Default PlayStation Classic was originally an addon for the SNES Classic.

Ballsy name.

Mostly interested for modding potential, seeing as there's no chance in hell that this thing launches with Skullmonkeys.

Oh yeah, I want this.

Though upon a closer look, it just has basic PSone pads and not DUALSHOCKs. Oh well, aside from Ape Escape requiring them and Metal Gear Solid's rumble gimmicks it's not like they were used for anything too special.

Still hope Metal Gear Solid's one of the 20, though. Also I need at least one Resident Evil on this.

Wow, they're doing a really good imitation of Nintendo.

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic. There's gonna be a lot of junk on this system I don't want, because hey, it's a Playstation, but maybe it'll get hacked and I can squeeze in the games I want. Maybe I'll get really lucky and Intelligent Qube and Bloody Roar 2 will be included by default. How much flash storage do you think we'll get in this system? 32GB? I can't imagine much less if they've got all four Final Fantasy VII discs in there.

So are those real Playstation controllers? Because the impression I get from the pictures is that the ends of the cables have a smaller connector that wouldn't fit in the real system. Maybe it's USB, I don't know.

I bought a PSTV on clearance for the expressed purpose of turning it into a Mini PlayStation a couple of years ago.

It looks the system uses one of those USB phone cables that comes with everything now, so you can probably just plug a phone charger into it or buy a cheap USB plug attachment.

I have already made peace with this. I'm just happy this is a thing at all.

It looks like they're USB, going by the video.

You shouldn't have any! Have you seen the price of a Playstation TV on eBay lately? They're going for big bucks these days... they're like the new Virtual Boy.

But yeah, the PSTV is probably going to be my workaround for classic Playstation goodness. The whole Sony handheld line (PSP, Vita) handles PSOne games remarkably well.

I think this is the most daunting library of them all to narrow down into a curated selection, but one quarter in it seems very well considered. Excited to find out the rest.

If this turns out hackable I will definitely buy one, otherwise my lust for nostalgia things to plug into my tv has been sated

I would expect these also make the cut:

Castlevania SotN
Crash Bandicott (or sequel)
Gran Turismo 2
Metal Gear Solid
PaRappa the Rappa
Resident Evil 2 (or 1)

Twisted Metal 2

Armored Core (or Vengeance)
Colony Wars
Hot Shots Golf
Intelligent Qube
Motortoon Grand Prix
Ridge Racer
Road Rash
Silent Hill
Soul Blade
Street Fighter EX + alpha (longshot)
Suikoden (or 2)

Woah, dang!

I got mine for, like, $30 when they were shoveling them out the door.

Freezing the screen in the video definitely makes me think the controllers are USB. (I brightened this just a touch in Photoshop to see the details better.)

Hopefully we'll be able to pop a couple Bluetooth adapters in there and go wireless. Official accessories that support PS3/4 controllers would be great.

Power adapter looks like it's USB micro, so no bigs. I was originally concerned it might be USB-C, but no, definitely the more common standard.

Pretty sure Tekken 3 never even made it on PSN did it? Kind of a big deal.

R4 without an analog controller is going to be rough.

Looks nice. I'd love another classic SE RPG - Parasite Eve or Xenogears - but FF7 is good enough. If it has Symphony of the Night or Alundra, it's a day one purchase.

Some thoughts now that I've had some time to process the news:

* Obviously it is perfect and small and good and small. Perfect. However...
* $100 is a lot of cash for something like this. People flipped lids over $80 for the Mini SNES. Maybe fancy 3D polygons justify the price point.
* Not DualShock controllers? Seems like a weird choice for a nostalgia point and limits what they can put on here. Maybe they're planning separate analog peripherals, but that feels kinda baity especially with a hundo to drop in.
* The PlayStation's library is so big and diverse that I'm having a hard time conceptualizing what a narrow 20 would entail. Def feels like they're going for broad appeal, as they should, but that means Crash Spyro etc which feels odd considering recent HD remakes and PSN availability etc.
* If it's easily mod-able though than that's a game changer. I recently tried playing BoF4 on my PS2 only to discover it outputs at a resolution my HDTV just won't display. Super frustrating. If this is an easy "make PSX games work on modern TVs" device than it's worth $100 and more.
* Could be smaller.

I can't believe I'm saying this but Jumping Flash! alone is not worth the $100 for me. As for game selection, the ommision of dual shock is going to narrow that field down quite a bit.

This is an even bigger blow to keeping classic games accessible to purchase than the Switch Online service.

PS Archives was amazingly expansive, and it worked on PS3, PSP, and Vita, tied to the same account.

It is super weird to not come with a Dualshock, yeah.

Besides what has already been announced, my guesses for Absolutely On The System, I Would Bet Money On These If I Had Money To Bet:

-Symphony of the Night
-Metal Gear Solid
-Twisted Metal
-Medievil
-Mega Man X4
-Parappa

Though I can't remember if any of the above require an analog stick, so that is another reason I'm not betting lol

Huh, I never owned a PlayStation back in the day, maybe I finally will now? That said, my love for tiny consoles is great, but I also secured myself a cheap PS TV back in the day so I'm not sure I actually need one of these. There may be a handful of games on this that I can't get through PSN, but my library as it stands is already pretty impressive. And man, the decision to go with original controllers instead of DualShocks is just baffling. I think I'd rather have one DualShock in the package than two old school controllers.

Now that I think about Sony's general business model, I'm betting they'll charge a premium to buy a Dual Shock separately.

I'd pay $100+ for a portable box that plays the Wild Arms intro.

Sony was really, really good at this stuff for a while, but all game companies are inching towards the day when games are just streaming ephemera they can snatch away at any moment.

While there's a lot of PSOne games I love and enjoy, I... kinda already have all of them on Vita, and while the majority of them are perfect for portable (like Xenogears or the FFs) I definitely couldn't stand to play them on a big TV anymore (like Xenogears or the FFs). So, glad this is coming out, but I don't think it's for me.

Now, if Vagrant Story is in there, and if it can be modded to include translations of Japan-exclusive games, though...

I don't think this is for me but the continuing popularity of these retro mini consoles gets me hopeful that there will be a mini Saturn. That's a device I would be excited for!

I'd say with it being a stand alone device (no updates from the internet) the chances of someone hacking it are somewhere around 100%.

I keep hoping for a Analogue NT / Super NT style Saturn, but I'm a rare person who still has a ton of Saturn stuff.

If it can be hacked, and more importantly region-free hacked, then sign me the hell up (probably).
