I was joking all day about Nintendo announcing a new Smash at this Direct and when it actually happened I almost started hyperventilating

If it's a port, I hope that they add a more robust single-player mode.

Yes, Subspace Emissary/Story mode please, I want nothing more than to see ridiculous shenanigans starring Mario and Mega Man and Cloud and Bayonetta and the goddamn Duck Hunt Dog.

Somehow I didn't see this coming. I'm excited. Looks like an enhanced version of Smash 4.

I hope it is, because Smash 4 had a bunch of DLC characters that I never got to play. A theoretical Smash 5 would probably not have a bunch of them.

Is Nojima even free to work on a possible story mode for this game? I figured he'd have his hands full with the FFVII remake.

I'm going with this being Smash 5 all the way, not an enhanced port.

I spent some time observing the smash subreddit hotly discuss this subject, and I came away feeling those who argue "enhanced port of Smash 4" are doing so out of skepticism (healthy or not, you decide), while those arguing for "Smash 5" do have lots of precedent and circumstantial evidence to back them up (which you can go read yourself if you are so bothered). I don't recall any circumstantial evidence in favor of the "enhanced port of Smash 4" argument.

The evidence that I have to offer about this an expansion on of Smash 4, rather than a new game made from scratch using some reused assets, is that Masahiro Sakurai is still alive and apparently in good health.

Call it Smash 4 Turbo if you want. Smash 4: The New Challengers. I don't think that they will have come up with an entirely new skeleton for it so soon after the end of maintenance on the Wii U and 3DS versions, especially not considering that most of the rest of the direct was about ports and remakes.

I’m with dosboot. 4 came out 4 years ago and was developed in about 2 and a half years. If they started this after the final DLC characters were released I could buy them making a new game real quick. Plus that logo is different and why not call it “for Switch” to indicate a port.

I'm on team "This is a port under another name." Even though it has been over about three years, the kind of production values put into Super Smash Bros. Brawl and 4 couldn't have been cheap or easy to make.

I mean, Smash 4 already has a pretty solid skeleton, there's no need to reinvent the wheel. Just add some new characters, stages, music, and trophies, maybe add a new mode or two and adapt some of the content from the 3DS game for the HD title.

Whatever you call it, MetManMas, that's still team "Smash 5"! When they went from Splatoon 1 to Splatoon 2 they didn't throw out every asset and every line of code from the first engine, but it is still a sequel and not a port.

If one wants to predict this is merely an enhanced port of Smash 4, then one is predicting that "the true successor Smash 5" will be arriving in some time 2019 or beyond.

By this rationale, there is also no reason to assume Smash 5, where Smash 5 is an entirely new entry. Literally the only thing we can take away is that there will be some flavor of Smash game on the Switch at some point. What we do have in circumstantial evidence, however, is the absolute abundance of ports from the Wii U.

TL;DR: There's historical precedence to lean toward Smash 4 upgrade/port, in relation to trend of Wii U re-releases. There's no reason to assume Smash 5. And there's no certainty on either until Nintendo releases more information.

I guess we'll see. I'm reminded that in a 2016 thread I was the only one on the forums who wanted to bet on "Smash 5" over "Smash 4 port now, Smash 5 later". At least figcube's is with me now! ^_^

I personally feel like Link being the BotW Link makes it seem more likely that it's Smash 5.

It would be odd for Nintendo to release any kind of Smash thing without BOTW Link; it seems like it'd be relatively easy to "hot swap" that one character, or add eyes to Mario's cap, or any number of things. It is true that each Nintendo system since the N64 has seen one new Smash game. But outside of the distance between the O.G. Smash Bros. and Melee, these games have seen 6 or 7 years between releases.

Could they have been working on this all along? Maybe. We'll see.

How many hot swaps before it's acceptable to say it's a new game, though.

Five? Let's go with five.

Or if an English localization of Mother 3 is hidden somewhere in the game.

Melee, Brawl, and for WiiU/3DS each more or less started from scratch. Whether it’s a port or a new entry, I hope it builds off of the last game and doesn’t drop many fighters.
