“GOOD LORD WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THERE?!”

“Smash For Nintendo Switch”

“S-SMASH FOR NINTENDO SWITCH?

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR

AT THIS TIME OF DAY

OUTSIDE OF AN E3

LOCALIZED ENTIRELY IN A NINTENDO DIRECT?!”

“…Yes!”

“Can I see gameplay footage?”

“…no”

Apparently if you clean up the silhouettes from the trailer, you get the Original Eight, Ness, Captain Falcon, Peach, Zelda, Sheik, Marth, Bowser, Pit, and Wario.

Notably, it appears that although Link’s design has been updated to reflect BotW, Zelda’s has not; she’s still wearing her TP dress.

I had completely forgotten about that vote. Hmm.

I watched some of the Smash Wii U/3DS trailers with my kids and the hype was strong so I played a few rounds with a 7, 5 and 2 year old. It was like a glimpse of my future and i really liked what I saw

My thoughts in no particular order:

-*your favorite character* could be in it; Nintendo has loosened up in regards to IP and licensing, and it's just a matter of time before they start selling spots in the Smash roster the same way they put BMW in Mariokart and assorted advertising in Splatoon splatfests. The only question: could they get Mike Meyers to record new dialogue?*

-2018, not counting the customary six month delay, right? Although... it did go into development pretty much after the last one wrapped up... Is this the reason Nintendo Online has been delayed so long? Could it really six months away?

*Yes.

If they can't afford Myers, I'm sure they could easily get that other Mike who voices Shrek. Guy does a lot of voice work in video games.

The idea that anyone could see a hellfire-illuminated Mario and think "aw HELL no shit's about to get EPIC" is even more hilarious/depressing

I feel like 64 and Melee struck the right tone in their intros and brief narrative bits; everything since has felt joylessly serious, like Kingdom Hearts

I mean, here's the way I see it: it's employing an extremely dramatic aesthetic of high-stakes big deals, but that is fun. It's not like the scenario is any less manifestly silly. It's not self-important; rather, part of the joy comes from getting caught up in the performative seriousness.

The core analogy of a child play-fighting with toys still holds after 20 years. But in that mode of play, acting out the toys' perspective of the conflict, as far over-the-top as the imagination can take you, is a part of the experience.

Kingdom Hearts is the wrong comparison to make. There's nothing in it that you're expected to follow, no rules to learn. It would be better to look at Kid Icarus Uprising, which, unsurprisingly as it's from the same director, is a stronger expression of this concept. Taken at face value that's a really overcomplicated and super grim story, but in detail it's more about the feeling of experiencing a shocking twist than the scenario that actually changed. The characters rapidly alternate between being entirely committed to the increasingly absurd premise and riffing on it like they're on the Satellite of Love. In this style, seriousness is joyful.

Look, I was pumped as hell at that trailer, but not because giant fireballs give me a boner or how tough and glowering Mario looked. I love the Smash Bros games, and this was a video that said "Hey, new Smash Bros game". Nintendo has cultivated enthusiasm for this series by revealing new games and characters in a particular style. To say that people are excited for the style alone, divorced from their context as commercials for an upcoming product, is disingenuous and maybe a little tone deaf.

Unless there's anything remotely interesting to do in single-player this time around, I'll pass.

Speaking of Darkstalkers, I would be cool with Capcom letting Arc System Works make Darkstalkers 4. Like, the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series are already more or less Darkstalkers without the movie monsters.
