Default Digital Down-Low for 04/14/2017: Cry Ribbit and Let hop the Frogs of War

I don't think anyone can argue that we're right near the middle of April!

PS4 starts the week with Aaero, which appears to be Rez, if Rez was More Star Fox and less Daft Punk. Either way, a spaceship is in a tube with naught but BAD BOTS and EDM for company! EXPLODE FOR MUSIC!

Cosmic Star Heroine is one of several games this week I easily could have given the title spot for, if that decision weren't already made in advance for me. I regret nothing. This one is the newest, highest budgeted game by Zeboyd, makers of Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves the World, as well as half the Penny Arcade games. Their games are notable for being really impressively designed with many concessions made to improve the JRPG formula. This game is notable as it's the first non-licensed release whose writing doesn't make me wish I were illiterate. Or think that the writers are.

This game is pretty much entirely Phantasy Star by way of Chrono Trigger and if you are on Talking Time, that means you are already playing it.

Crawl, uh... looks cool as hell, honestly. A kind of multiplayer Reverse Gauntlet where you control the monsters trying to murd the CRAP out of a player-controlled Dungeon Crawling Hero and, when you succeed, you come back to life and try to finish the crawl yourself. Kind of like Pac-Man Vs. with a touch of Dark Souls.

If anyone else is getting this on PS4, seriously, let me know, I would be completely down with that.

Kero Blaster is the most recent game by Studio Pixel, the Cave Story guy! Instead of being a troid-em-up about little box-bots, this one is a side-scroller shooter that reminds me so very much of the contents of those CD-Roms with a hundred Shareware games from the late 90s. But in a good way. This is one Apogee-ass video game.

You are a Frog who must Kill The Bugs With A Gun. Turn coins into Bigger Guns. Kill All The Bugs! And do it again in New Game + Mode!

This is a great moment in Frog Video Games!

The Sexy Brutale has a wonderful title if nothing else. It seems to be a time-loop murdery mystery where you're trying to figure out 1. Who Keeps Murderin' Peeps in a Murder Casino Mansion (yessss) and 2. Why the same hour keeps repeating. It's more Groundhog Day than Majoras Mask, but damned if I don't love every part of that description!

Yooka-Laylee is the long awaited third Banjo-Kazooie game! Except that it's not actually made by Rare and therefor, for legal reasons, can't actually call itself Banjo Kazooie. Nothing else has changed. Graphcis are nicer then theyw ere on the N64, I guess... Buy the game and you will be able to party like it were 1999 AGAIN! Forever!

Don't miss the day-1 patch to remove the racism-by-proxy!

And the last PS4 game is also a PS3 game, except with more gussying up! Bulletstorm: Full Clip! If I played it before, it left no impact on me whatsoever! I'm fairly certain this is the game where you can earn bonus points if you kick a man into the air and then shoot that same man in the gonads.

If so, I'm not going to lie, that has appeal. But I think I can wait until it inevitably lands in the bargain bin in, say, two months.

NOW FOR THE eSHOP!

And the Switch went ahead and made a big ol' mess of itself by releasing Mr. Shifty, a top-down punch-em-up starring Mr. Shifty a guy who'se good at punching and GREAT at short-range teleportation! Like Nightcrawler, if Nightcrawler just punched the every-loving HELL out of people all the time.

Which I guess he does... so... okay!

The Jack Box Party Pack 3 is a great choice if you need to show off your Switch to large groups of people, but don't have 1-2-Switch or Snipperclips or Bomberman! It's a collection of Jackbox party games, like You Don't Know Jack and probably some other games! I don't know! I know I played the heck out of YDKJ back in the day, however!

The last Switch game is another Neo-Geo port; Samurai Shodown IV, the fourth Showdown for Samurai! I don't have any particular knowledge of this series so I can't claim if this is good news or not! Be weird to start with the fourth if it wasn't well regarded though. Anyway; Punch-em-up where one of the guys has a Dog, who can Dog Punch.

And the 3DS got some stuff too! EMOTIONALLY IMPORTANT STUFF, like Bye Bye Boxboy (which, I'm sorry, I can not help but read with Boddickers voice from Robocop), the third and final game in the heart-pounding Boxboy trilogy.

Make Boxes. Solve Puzzles with Boxes. Save the World from the Looming Menace.

This is Qbbys Last Gleaming Final Hour. Do him proud. Do Us Proud.

And speaking of Simple Geometric Heroes Created by HAL Labs; Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is a gussied up re-release of a mini-game from Kirby Planet Robobot, now featuring Street Pass play, lots more features and quests and also a Free To Play mechanic in that your play-time is restricted with the use of a Stamina Bar and your progress requires Apples, which slowly grow in real-time.

But otherwise, it's a Kirby Boss Rush with RPG elements and that is Right and Good.

Now go away!

I've only played past the intro segments of CSH, but it is pretty good. And also pretty buggy, at least on PC. Nothing major so far, but little things like the game crashing after changing resolution in the settings menu and having to feather the confirm button so you don't speed through text boxes.

The Sexy Brutale looks like someone turned Sleep No More into a video game, which is a bit nutty because Sleep No More is like someone turned a video game into performance art.

I downloaded it to my PS4 but haven't played it yet. Though I am somewhat baffled how a game that's aiming for something along the lines of a SNES look could weigh in at nearly 6 gigabytes.

Last night I was cursing at how difficult the Amakusa fight is in Samurai Shodown IV is. I feel like I'm officially part of the SNK fandom now.

ain't nothing like Mizuki in SamSho 2 though.

except maybe Dio in World Heroes 2 but World Heroes 2 is so un-fun that it is not even fun as ironic masochism.

I'm about 9 worlds in on Bye Bye Boxboy and it is as excellent as you would expect.

It may have been compressed in download and decompressed afterwards.

Speaking of file sizes, I noticed Kero Blaster is only 10.2 MB on PS4.

Uh, if you say so! I like World Heroes 2, although I'll admit that it's not a shining moment in the history of the genre. It's easy for beginners to learn (although not easy to finish) and there's a sense of levity that gives you the impression the designers made it with tongues firmly in cheek. I mean, just look at this win quote from the game's Ken stand-in Fuuma!

Quote:
Duwaaah! Your punches don't hurt, don't tickle, my 90 year old grandmother who's bedridden fights better than you.
(The game barely has enough time to print all that before it transitions to the next match.)

As for cheap SNK bosses, there are so many to choose from, but the ones in King of Fighters are generally pretty bad. Rugal. Orochi. Kryzalid. Zero. They're all a huge pain in the ass. Oddly, the boss in the latest KOF, Verse, is relatively easy, to the point where a really good player could probably beat him with a single character. (Not me, though.)

I wish Cosmic Star Heroine would attempt fewer jokes, but otherwise I'm having a good time with it.

Crawl and the Jackbox Party Pack are both super fun for local multiplayer times. Johnny & I just played Crawl with another friend on Saturday afternoon! They both get the official JBear seal of funtimes.

I haven't been following development, so maybe this has changed, but FYI, I think Crawl is local multiplayer only. It certainly used to be, at any rate. That being said, if you want to arrange a play-date, Johnny and I could probably make that happen!
