Reminds me of The Tin Drum. It has a scene with eels that has stuck with me for over a decade.

oh yeah one of the eels is a complete intentional ripoff of mathman too, from square one television. probably pretty obvious which one it is now that I've said that

Very neat eels, btw. I like the one in the shape of a "c" staring at his own tail.

I was trying to work on the cover page for the short (7 pages + 1 cover page) in-between-chapters thing for my webcomic last night, and I just could not draw the main character on the big page (and wasted one sheet of watercolor paper).

I tried again this afternoon (on cheaper paper), measured the full height, split the whole thing into 6.25 heads (I'm slowly moving away from realistic proportions for now), and voilà, somehow it all magically appeared on the page, and it looks even better than the small 5 inch sketch I did yesterday (I did change the pose slightly, which made things more interesting).

Being able to fit the characters into a measured template has been something that has blocked me from progressing for quite a while, curiously enough, but I'm starting to get the hand of it.

Now, I need to figure out what I'm going to put in the background...

Oh man, I was trying to find videos of David Gossage (a flute player that I work with) and I rediscovered a series of concert videos I had forgotten about. We recorded them about 7 years ago in an empty theatre for some Quebec TV company, apparently they air the concert every one in a while. I'm on guitar and vocals (and in the thumbnail):

Man, I look so much younger. And thinner (but that's partially because of the messed up aspect ratio that the video was posted in).

Yup! David Gossage and the Celtic Mindwarp, available on iTunes (at least in Canada) and CDBaby. It's creeping up on its 10-year anniversary, which is kind of hard to believe.

I sort of need help from anybody in this forum.
I want to relearn everything about how to make Print Graphic Design, but modernized. Terms, what makes a design good, what not to do, what the trends are.
What books should I look at? Do any books even write about how?

I tried revisting my enormous textbook from college (that I never touched but that's okay because they never enforced reading it) and it was nothing but mini biographies of artists in alphabetical order.

I would make a pinterest account and search for graphic design terms. Like "best 2017 book covers" or something. You'll get a good survey, and you can click through to a lot of results that are going to be like listicles of specific examples. Otherwise you can see if a library in your area has some of the various graphic design annuals.

Biggest fads I've seen of late are designs that look like glitchy polygons, brush lettering with layer masking/blending effects, and art-deco display type.

I'm glad I posted this bc I was struck by an intense urge to belt out this song this evening, and the French paroles were not sufficient to satisfy the desire

I also drew a broccoli. It's more of a mathematical sketch than a graphic one

I've been eating it for lunch at least once a week for a couple of months now, and have been interested by how each successive part is basically the same as the stem it came off of, up until the point at which it turns into flowers.

I think a lot about how you could write functions to render plants, trees, etc. They seem pretty simple once you establish the ground rules, but maybe this has been solved for decades already

Congratulations, you rediscovered fractals!

(I mean that sincerely. It's a good observation! And broccoli and several other plants are classic natural fractals, and yes, it's pretty easy to write algorithms to generate examples of them.)

Are you familiar with romanesco?

You can't rediscover something you already know about.

I did see romanesco while I was googling "fractal broccoli" but there's enough self similarity for me to enjoy this as well

Totally apologize if that "rediscover" came off as patronizing, just didn't know if you were familiar since you didn't use the word in that post. But yeah, you can definitely use fractal algorithms to do auto-generation of all kinds of trees and other natural features for CG scenes.

Any podcasting Tyrants have tips on developing your podcast voice (or is there a thread along these lines)? I'm well into planning one with friends and just did a test recording — I'm far from a lost cause, but could use some work.
