fancy dice to go in said box.

I do not know the first thing about D&D, but I do know that they have several characters, and that I don't know enough about them to get anything more "custom". I've been advised that fancy dice are a nice gift to give though.

Does anyone have recommendations for where I can get fancy dice and/or boxes? I have a budget of sorts but since it's a 2 person wedding/christmas gift I can stretch. I ideally need a UK site/producer, but if it's worth it I can tell them to wait for an international order.

If you think there is another D&D gift I could give, please advise!

Thanks!

Well, first idea would be to look at your local gaming stores/hobby stores. Typically if a store sells D&D books as well as board games, they'll have accessories like dice in stock and you can usually see the sets they have.

Yeah a local hobby shop should have plenty of options. There’s tons of dice retailers online too. I bet a UK based one wouldn’t be too hard to find. Heck even Amazon.uk should have a wealth of riches.

As for the dice themselves, you’ll want to chose something that’s asthecially pleasing for you/your giftee. There’s plenty of “premium dice manufacturers” that will happily charge you an arm and a leg for wacky shapes or promises of “perfect weight distribution” but at the end of the day a die is a die. Find something that looks nice over claims of bespokeness.

Yeah, get some nice metal dice and a box to roll them in (don’t want them scratching their gaming table). Checking out a local game shop is a good idea, though I’m sure there are a ton of online retailers. D&D uses a set of 7 dice, and it’s such a dominant game in the tabletop space that those should be the easiest sets to find.

https://www.elderwoodacademy.com/ also has some options for this kind of thing, although it can get pricey depending on how fancy you get. Also it's a US-based company so don't know what shipping costs would look like for you.

Chessex makes tons of sets of polyhedrals in a variety of gorgeous colors for very reasonable prices. Not sure of their availability in the UK, though.

Do you know if they're into painting miniatures? If so, Reaper makes a series of unpainted plastic minis called Bones that are very inexpensive.

Alternatively, if they drink you can get them some Crown Royal bottles with the felt bags. Using that bag to hold your dice is a popular D&D nerd choice.

You can get the bags without buying the liquor, monogrammed too.

As an alternative: grids, back drops for the games, etc. Either blank or with settings printed on. Google up “DnD grid map” and you’ll get a good idea.

This is my brand, but I couldn't for the life of me remember how to spell them and didn't have any dice on hand.

I was given a set of these for my wedding.

They're nice, I haven't had a IRL game since so I haven't had much of a chance to really use them, though.

https://www.elderwoodacademy.com/hex-chest-dice-boxes/

After hours of decicing I think I'm going to get one of these, open style so 2 sets of dice (which I'll get separately) fit.

I know they like LOTR so I think I'll go with the Elvish design, however I don't know SHIT about LOTR to know if that looks good or not. Are any of the other designs on there LOTR related? Does anyone know what the Elvish actually says (I've emailed them to try and find out)? I'd love to get the Purpleheart wood, but I think it would be more in-keeping with the LOTR black/gold style to get a lighter wood. Thoughts?

Oooh. Yeah I don't blame you for wanting to double check that design. LoTR fans, like my dad, can be very picayune about that stuff. I once gave him some Middle Earth Maps and he was pissed at the company that made them for wasting my money.

Thankfully I don't think they'd be so pedantic to care what it says, but it's for my own sake mostly, then I know it's not inscribed with "get deez nutz" in elvish or something. I can tell right away that the centre symbol isn't something seen on LOTR merch anyway, so I'm assuming that's the company initials maybe.

I can't remember exactly what the practice is called, but they're doing this thing that was popular in olden times where you create a single symbol by overlapping all the letters in a name. It's a legit thing, looks like they did it for "hex chest" in that elven style script.

I think it's cool. Can anyone else remember what that type of symbol is called?

I could picture the Black Speech or dwarvish having a phrase for that but not elvish. Or at least the elvish version would sound more flowery and poetic.

The company said it translated roughly to "if you stare long enough into the abyss, it'll stare into you".
